The five key features of the
BMW 1 Series Convertible.
1
The car’s stylish, eye-catching design will particularly
appeal to younger customers, and transforms open-top driving: the low shoulder line, flat rear section,
short, comparatively upright A-pillar, and deck effect all combine to offer an inspiring open-air
experience.
2
Unrivalled performance and fuel economy thanks to
the proven excellence of BMW engines. The BMW 1 Series Convertible outperforms the competiton in
terms of fuel economy, carbon dioxide emissions and acceleration.
3
The premium soft top is perfectly suited to the vehicle’s youthful, sporty
styling and offers benefits such as Comfort Access, acoustic insulation, and suitability for
winter driving. A conscious decision was taken to use a fabric roof, and a unique brilliant metallic
version is available as an option.
4
A range of equipment unique in a convertible
of this class, including leather seats with Sun Reflective Technology, automatic climate
control with convertible mode, a flexible luggage compartment with best-in-class through-loading
capacity, and entertainment options such as the USB/audio connection.
5
Outstanding safety features, including a body that is stiffer than any
other vehicle in its class, automatic roll bars, a reinforced A-pillar and head/thorax airbags.

Ordinary compact convertibles
look like this:

With a bulky rear, high shoulder line and long, curved A-pillar, conventional compact convertibles
aren’t able to offer their passengers a true open-air driving experience. What’s more, the combination of
short bonnets with relatively long overhangs gives them an unbalanced profile, one that looks neither
sporty nor elegant.

While the BMW 1 Series Convertible looks
like this: youthful, inspiring, sporty and beautifully
proportioned.
The BMW 1 Series Convertible embodies a certain approach to life. Whether cruising through night-time
city streets, or sweeping along empty country roads, its elongated and flattened profile, innovative highquality features, and uniquely sporty rear-wheel drive layout mean it offers the most inspiring open-top
driving experience in its class.

The rear of the BMW 1 Series Convertible is flat and neat,
and the low shoulder line enhances the convertible experience.
1905_E88_Arg_ROW B5
Most competitor vehicles in the compact class feature a
high, bulky rear, with the shoulder line rising up to meet it. This
not only looks out of proportion, but also hampers enjoyment of
the convertible experience.
26.10.2007 13:44:41 Uhr
The prominently flared wheel
arches draw attention to the new alloy
wheels, and add extra dynamism
to the car’s muscular wing sections.

The short A-pillar has a taut line, and is
reinforced for extra strength.
The A-pillar of the BMW 1 Series Convertible is short and
stands comparatively upright, offering the driver additional space
and freedom. This increases the sensation of open-air driving,
with front-seat occupants having a clear view of the sky above.
1905_E88_Arg_ROW C5
Competitor vehicles feature elongated, curved A-pillars.
As a result, the driver is under the windscreen, rather than truly
in the open air.

The long wheelbase elongates
the vehicle’s side profile,
and emphasizes its near-perfect
50:50 weight distribution.

The bonnet of the BMW 1 Series Convertible has been
lengthened. In combination with the short overhang,
this gives the front end of the car a dynamic, sporty look.

The bonnets of competitor models do not extend nearly
as far back from the front axle, resulting in front sections that
lack both dynamism and elegance.

Taking the roof down completely transforms the look of a convertible’s rear section. BMW engineers
paid particular attention to this when designing the 1 Series Convertible, and have ensured that the rear
section looks good from any angle, whether the top is up or down. The two roof positions can be illustrated
with simple hand movements.
Top down: low-slung and elegant.
When the roof is open, the BMW 1 Series
Convertible is low-slung and elegant,

contour edges further emphasizing
the car’s wide track (Fig. 2).

Feel like you’re outside when you’re inside it:
open-air driving in the BMW 1 Series Convertible.
As the boundaries between interior and exterior are particularly fluid on a convertible, it is essential that
the two aspects of the car are designed in harmony. The BMW 1 Series Convertible maximizes the
open-air driving experience. The close relationship between interior and exterior is symbolized by the
shoulder line, which encircles the passenger compartment and is visible inside and out, running
seamlessly from the tops of the doors across the back of the car. This design feature contributes to
the feeling of freedom, as do the car’s high-quality materials (e.g. the chrome strip that also runs
around it) and a host of equipment options.
The deck effect.
A top-down view of the BMW 1 Series Convertible makes
one of the inspirations for the vehicle’s design very
obvious. The shoulder line runs all the way around the car,
connecting the bonnet to the boot cover, and creating
a near-flat surface that surrounds the entire passenger
compartment – just like the deck of a motor yacht.

this class offers. With Comfort Access (optional), the roof
can also be opened remotely at a range of up to eight metres.

Acoustic insulation was a key consideration when designing
the soft top. The integrated rear window has been reinforced
so that it can better block out noise. With a weight of 1,260 g/m2,
the material used in the roof is also considerably stronger than
that found in most convertibles, and so as well as improved noise
insulation, it also offers a comparable level of winter comfort
to a permanent roof.

Intelligent design: automatic climate control
with convertible mode.
The automatic climate control (optional) system in the BMW 1 Series Convertible is able to react
intelligently to changing situations. If the roof is open, it switches to convertible mode, meaning that the
interior air conditioning is regulated according to the ambient temperature, sun intensity and driving
speed. Conditioned air is channelled primarily through the ventilation grills, so as to ensure passengers
are not unduly affected by cold or hot exterior temperatures. The system means drivers need no longer
adjust fan speeds, temperature settings and air vents manually, and offers a more comprehensive
functionality than any of its competitors.

For example, if you are driving on a
motorway with the top down at a speed of
120 km/h and the exterior temperature
is 5°C, air flow into the cabin is primarily
through the ventilation grills, at a higher
temperature and with a greater fan speed –
the footwell vents are only around 20 per
cent open. However, if the top was up and
convertible mode not engaged, the
vehicle would primarily be heated via the
footwell.

What does this valve plate have to
do with the driving dynamics of the
BMW 1 Series Convertible?
More than you might think.
BMW engineers are able to pick up on the sort of tiny details that even computers can miss. Such as the
impact of the narrow slits found in these valve plates, through which oil flows into the bottom valve of
the damper – the size of these openings can have a significant impact on the way the car feels to drive.
During suspension tuning, the size of these openings is adjusted in increments of just 0.05 square
millimetres. The difference in size is so small that computers are unable to detect it – but for BMW
chassis engineers, it makes all the difference.
Specifications of damper
valve plates in the
BMW 1 Series Convertible:
– 2.7 mm wide
– 0.1 mm thick
– 5 slits
– Max opening 1.35 mm²

BMW 1 Series Convertible Driving dynamics
17
A convertible places unique demands on the chassis. The bodywork of a convertible needs to be
significantly stiffer than that of a car with a fixed roof, and the two different types of car feel very different
to drive. Also, the vehicle’s centre of gravity changes depending on whether the top is up or down. As a
result, the engineers behind the BMW 1 Series Convertible have developed four different chassis set-ups
for the vehicle: a standard and a sport mode for the 6-cylinder models, and the same two alternatives
for the 4-cylinders. It’s a task they invested a huge amount of effort in, fine-tuning every last detail of the
car to deliver maximum performance. In the case of the damper valve plate slits, this meant adjustments
in increments of just 0.05 square millimetres – because tiny modifications can sometimes have the
biggest impact.
The four key areas of chassis set-up.
Suspension/damping.
Fine-tuning the suspension requires years of experience and
an instinctive feel. A good chassis must be able to absorb any
bumps in the road, ensuring passengers remain comfortable,
while at the same time providing precise responses even when
driven hard.
Steering.
BMW steering systems are considered the most precise on
the market, and provide drivers with optimum feedback in any
driving situation. When the wheel is close to centred, the
steering should be as smooth as possible, but when it is turned
harder into a corner, it should provide more involving feedback.
Engineers refer to this as a steering torque increase outside the
centre region.
Tyres.
The tyres are the point of contact between the vehicle and
the road, and play a key role in the car’s performance.
They must maintain traction and transfer power, yet not offer
excessive rolling resistance. Runflat tyres with different
rubber compounds and construction are specially designed
for every BMW model range.
Axle kinematics.
Axle kinematics refers to the wheels’ response when subjected
to longitudinal, vertical and lateral forces, i.e. when the car
accelerates, brakes and steers. It is essential that the vehicle
remains stable at all times, especially in situations such as when
braking and cornering simultaneously.

Increased efficiency is the key to cutting
consumption.
Efficiency means getting the maximum amount of driving pleasure from the minimum amount of fuel.
And this is a challenge that the unique range of BMW engines is more than equal to, with a variety of
innovative technologies designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions while actually increasing
output. This is the reason why BMW vehicles like the BMW 1 Series Convertible consistently achieve
best-in-class performance.

This really is a new dimension in precision.
BMW petrol engines with High Precision Injection.
Injection at the point of ignition.
High Precision Injection does just what the name suggests.
The piezo injectors ensure that fuel is delivered to precisely
where it is needed – straight to the spark plugs. The injection
pressure is an enormous 200 bar, and the quantity of fuel
injected is precisely controlled, at just two milligrams per
BMW 135i Convertible (225 kW/306 hp).
400 Nm is a lot of torque. Particularly when it’s available over
such a wide rev range as it is in the BMW 135i Convertible, from
1,300 to 5,000 rpm. But the engine will push on beyond that
all the way to 7,000 rpm, with its maximum output at 5,800 rpm.
“The engine is perfectly balanced, and the way it puts its
225 kW/306 hp down onto the tarmac is almost unbelievable”
(FTD, 29.01.2007, BMW 335i test). The combination of Twin
Turbo technology with second-generation direct fuel injection
also delivers another decisive competitive advantage: the
engine offers the sort of performance you‘d normally expect
from a V8, but with the fuel consumption of a state-of-the-art
6-cylinder unit.

engine’s combustion chamber. Third-generation common-rail
technology operates at pressures of up to 2,000 bar (BMW 120d:
1,800 bar), and is more precise in the amount of fuel injected
than its predecessors. The result is a significant reduction in fuel
consumption and emissions, and a clear improvement in engine

The new BMW diesel engines with third-generation
common-rail technology. Improving economy through
high-pressure fuel injection.
BMW is the first manufacturer to offer third-generation
common-rail direct fuel injection. The common-rail system
separates pressure generation and fuel injection, with
electronically controlled injectors delivering the fuel to the
BMW 120d Convertible (130 kW/177 hp).
The new 4-cylinder diesel engine is extremely compact and
made entirely of aluminium. It is the first engine on the market to
incorporate third-generation common-rail direct fuel injection.
This means that the quantity of fuel injected is more precisely
controlled, noticeably enhancing performance while reducing
fuel consumption (5.7 l/100 km). As you would expect, it’s
a combination that none of the car’s competitors can equal.
(BMW 120d Convertible available from March 2008.)
Combustion chamber with
common-rail direct fuel injection
The lower the weight, the bigger the advantages.
Lightweight construction is about selecting the most effective
material for every vehicle component. And this is why the
engine block of the new 4-cylinder diesel models is made
entirely of aluminium, reducing weight by 20 kilograms
compared with its predecessor. This markedly reduces the
weight over the front axle, resulting in improved axle load
distribution and lower fuel consumption.
Second-generation diesel particulate filters as standard.
BMW uses second-generation diesel particulate filters, which
unlike first-generation systems are maintenance-free, require no
additives and last the lifetime of the vehicle. Filter regeneration is
carried out as necessary by the engine management system. The
filter’s proximity to the engine means that it quickly reaches the
temperature required to burn
off particulate matter, and as
such, the cleaning process
has negligible impact on fuel
economy.

– recall due to leak in two-part
folding steel roof
– roof can only be opened when
stationary (29 seconds)
Exterior
– profile appears out of
proportion and lacks

“flat windscreen and fat
backside” (AB, issue
21/2006)
– two-part folding steel roof,
only opens when vehicle
is stationary (22 seconds)

been well received by the
press
– comfortable seats
– large luggage space:
248 litres (open),
534 litres (closed)
– no through-loading hatch
Interior
– adequate space
– lacks a genuine convertible
feel: “shorter drivers will
be under the windscreen,
while taller ones will have the
frame right in front of their
eyes” (AB, issue 21/2006)
– no through-loading hatch
Interior
– little space in the rear and
boot
– press have criticized high
wind noise when roof is
closed

– largest engine is a 3.2-litre V6
that produces 184 kW
(250 hp)
– performance and
fuel economy inferior to

dual-clutch Direct Shift
Gearbox (DSG)
– suspension and steering are
good, though the driving
experience overall is not at
BMW levels

(AB, issue 07/2007)
Driving dynamics
– front-wheel drive only
– significant understeer
when close to the limit
– comfort-oriented suspension
set-up
Engines
– unresponsive, uneconomical
petrol engines
– diesel unit is torquier and
smoother than the petrol
versions
– gear changes lack precision

BMW 1 Series Convertible The competition
23
... don’t even come close to the
BMW 1 Series Convertible.
The BMW 1 Series Convertible makes no compromises in either the design or the driving experience, and
boasts a flattened, stretched, dynamic profile. Its short, upright A-pillar means the driver is unrestricted
and free to enjoy the most inspiring open-air driving experience in its class, with a range of economical yet
responsive engines further enhancing the sheer top-down driving pleasure.
BMW 1 Series Convertible.
Exterior
– elongated profile
– flat shoulder line, low rear
section
– comparatively upright A-pillar
– premium soft top, can be
opened at up to 40 km/h
Interior
– high build quality throughout
– well laid-out premium cockpit
– range of customization
options
– largest through-loading hatch
in its class
– comprehensive storage
package
– generously sized luggage
compartment
– automatic climate control with
convertible mode
Engines
– wide selection available
– two 6-cylinder engines
– lean-burn combustion
(petrol engines), thirdgeneration common-rail
technology (diesel)
– BMW EfficientDynamics
Driving dynamics
– the only convertible to offer
rear-wheel drive
– exceptionally precise steering
– two chassis set-ups for each
engine
– 50:50 weight distribution
What about Audi? The Audi A3 Convertible is scheduled for launch at the end of 2007. Like the
BMW 1 Series Convertible, it features a soft top, with the first unofficial pictures suggesting its shape
is largely borrowed from the hatchback version of the Audi A3. As such, it has a very short, almost
stepless rear section.
Audi A3 Convertible.
Exterior
– shape derived from
A3 hatchback
– likely to have a higher
shoulder line and short
rear
– soft top
1905_E88_Arg_ROW 23
Interior
– high-quality, minimalist
Audi design
– luggage space of around
300 litres
– through-loading system
planned
Engines
– no 6-cylinder engines
expected for launch
– turbocharged 4-cylinder
petrol engines
– common-rail technology
expected on diesel models
for the first time
Driving dynamics
– front-wheel drive, largest
engine likely only to be
available with the heavier
quattro 4WD system
– it is likely that the chassis will
share the typical Audi
propensity to understeer

Safety.
Adaptive Headlights (optional) with
turning light.
The turning light complements the Adaptive
Headlights (optional) and features two
separate light sources within the inner
headlight units. Up to a certain speed, it is
activated automatically when the indicator
lever is used or the steering wheel turns,
and lights up the area to the side of the car,
considerably increasing safety when turning
or manoeuvring.
Automatic roll bar.
Roll protection in the rear is incorporated
in the area behind the rear headrests.
The on-board safety system recognizes the
warning signs of an impact, and deploys
two roll bars in just a fraction of a second.
Bi-xenon headlights (optional) with
daytime running lights.
The daytime running lights are in the corona
rings of the bi-xenon headlights, and are
brighter than the parking lights. Corona rings
are a classic BMW design feature and the
light they provide in the daytime lends the
BMW 1 Series Convertible an unmistakable
presence, as well as also contributing to
increased safety.
Head/thorax airbags.
The specially developed head/thorax airbags
protect the sides of the chest as well as the
head area. They are incorporated into the
side wall of the seats, so that they are equally
effective whatever the seat position.
Rear lights with LED technology and
Brake Force Display.
LED technology is incorporated into the
rear lights as standard. Brake Force
Display increases the size of the illuminated
area when the car brakes sharply, so
that drivers behind are warned as to how
hard they need to brake.
1905_E88_Arg_ROW 24
Reinforced A-pillar.
The windscreen frame has been reinforced
around the A-pillar and cowl, so that it acts
as a roll bar, offering passengers the same
level of protection as in a saloon in the event
of an accident.
Runflat tyres.
Runfl at tyres retain their shape even after
a complete loss of tyre pressure, and
stay firmly attached to the rim. This is
particularly valuable at high speeds, when
a flat tyre can be extremely dangerous.
The car can be driven for up to 250 km at
80 km/h after an incident (when lightly
laden) and for even longer in the case of
a slow puncture. As a result, there is no
need to carry a spare wheel.
Structural rigidity.
The stiffness of the body has been
designed to meet the most stringent
internationally recognized consumer
tests. Extra strengthening of the frame in
the door area offers protection in side
impacts, and the car is expected to score
top marks in crash tests. The high level
of torsional rigidity also contributes to the
highly precise steering responses.

BMW 1 Series Convertible Safety and comfort
25
Comfort.
BMW Online and BMW Assist
(both optional).
BMW Online allows you to access webbased services from your car, so you can call
up information such as the latest news or
share prices, or send and receive emails. The
Google dealership search function allows
you to find the details of BMW dealerships in
the area from the Internet using the Google
search engine, and save their phone
numbers to your mobile and addresses to
the navigation system at the touch of a
button. BMW Assist is a telematic service
that provides updates on the latest traffic
situation, gives information about hotels,
restaurants and places of interest, and, in an
emergency, can even identify your location
and summon help automatically. Telematic
services are only available where the
optional Business or Professional navigation
system with built-in Bluetooth mobile phone
preparation is fitted.
Comfort Access (optional).
Comfort Access provides keyless opening
and closing of the car’s doors. The system
is so advanced that the driver doesn’t even
have to press a remote control button –
simply carrying the keys is enough. The
roof can also be opened and closed
remotely, while the engine is switched on
keylessly, via the Start/Stop button.
Park Distance Control (optional).
Park Distance Control uses a warning sound
to tell the driver how far the car is from a
parked vehicle or other obstacle, making
parking and manoeuvring significantly
easier. If an optional navigation system is
fitted, the distance is also displayed on
screen.
Exclusive paint colours.
As well as the eleven standard colours, there
are also two paint finishes available that are
exclusive to the BMW 1 Series Convertible
and BMW 1 Series Coupé: Cashmere Silver
Metallic and Sedona Red Metallic.
USB interface (optional) and multimedia
pocket (selected countries only).
Located underneath the armrest, the USB/
audio interface allows BMW-approved MP3
players and USB sticks to be connected to
the car’s stereo system. Where the optional
front armrest is fitted, an additional pocket
on the underside is provided to hold the
MP3 player.
Fuel guard for diesel vehicles.
The fuel guard is a mechanism that
prevents petrol pump nozzles being placed
in the tank of diesel-engined models.
Business and Professional navigation
systems (both optional).
The navigation systems put comprehensive
information about the road network at your
fingertips. Both systems use maps and
directional arrows on the iDrive display to
guide you to your destination, and can
be fitted with a voice input function as an
option. The Professional system also
features separate CD and DVD drives.
1905_E88_Arg_ROW 25
Functional bookmarks (only
in conjunction with the optional
navigation system). The eight
programmable functional bookmarks
allow you to call up the functions you
use most often at the touch of a button.
Integrating the music player into the vehicle’s
on-board electronics also considerably
increases safety, as users can browse
through playlists and operate all the device’s
functions via the car radio, iDrive (optional)
and the multifunction steering wheel
(optional).
