Pools are opening, the pollen count is lowering, and the daylight is lasting past
eight….It must almost be SUMMER!!!!!!
We want to give a great big THANK YOU to Sylvia Vance for all
her years as being the head of the Croatan Neighborhood
Email system. Sylvia has performed this task for over ten years
and we cannot thank her enough for all her service to the
neighborhood.
With that another big THANK YOU to Mr. Tim Moody for
volunteering to takeover for Sylvia and trying to bring many
new updates to the System that will make it easier to be used.
Thanks Tim.
Spring Fling is right around the corner (June 6th) so please send in your $$$ so
we can get an accurate count for supplies. You can find a flyer in this newsletter
and drop off to Martha Davenport at 601 Croatan Court.
We also need volunteers to help out this year at Spring Fling as it takes many
individuals to pull off this great event every year. We only ask our volunteers for
about an hour of their time during the event so that everyone can enjoy the
day. Please call Debbie or Larry Kurtz @ 428-9240 if you are interested.
Also don’t forget to bring some $$$ to the Spring for our Raffles and for Croatan
LogoWear.
And in closing let’s hope that Mother
Nature is kind to our beach this year and
please let our city officials and political
reps to help FIX OUR BEACH!!!!!!!
‘Til we share cold one on the beach, take
care and be safe.

Wildlife in Croatan by Suditi (Susanna H. Miller)
As the wondrous offerings of spring fill the neighborhood, one of the more unobtrusive birds to the sight is filling the air with song. In spring and summer,
the Song Sparrow, Melospiza melodia, is one of the most conspicuous of all
sparrows.
As the name implies, the Song Sparrow is a famous singer. Males sing often while perching
around eye level on exposed branches. The
song consists of 3 short notes followed by a
varied trill, sometimes interpreted as “MadgeMadge-Madge, put-on-your-tea-kettle-ettle-ettle”. Calls include soft ‘tinks’ and
‘chimps’, while fledglings make a ‘zeeeee’ sound.
The eastern form of the Song Sparrow has a breast with coarse brown streaks which
often has a dark spot in the center. They have a thick, dark malar (moustache) stripe.
The tail is somewhat long for a sparrow.
Song Sparrows flit through dense, low vegetation or low branches, occasionally moving onto open ground after food.
Flights are short and fluttering, with a characteristic downward pumping of the tail. They are found in nearly any
open habitat, including marsh edges, overgrown fields, backyards and forest edges.
Song Sparrows forage mostly on the ground, sometimes
scratching in the soil to turn up items. Surprisingly, they also
sometimes forage in very shallow water (fractions of an inch
deep) and up in shrubs and trees. They commonly visit bird
feeders placed close to good cover. Foraged food includes
insects, especially in summer (including beetles, grasshoppers, caterpillars, ants, wasps, and spiders) and seeds, especially in winter (mainly those of grasses and weeds). Birds in
coastal marshes and on islands also feed on small crustaceans and mollusks.
Males defend small nesting territories, so high numbers of Song Sparrows may exist in good habitat. Nest sites vary:
on the ground under a clump of grass or shrub, less than 4 ft above the ground and
sometimes up to 10' or higher. Raised sites may be
in shrubs, low trees, or marsh vegetation, often
above water. The nest (built mostly or entirely by
the female) is an open cup of weeds, grass, leaves
and strips of bark, lined with fine grass, rootlets
and animal hair. Typically, there are 3-5 pale,
greenish white eggs, heavily spotted with reddish
brown. Incubation is apparently by the female
only, about 12-14 days. Both parents feed the nestlings which fledge in about 10-12
days after hatching, but remain with their parents about another 3 weeks.
As you enjoy the bountiful gifts of Nature this spring and summer, take a careful look and listen for this sweet little
sparrow with the great big voice…another gem in the crown of Croatan.
