It is also the season of when claims far and wide of who does the boils the best crawfish are staked. Crawfish Mambo, a festival that pitted 30 teams (up from last year’s 19) against one another, answered that question. Held at the Cove on the University of New Orleans campus, the all-you-can-eat event on Saturday (May 10) attracted mudbug gourmands (despite the day’s intermittent rainy weather) to sample and choose their favorite crawfish — and assorted ancillary items, such as traditional favorites corn, potatoes and mushrooms, as well as a few more avant-garde: sweet potatoes, pineapple, and string beans, to name a few. Almeida. The judges chose: first place: Waldemar S. Nelson and Company “Crawfish de Mayo”; second place: Rome’s Tuxedo “Chip N Tails,” and third place, Team AIO. The crowd favorite was “Chip N Tails”; and the Best Decorated Booth (chosen by Alumni Association Judge’s Panel) was “Crawfish de Mayo.” The event also featured top-notch entertainment all day: The Original Pinettes, Robin Barnes, Bucktown All-Stars, Glen David Andrews and Rebirth Brass Band. And, the crawfish were being boiled up until the festival's end at 7 pm.
