Overview
The Sydney Real eNgagement session was held on 30 April. A group of thirteen RNs came together to continue to
build positive momentum for possibilities in nursing. Three of them had attended last year’s session.
Detailed Synopsis
What we want to shape inside RNs profession? What is our interest in being here?
•
Stay focused on why we became nurses
•
Change and become more engaged
•
Listen to each other more, really hear each other not just work in silos or as individuals
•
Bring caring back, it’s hard to with all the expectations on us
•
Infinite resources and patience to help us care
•
Slinky model – help us be up to all the challenges we are facing
•
Inch worm, bring back compassion bit by bit
•
Heart broken, so many sad stories, time to heal the heart of nurses and the profession
•
Profession is broken, like to bring it back
•
Nursing profession takes on more than it should
•
Every moment was a privilege in the past, that feeling is gone. They have so much to do so little time.
Would like to help us be the best we can be.
•
Work together more for positive outcomes
•
Better communication and less animosity
Realizations after story-telling activity
What was your experience of this exercise?
•
Affirming
•
Hard to accept positive about self
•
Easy to see positive in others
How is this experience relevant (for RNs) at this time?
•
To be positive takes positive and run with it is needed
•
We need to do this for each other more

The Big Shift: what strengths do we need to develop to make this shift?
•
Need not to get sucked into the naysayers, need to stay positive
•
Need to turn patience and coping into courage
•
Rather than waiting for senior management or systems change, need to take the initiative and be creative,
have the tirelenessness to continue
The value of this session for me was:
•
It reaffirmed the core and the need to do that regularly, to find the positives as difficult as that can be
•
Judy’s information presentation and comments
•
Enjoyed meeting other nurses
•
Enjoyed this session more than previous. The smaller group with more time to look at inner self and focus
on positive. Liked going into different groups. Speaker excellent to listen to and very engaging
•
Reinforced my inner core
•
Celebrated I am a positive ion and have emerged already – I must remember that!
•
Reminder of how far positivity can go and how we can and are seen by other people.
•
Empowering session lots of insight
•
We are not alone, nurses do want to bring positive changes to our profession and that support is there for
us, that everyone needs to make small changes. Don’t let the negatives keep you back. Be part of the 12%!
•
I am feeling a little empowered tonight, feel good about being a nurse!
•
Introspection and how to engage others
•
The power of courage. All it takes is one person (maybe 2 if you’re dancing) to bring about a positive
change in others.
•
Loved the sessions. Feel refreshed coming from Real Engagement workshops. Brings for the to me why I
went into nursing and one person at a time, we can make a change.
•
OMG, I needed this session so badly. I need to stop being a victim and envision my positive picture image
and believe in it.
Suggestions/Next Steps/Improvements
•
Ongoing sessions it was excellent
•
Interviews should happen again before entrance to the nursing program
•
Get senior managers and directors on board with this initiative
•
More frequent sessions maybe better lunch with session
•
Need to feed the inner core of our senior leadership teams, who are the visionaries and have mot power to
influence change.
•
One nibble at a time and we will be 10,000 strong!
