Rarely have reason and emotion been so closely intertwined
There are times when it can be hard to keep your emotions in check – the moment you first set eyes on
the CLS, for instance. It’s not just the captivating looks that make this four-door coupé so hard to resist
however: there are many rational reasons for choosing a CLS too, some of which you’ll find outlined
on the following pages. See for yourself – and discover just how prudent following your heart can be.
5
No amount of words can do it justice
6
Boosts testosterone levels, cuts emissions
The looks are breathtaking, the drive exhilarating. Improved engines extract even greater enjoyment
from each drop of fuel, making for a more intense driving experience – and significantly lower
CO2 emissions. → pages 20–29
7
The warmth of sunlight – with none of the heat
The CLS presents a genuine innovation in automotive lighting: high-performance LED headlamps
(standard on Sport). Not only do they look highly striking, they also generate less heat than
conventional headlamps, and hence use significantly less energy. What’s more, their light is more
akin to natural daylight, making them easier on the eye in every sense. → pages 34–41

Insights

How Bertha Benz sacrificed her hairdo in the name of progress
As the wife of inventor Karl Benz was inserting her hairpin one fine
morning in the August of 1888, she could hardly have guessed it
would later become part of motoring legend. Without his knowledge,
Bertha Benz had decided to drive her husband’s Patent Motor Car
from Mannheim to Pforzheim to visit her mother, accompanied by
their two sons Eugen (15) and Richard (14).
It was a journey that was to go down in history – as the first time
such a distance had ever been attempted by car, and as testimony to
the courage, dexterity and inventiveness of Frau Benz herself. Not
even a blockage in the car’s petrol pipe – due to the poor quality of
the petrol – could stop her: “My hairpin helped with that”, she later
explained. Having sacrificed her hairstyle to the cause, Bertha Benz
was then able to complete the more than 60-mile journey, thereby
demonstrating the motor car’s dependability – and helping to
persuade the wider world that this might be the future of personal
transport after all.
17
The future has red-green-blue eyes
If the front end of a car is its face, the headlamps are surely its eyes – the windows
to its personality. And while traditional bulb-and-reflector systems have prevented
designers from creating genuinely individual headlamps, the introduction of LED
technology is literally changing the face of car design. LED headlamps not only
provide a brighter light and faster reactions than conventional systems; their
powerful diodes also open up a whole range of new styling possibilities, allowing
for even bolder and more exciting designs (standard on Sport).
In addition, LEDs enhance visibility for the driver. Their light, which is generated by
an array of diodes in the additive colours red, green and blue, has a thermodynamic
temperature of 5,500 kelvin, the same as that of average noon daylight. As a result,
it is easier on our eyes, which have evolved to function best in daylight conditions.

BlueEFFICIENCY – technology for more efficient driving
Our comprehensive BlueEFFICIENCY measures have
already brought significant cuts in fuel consumption to
many current Mercedes-Benz models, helping to lower
both their CO2 emissions and their running costs. What’s
more, we are continuing to develop new environment
ally friendly technologies that will reduce emissions
even further and help to make motoring more sustainable in the long term.
BlueEFFICIENCY – the Mercedes-Benz efficiency drive.
BlueEFFICIENCY models feature a range of measures
that can significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2
emissions. They include aerodynamic optimisation,
low-resistance tyres and intelligent energy management technologies such as the ECO start/stop function,
which comes as standard on an increasing number of
models. In conjunction with innovative BlueDIRECT
petrol engines, BlueEFFICIENCY measures help
the CLS to achieve reductions in fuel consumption of
up to 25%.
BlueTEC – cleaner diesel power. BlueTEC is our cleanest
diesel technology to date. Its combination of advanced
common-rail direct injection, optimised combustion
and modular emissions control systems reduces
particulate levels by up to 95% and removes up to 90%
of nitrogen oxides, leaving little but water, harmless
nitrogen and the satisfaction of knowing you’ve done
your bit for the environment.
HYBRID and BlueTEC HYBRID – the future of internal
combustion. The next stage in our efficiency drive,
hybrid powertrains will bring new levels of fuel
efficiency and emissions reduction to tomorrow’s
Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. The diesel equivalent,
BlueTEC HYBRID, combines the benefits of hybrid
drive with the clean-burn technology of BlueTEC.

Innovative designs, the new direction: E-Cell and
F-Cell. We have developed two drivetrains that produce
zero local emissions, both of which have been in
limited production since 2010. The B-Class F-Cell¹
uses a hydrogen fuel cell to drive its electric motor,
while the A-Class E-Cell¹ is powered solely by twin
lithium‑ion batteries.
Design for Environment. Our environmental philosophy
is not just about in-car technologies. It also involves
taking the entire lifecycle of each vehicle into account,
from its initial planning to its end-of-life recycling.
We apply the same approach to the building and
maintenance of new factories too, saving energy, avoiding harmful emissions and making increasing use of
renewable resources. In addition, Mercedes-Benz is
involved in the development of alternative fuels and
conducts research in the field of bionics.

Suspension
Be it in sporty driving or relaxed cruising, the CLS is always a pleasure, thanks to suspension systems that adjust the ride and handling automatically to suit the surface
and situation.
Direct Control suspension (standard on 4- and
6-cylinder models). The Direct Control suspension with
Selective Damping System combines agile handling
with a supremely smooth ride. It adapts automatically
to the requirements of the road, ensuring optimum
comfort and stability even on poor surfaces, and also
allows you to manually select a sportier set-up.
AirMATIC air suspension (optional on 6-cylinder
models, standard on V8 models). AirMATIC’s Adaptive
Damping System continuously adjusts the damping to
the road surface and driving situation, enabling it to
provide greater ride comfort and safety than a conventional steel spring system. AirMATIC also allows the
driver to switch manually between sporty and comfortorientated settings and automatically lowers the ride
height at high speeds, increasing stability, reducing
drag and thus improving fuel efficiency.
Direct Steering (standard). By varying the ratio
according to the situation and speed, Direct Steering
gives you assistance when you need it and feel when
you want it. In tight turns or parking manoeuvres,
it reduces the amount of steering input required.
At higher speeds, on the other hand, it decreases
the level of power assistance and ensures inputs
are translated less immediately, helping to enhance
straight-line stability in faster driving and significantly
improving agility. In addition, by only using energy
when the situation requires, this electromechanical
power steering system helps to further improve the
car’s fuel efficiency.

Safer driving
Like all our passenger cars, the CLS is built according to an integrated safety concept. It combines comprehensive occupant protection with intelligent systems that can
help to prevent accidents from occurring.
Attention Assist (standard). Particularly beneficial on
long journeys, Attention Assist is an innovative system
for detecting fatigue. Between speeds of approximately
50 and 110 mph, it assesses the driver’s behaviour via
an array of sensors and registers unexpected changes
that may indicate tiredness or concentration lapses,
such as involuntary movements of the steering wheel.
Night View Assist Plus (optional). This infrared camera
system captures the entire area that would be illum
inated on main beam and shows a black-and-white
image in the instrument panel. In situations where
switching to main beam is not appropriate, Night View
Assist Plus gives you a clearer picture of what’s ahead
and enables you to react faster to potential dangers
such as pedestrians or animals in the road.
Lane-Tracking Package (optional). Providing enhanced
safety during lane changes, the optional Lane-Tracking
Package combines Lane-Keeping Assist and Blind Spot
Assist. Lane-Keeping Assist registers lane markings
and, if it notices the car wandering out of lane, alerts
the driver by subtly vibrating the steering wheel. Blind
Spot Assist monitors the driver’s blind spots via twin
radar sensors in the rear bumper (at speeds of approx.
20 mph or above) and warns of potentially dangerous
lane changes.

Driving Assistance Package (optional). This option
package includes Distronic Plus radar-assisted cruise
control, Active Lane-Keeping Assist and Active Blind
Spot Assist. Distronic Plus helps you to maintain the
required distance from the vehicle in front. It applies
the brakes automatically (bringing the car to a
standstill if necessary) and accelerates again once
the situation allows. Thanks to the Pre-Safe Brake,
the system can initiate an emergency stop approx.
0.6 seconds before an imminent collision, thereby
reducing the severity of the impact. Active Blind Spot
Assist warns you of vehicles in one of your blind spots
via a symbol in the corresponding exterior mirror.
Should you proceed to change lanes despite the subsequent acoustic warning, the system can automatically
apply the brakes in order to avoid a collision. Active
Lane-Keeping Assist, meanwhile, constantly monitors
lane markings and, if it notices the car crossing a
solid white line, alerts the driver by gently vibrating
the steering wheel. If there’s no reaction, the system

Anticipating danger
Sometimes critical situations prove unavoidable. Thankfully, the CLS is equipped with anticipatory safety systems that can reduce the severity of an impact and even
help you avoid an accident altogether.
Pre-Safe Brake (optional, only in conjunction with
Distronic Plus). This three-stage warning and braking
system can intervene in the event of a potential
collision. If the driver doesn’t react to the initial
visual and acoustic warning signals, Pre-Safe Brake
activates the brakes as a further warning. If there’s
still no reaction from the driver, the system then applies
maximum braking force in order to reduce the severity
of the impact.
Brake Assist (BAS Plus) (optional, only in conjunction
with Distronic Plus). BAS Plus works in tandem with
the Pre-Safe Brake to help prevent you from colliding
with the vehicle in front. This anticipatory system
evaluates driving situations using data from the car’s
radar sensors and increases braking pressure where
necessary, based on the distance to the other vehicle
and your relative speeds. If the sensors detect the
possibility of a collision and the driver applies the
brakes in time, BAS Plus ensures sufficient braking
pressure is applied for the available braking distance.
Pre-Safe system (standard). If it detects a probable
accident scenario, Pre-Safe can take anticipatory
measures to prepare the occupants for an imminent
impact, such as activating the front seat belt tensioners
and automatically closing the windows and sunroof
(if fitted).
The Pre-Safe anticipatory occupant protection system can detect critical
driving situations and take preventive measures to protect the occupants

Airbags (standard). The CLS airbag system includes
two-stage front airbags that inflate according to the
projected severity of the impact, plus windowbags,
sidebags, a driver’s side kneebag and even a pelvisbag.
Optional rear sidebags are also available.
Seat belts and Neck-Pro front head restraints
(standard). The front seat belts in the CLS feature
motor-driven belt tensioners that react within split
seconds of a possible accident, plus belt force limiters
that can reduce the risk of upper body injuries.
In the event of a sufficiently severe rear-end impact,
the Neck-Pro front head restraints automatically move
forwards and upwards, enabling them to support the
head sooner and reduce strain on the spine.

lend the CLS a truly unmistakable look by night.
LEDs also create a brighter light, use less power and
last longer than conventional headlamps. What’s more,
they are also easier on the eye, their thermodynamic
temperature of 5,500 kelvin being closer to daylight
than that of xenon headlamps. LED daytime running
light strips in the front apron are also fitted as part of
this option.

Intelligent Light System (fitted in conjunction with
optional high-performance LED headlamps). The CLS
is the first car to offer LED headlamp technology in
combination with all five functions of the Intelligent
Light System: country mode, motorway mode, enhanced
fog lamps, cornering light, and the Active Light
System. Also included is Adaptive High Beam Assist.
It maximises the range of the headlamp beams without
dazzling oncoming traffic.
Bi-xenon headlamps (standard on CLS). Compared
with conventional headlamps, the standard bi-xenon
headlamps produce a brighter light and illuminate
a broader section of the road when on dipped, while
offering a considerably greater range on high beam.
In addition, their sensor-controlled dynamic range
adjustment function compensates automatically
for braking or acceleration, adjusting the angle of the
beams accordingly.
LED tail lights (standard). The tail light clusters feature
LED technology and a wraparound design, giving
the rear end a distinctive look, day or night. The brake
light graphics correspond to those of the tail lights,

Multimedia systems
The CLS offers a choice of two high-quality entertainment and navigation systems: Navigation 50 and the COMAND Online multimedia system. Both can be operated via
the controller in the centre console or the multi-function steering wheel – or by using Linguatronic voice control.
COMAND Online (optional, standard on V6/V8 models).
The COMAND Online multimedia system combines
hard drive navigation with entertainment features such
as a single CD/DVD drive, a tuner, Media Interface, an
equaliser with speed‑sensitive volume control and 6 GB
of storage for audio files. External data devices and
telephones can be connected via the aux‑in connection,
SD memory card slot and Bluetooth interface. The
online feature allows access to the Internet and various
mobile services via an Internet-enabled mobile phone.
COMAND Online is operated either using the intuitive
controller in the centre console or via Linguatronic
voice control, with all menus and maps shown on a
high-resolution 7-inch colour display. In addition, free
map updates are available for the COMAND Online
navigation system from your Mercedes-Benz Retailer
for the first three years after your car’s registration date.
COMAND Online combines audio, navigation and communication in one multimedia system. Its key functions can also be operated via Linguatronic
voice control

Electronic assistants
A good assistant is one that makes your life easier. Speed Limit Assist, for instance, keeps you informed of the legal limit whatever the road, while Active Park Assist and
the reversing camera make for safer and easier manoeuvring.
Speed Limit Assist (optional). A camera in the front
windscreen enables Speed Limit Assist to recognise
speed limits and display them in the instrument
panel. The camera detects round speed limit warnings
both on roadside signs and in overhead gantries and
is particularly useful in areas where the speed limit
varies or when passing through roadworks. In addition,
it compares speed limit signs with the data from the
navigation system – when entering or leaving built-up
areas, for instance – and shows you whether your
current speed is within the legal limit.
Speed Limit Assist also recognises and displays temporary speed restrictions

Reversing camera (optional; only in conjunction with
COMAND Online). The reversing camera makes for
safer and easier parking manoeuvres. Fitted below
the boot lid handle, this wide-angle camera captures
the area immediately behind the car and displays the
image on the COMAND Online multimedia system’s
screen. The camera is activated automatically as soon
as the driver engages reverse.
Parktronic with Active Park Assist (standard). With
Active Park Assist, the CLS can find parking spaces for
you and even manoeuvre itself into them. It identifies
a suitable space, then asks you to confirm whether
you wish to proceed. Once you’ve come to a standstill
and engaged reverse, the system simply steers you in,
manoeuvring so precisely that it requires a gap just
1.30 metres longer than the car.

Seats
With the CLS, exterior and interior are perfectly matched, thanks to a cabin that’s luxurious, distinctive and highly individual.
The CLS interior echoes key design themes from the
car’s exterior. The door centre panels, for instance,
mirror the distinctive arc of the roof line, while the
dashboard sweeps elegantly around from the centre
console to meet the upper door trims, giving the front
seat occupants a cosseted feel. Elegant top-stitching
and high-quality materials such as real leather and
fine wood or distinctive Black Piano Lacquer trim
further enhance the air of luxury.
Memory Package (optional). The Memory Package
increases comfort and convenience for those in the
front and is particularly useful if the car is often used
by more than one driver. It enables the front seats,
head restraints, steering column and exterior mirrors
to be adjusted via separate control panels left and
right and allows up to three different seat positions
to be stored. The package also includes electric 4-way
lumbar adjustment, ensuring front seat occupants
enjoy just the right amount of lower back support.

comfort front head restraints.

impact is detected, the head restraints automatically
move forwards and upwards, helping to reduce the risk
of whiplash injury.
Individual rear seats (standard). The colours, materials
and design of the CLS seats lend a genuinely exclusive
look and feel to its cabin. That goes for the rear too,
where passengers enjoy the luxury of individual seats
separated by a rear centre console with folding armrest. A distinctive four-rib upholstery design front and

CLS 63 AMG interior
You can’t have too much of a good thing, as the CLS 63 AMG proves. It takes all the finest qualities of the regular CLS – and gives you even more of each.
That means even more striking looks, even more generous equipment levels, and sports suspension and braking systems for an even more dynamic drive.
At AMG, it’s not just the engineering that’s beautifully
crafted. The CLS 63 AMG interior, for instance, features
only the finest finishes, combined with an exceptionally sporty look. The ergonomic AMG sports seats are
upholstered in nappa leather, the interior trim comes
in exclusive Black Piano Lacquer and there’s brushed
stainless steel for the AMG door sills and the AMG
sports pedals, which also feature grippy rubber studs.
The high-performance character is further emphasised
by the AMG Drive Unit. This transmission console not
only houses the E-Select shift lever, it also contains

CLS 63 AMG technology
With its AMG 5.5-litre V8 and AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed sports transmission, the CLS 63 AMG delivers exhilarating performance and optimum efficiency – and even
lets you tailor the drive to your mood.
AMG 5.5-litre V8. The CLS 63 AMG offers breathtaking
performance coupled with remarkable efficiency,
thanks to an AMG V8 that delivers up to 557 hp
(410 kW) and 800 Nm of torque (with optional AMG
Performance Package Plus) as well as a typically muscular sound. The comparatively low fuel consumption
is achieved courtesy of a range of innovative technologies, including direct petrol injection with sprayguided combustion, twin turbochargers, intelligent
alternator management and the Controlled Efficiency
driving mode with ECO start/stop function.
AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed sports transmission.
The AMG Speedshift MCT transmission combines
the best of both worlds, blending the sporty, direct
and involving feel of a manual transmission with the
comfort and effortlessness of an automatic. In addition
to Race Start and automatic throttle-blipping, it offers
a choice of three different shift styles. Its Comfort
(‘C’) mode makes for more fuel-efficient driving, while
Sport (‘S’), Sport Plus (‘S+’) and Manual (‘M’) all maxi
mise performance, allowing for shift times of less than
100 ms by shutting off individual cylinders on upshifts.

AMG sports suspension with Ride Control. The AMG

The Ride Control system offers a choice of Comfort,

AMG Performance Studio
With high-performance components and individual styling options, the AMG Performance Studio lets you create an even more exhilarating CLS 63 AMG.
The AMG Performance Package Plus from the
AMG Performance Studio adds extra muscle to
your CLS 63 AMG. It includes a carbon-fibre engine

that increases output to 557 hp (410 kW) and
maximum torque to 800 Nm. The driving experience
can be further enhanced with options such as AMG
Performance suspension featuring even sportier
settings in all three suspension modes and a tractionboosting AMG rear locking differential. The AMG highperformance ceramic composite braking system with
eye-catchingly painted calipers, meanwhile, achieves
a 40% weight-saving and offers precise pedal feel,
shorter stopping distances and a considerably longer
service life. For the looks to match, there are forged
AMG 5-twin-spoke alloy wheels and the AMG Exterior

Take-back of end-of-life vehicles. Coming full circle. At the end of its long life, you can return your CLS-Class to us for environment-friendly
disposal in accordance with the EC End-of-Life Vehicle Directive.¹ But that day lies a long way off.
¹Applies in accordance with national regulations to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes permissible gross weight. The CLS-Class has met the statutory regulations governing the
suitability of the vehicle’s design for reuse and recycling for a number of years now. A network of vehicle take-back depots and dismantlers has been established which will
process your vehicle in an environment-friendly manner. The ways in which both vehicles and parts can be recovered are subject to ongoing development and improvement.
Consequently, the CLS-Class will be able to comply with any future increases in the recycling quota within the stipulated time limits. Further information is available at
