Webinar Series brought to you by: Weight Loss and Weight Management: Current Theories & Best Practices This four session, interactive webinar series brings together national leaders in nutrition, exercise and bariatric medicine who will address what is needed to have a successful weight loss and management program for children and adults in family and community practice settings. The series will start with a presentation and discussion on dynamic energy balance, an important new perspective on what metabolic changes occur during weight loss and how these changes have to be taken into account as part of a weight loss program. The second session will focus specifically on exercise and energy expenditure and weight loss. The final two sessions will present pediatric and adult case studies to highlight the promoters and challenges that lead to successful patient care, in regards to weight loss and maintaining weight loss. Define and explain static vs. dynamic energy balance. 2. Explain to a client why people lose weight differently on the same diet and exercise program 3. Identify diet and exercise practices that may help management of weight using the dynamic energy balance principles. Dr. Melinda M. Manore Oregon State University Dr. Melinda M. Manore is a Professor of Nutrition at Oregon State University (OSU) where her research focuses on the interaction of nutrition and exercise for energy balance, health and performance. She has authored over 100 scientific publications, book chapters, and review articles, and 4 nutrition textbooks. She is an active member of American Society of Nutrition (ASN), the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), AND Sport and Cardiovascular Nutritionists (SCAN) and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). She recently served as Chair of the USDA, ACSM, and AND Energy Balance Workgroup and Expert Panel Meeting, Energy Balance at the Crossroads: Translating Science into Action (2012). Currently, she is funded on two USDA Childhood Obesity Prevention Grants totaling $10M, one of which is using sport nutrition to engage high school soccer players to improve health and performance and better understand energy balance. Dr. Manore received her BA from Seattle Pacific University, MS from the U Oregon and PhD in Nutritional Sciences with dual minors in health and exercise science from OSU. She is a registered dietitian (RD).
