Never practice static stretching with this age group, fun tag/chase games are ideal Physical Literacy remains an important part of these activities – twisting, running, reaching, jumping and kicking Warm-ups without the soccer ball should be no more than 10 minutes Warm ups should be fun, appropriate and active (no shooting and players waiting in lines) Give players 30 minutes of game time in practice and at least 15 minutes of free play where the coach only encourages Create competition in your practice! Winning is not everything but they must foster a competitive mentality to maximize their learning Risk management - refrain from taking players for long runs to warm up or coaching a group larger than 14 Make sure there is success in your session and if there isn’t manipulate the practice accordingly Games are all 2v2 to 6v6 (with Goalkeeper) CAMPBELL RIVER YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION CURRICULUM – U10 COACHING HABITS Come prepared to each session with plans that have the flexibility to progress and regress the practice if needed – be adaptable! Coaching position area should be on the side, not in the practice – we want the players to feel as comfortable as possible Setup at least 15 minutes beforehand (organize your practice so you can transition to each game seamlessly without having to move equipment around) No cell phone use and hot drinks whilst coaching Wear appropriate soccer attire and try not to wear sunglasses as eye contact is important Fluctuate your tone of voice. For instance when you want to be directive, raise your voice whereas if your asking questions be softer and open Discourage sitting during breaks To develop young soccer players repetition is vital so do not worry if you are repeating the same session a few times, as long as it is developmentally appropriate When demonstrating techniques or skills please make sure you are painting a correct picture, if your not comfortable use a player in your group who is Have standards and expectations – if players a walking, losing focus, goofing off, be assertive… but always ask yourself is my session fun and challenging? Limit coaching points to as little as possible, let them make mistakes and play CAMPBELL RIVER YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION CURRICULUM – U10 PLAYER PRACTICE HABITS (expectations within this age group) When players arrive at the field they should be active – dribbling, juggling or playing small possession games (not shooting or inactive) Discourage sitting and incorporate kneeling or standing with their foot on the ball when taking instructions Bring drink bottles to the side of the session Collect their own soccer balls when it is needed Before gameplay the players must fill the goals with balls, then reload on drink breaks and not waiting for a coach to get the game going PLAYERS are responsible for referee calls and making substitutes, when in practice, not coaches Collect equipment when required Players are to understand instructions and staying in the practice area These habits are put in place to build a CRYSA athlete who Communication - eye contact, verbal, high fives is confident in possession and not afraid to express themselves. They show respect to coaches & players and are decision makers on and off the field CAMPBELL RIVER YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION CURRICULUM – U10 How the Curriculum works… All the activities presented reflect the needs of the CRYSA players at this age group. The CRYSA Curriculum can be carried out in a few ways. One is to follow the session sequential (warm up, small sided game, isolated activity, then game) or you can take a component of the session and run that as a station within a group practice, for instance you could divide the field up in to quadrants and run different activities from the curriculum, with a coach at each station FULL SESSION IN SEQUENCE GROUP PRACTICE FORMAT Isolation Activity Warm up then Isolation Activity Conditional Small Sided Game Unconditional Small Sided Game (20 mins approx.) Each plan has a diagram with a description adjacent that explains how to organize, how to progress or alternatively regress the session. Key Factors (KF) or also known as Coaching Points serve as your learning outcomes for the session and the techniques/skills you are identifying in the session. Area or gate sizes are all approximate. In the diagram there are graphics that symbolize components of your practice, it is important these are understood so you can deliver the plan. These symbols are as follows Player/participant which will change colour if there are different teams or different roles Larger cone or traffic cone normally used to make a gate, an imaginary line or an obstacle N Neutral Player, can be identified by a different colour Playing area, grid or zone C Coach Movement of players Movement of soccer ball Goal G Goalkeeper (GK) Pinnie (Bib) CAMPBELL RIVER YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION CURRICULUM – U10 Warm up and dribbling activity-Ghostbusters!! Organisation Approx 20 x 30y grid Players start without balls Activity One player (the ghost) must run away and the Ghostbuster has to chase and stay as close as possible until coach yells ‘freeze!’’ If the tagger can tag the ‘ghost’ from their frozen position they get a point, if not the ghost gets a point Progression 1. Now give a ball to one partner. Repeat whilst dribbling the ball 2. Ball is now placed 3 yards in front of partners anywhere in the grid, on coaches signal they must now compete to keep the ball, whoever has it after 30 secs gets the points Key Factors (KF) Head up looking for spaces. Make this a competition Shooting and finishing SSG Organization 18-25y x25-34y grid (narrow for more scoring opportunities) 4v4 with GK’s + 4 targets who can move along their sideline till half way 2-2-1 formation striker cannot come into his own half Balls by the GK, no throw ins or corners play from GK When 2 goals are scored targets come on immediately and ball is passed to them from their GK to attack, losing team become targets Activity Play is quick and object is to score as quickly as possible whilst keeping possession Scoring team stays on, losing leaves quick as possible Progression Limited touches on the targets and on the strikers Key Factors Mobility to provide space and opportunities to score. Adjust body shape quickly to strike, first touch into striking path. Striker should stretch the field look to link up but also create chances to turn and score CAMPBELL RIVER YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION CURRICULUM – U10 G Isolated Activity – Shooting & finishing Shooting Organization 1 goal with GK (if you have 2 rotate regularly) 2 gates 5y either side of the goals with spare balls 2 boxes 5y x 5y 7-20y away from goal (dependent on age and ability) Teammates facing each other diagonally Activity Starts with a serving pass from the gate beside the goal The first attacker approaches and shoots then joins the line where the pass came from Server joins opposite line, now the next team go 8 and under DO NOT USE GK’S (if it is too easy progress) Keep Score-competition!! If GK saves he gives the ball to the sides Players who are in line make sure there is always spare balls Teams switch sides after 5 or 10 Progression 1. Limit touches 2. Increase distance from goal 3. Get opposite team to serve then add pressure, keep same rotation Regression-(important for younger players) 1. Remove GK’s 2. Decrease distance 3. Roll the ball instead of pass Key Factors (KF) Approach, get in line and first touch to set up strike Correct use of techniques – instep/laces/lob Bodyst ance before and after strike e.g.. for power land on striking foot Head up to judge GK position Keep the session flowing to allow repetition END WITH FREE PLAY GAME 4V4 OR 5V5 WITH GK’s CAMPBELL RIVER YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION CURRICULUM – U10 Warm up - Storm the castles!! Organization 20 x 25 grid 20x30 grid 5 to 7 balls placed on top of cones Defenders vs Attackers approx. 8-12 players Activity Attackers must knock down all the balls, if they are tagged before they must go back to their ‘land’ and do jumping jacks. Game is played for 90 secs then roles swapped Progression Remove cones each attacker now has a ball and tries to dribble passed the defenders line. Defenders must choose an attacker and only tackle that individual Regression No tackling work on the jockeying technique Key Factors Physical Literacy. Defending techniques of getting low, side on trying to deny them space whilst keeping touching distance Defending 1v1 2v2 SSG Organization Fields approx.. 22 x 32y 2 Pug Goals (double up for younger ages) 4 a side (if more use neutrals or 3 teams with one waiting off field) no GK’s Load balls behind goals Short passes are taken for throw ins and corners Attackers cannot go into their own half Defenders cannot go into opposition half Activity Normal game but conditions will isolate defenders in 2v2 situations KF Let the rules of the game teach Encourage making decisions based on vision Defenders must work together remain compact supply depth and prioritize risk Attackers provide outlet for transition when ball is won CAMPBELL RIVER YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION CURRICULUM – U10 C Isolated Activity - Basic Defending Organization 8-12y x 5-8y, 2 goals (big size use 2 pug nets if needed). Many soccer balls with the coach Lines no bigger than 4 players, run two sessions if there is sufficient coaches, 2 lines of players behind the cones Activity Coach passes to Attacker who dribbles forward, scores for 1 point Defender tries to stop attacker, on winning possession can score in goal opposite When play is done join opposite lines Progression 1.Defenders pass to attackers 2.Change delivery point giving different angles e.g.., from halfway point 3.Play 2v2 Regression 1. Attackers dribble in instead of receiving a pass 2. Attackers have a limited time to score e.g... 3-5 secs Key Factors Approach attacker on a curved run blocking goal, get low, side on get set and deny them space Stay with them, be patient look for mistake from attacker, Push them away from goal, try and win the ball 2v2-stay together, support by blocking goal but being aware of 2nd attacker As ball is passed apply pressure communicate, transition to attack END WITH FREE PLAY GAME 4V4 OR 5V5 CAMPBELL RIVER YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION CURRICULUM – U10 Session Topic – Small group possession Organization Approx. 35 x 22y grid split into 2 with 5 players in each, each group has a ball Activity Start with throwing and catching keep away – I player has the pinnie in hand and when they win the ball they switch roles with that player Progression 1. Now introduce a passing with feet 2. Use 1 ball between the 2 grids when all players have touched the ball it is passed over to the other side, rules still apply with defenders 3. Limit touches Regression 1. Defender only has to touch the ball to win possession 2. Defender cannot tackle but only block passes Key Factors Correct pass technique and weight/accuracy. Body shape, awareness and understanding when to play quick or when to hold the ball (based on positon of defenders) Small sided game – Pro-active passing Organization 15-22y x 20 -30y grid 10 players, 3v3 or 4v4 plus 2 neutrals at each end, who can move laterally but cannot pass to each other and cannot be tackled. Neutrals CAN pass straight through the middle to each other. Coach has balls at the side for quick play Activity Possession team must use the neutrals to transfer the ball from one target to the end targets. Defending team must prevent this, if they win possession and pass to a target, they become the possession team and can score points. Progression Neutrals can pass to each other in an attempt to break defenders apart Add a neutral Regression 1. Make field narrower so attackers don’t have much space 2. Limit their touches on the ball Key Factors (KF) In order to this game to be realistic the attacking team must be able to provide mobility and have the ability to connect a pass from one end to the other Defenders must stay compact and prevent the pass all the way through, plus closing down the ball. In wide areas defenders must work to guide the play in field with their body shape, denying the attackers space and time. Get together, stay together and communicate CAMPBELL RIVER YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION CURRICULUM – U10 Session Topic – Small group possession Organization Triangle approx. 5x5 one defender in the middle with 3 players on the outside.
