Letter from the Executive Director
Bonjour Crème Family,
Can you believe summer is just around the corner? With summer, and warmer weather comes the benefit of
spending more time outdoors. Fresh air, sunshine and exercise are essential to the healthy development
of young children. Studies show that children who spend more time playing outdoors are
generally more fit and have a lower risk of being overweight. However, it is important that while
promoting fitness and outdoor activities, we also protect and help prevent another risk – sun
damage that could possible lead to skin cancer.
Sunshine is the primary source for vitamin D which helps our bodies absorb calcium for
stronger, healthier bones. Unfortunately, the sun also emits ultraviolet (UV) rays which can
cause skin damage, eye damage and even cancer. This is why sun safety is very important.
Here are a few tips on how to avoid/decrease exposure to UV:
• Avoid direct sunlight through windows in children’s sleeping/play areas
• Install UV protective window film or other window coverings in homes and vehicles
Lindsay Becnel
• Avoid prolonged time in the sun during peak hours(10:00AM-4:00PM)
• Stay in the shade
• Wear hats and UV protective eyewear
• Check UV, air quality and heat indexes
• Apply sunscreen (30 SPF or greater)
Keep in mind that extra caution should be taken with infants under 6 months of age. The American Academy
of Pediatrics suggests testing a small amount on a small area of the back. If there is no reaction within 24 hours,
then it should be safe to use on small exposed areas of the body.

• Drink plenty of water
• Practice sun safety every day all year long
Promoting sun safety in young children can lead to great lifelong habits. These habits will
reduce chances of sunburn, skin damage, reduce eye discomfort and risk of eye damage. It
will also decrease the occurrence of skin cancer and most importantly, build self-esteem and
confidence as children learn to be happy with their natural skin tone. The main message for
children and all of us - “Your skin protects you. You should protect your skin.”
I can’t thank you enough for your support. Please let me know how we can support you and
your family further. As always, please feel free to contact me regarding your questions at,
