Never practice static stretching with this age group, fun
tag/chase games are ideal
Physical Literacy remains an important part of these
activities – twisting, running, reaching, jumping and
kicking
Warm-ups without the soccer ball should be no more
than 10 minutes
Warm ups should be fun, appropriate and active (no
shooting and players waiting in lines)
Give players 30 minutes of game time in practice and at
least 15 minutes of free play where the coach only
encourages
Create competition in your practice! Winning is not
everything but they must foster a competitive mentality
to maximize their learning
Risk management - refrain from taking players for long
runs to warm up or coaching a group larger than 14
Make sure there is success in your session and if there
isn’t manipulate the practice accordingly
Games are all 2v2 to 6v6 (with Goalkeeper)


Come prepared to each session with plans that have the flexibility to progress
and regress the practice if needed – be adaptable!
Coaching position area should be on the side, not in the practice – we want
the players to feel as comfortable as possible
Setup at least 15 minutes beforehand (organize your practice so you can
transition to each game seamlessly without having to move equipment around)
No cell phone use and hot drinks whilst coaching
Wear appropriate soccer attire and try not to wear sunglasses as eye contact
is important
Fluctuate your tone of voice. For instance when you want to be directive,
raise your voice whereas if your asking questions be softer and open
Discourage sitting during breaks
To develop young soccer players repetition is vital so do not worry if you are
repeating the same session a few times, as long as it is developmentally
appropriate
When demonstrating techniques or skills please make sure you are painting a
correct picture, if your not comfortable use a player in your group who is
Have standards and expectations – if players a walking, losing focus, goofing
off, be assertive… but always ask yourself is my session fun and challenging?
Limit coaching points to as little as possible, let them make mistakes and play

When players arrive at the field they should be active –
dribbling, juggling or playing small possession games (not
shooting or inactive)
Discourage sitting and incorporate kneeling or standing with
their foot on the ball when taking instructions
Bring drink bottles to the side of the session
Collect their own soccer balls when it is needed
Before gameplay the players must fill the goals with balls,
then reload on drink breaks and not waiting for a coach to get
the game going
PLAYERS are responsible for referee calls and making
substitutes, when in practice, not coaches
Collect equipment when required
Players are to understand instructions and staying in the

How the Curriculum works…
All the activities presented reflect the needs of the CRYSA players at this age group. The
CRYSA Curriculum can be carried out in a few ways. One is to follow the session sequential
(warm up, small sided game, isolated activity, then game) or you can take a component of the
session and run that as a station within a group practice, for instance you could divide the field
up in to quadrants and run different activities from the curriculum, with a coach at each station

Session Plans
Session plans are designed to give you a detailed document to plan and implement
your soccer practice. Each plan has a diagram with a description adjacent that
explains how to organize, how to progress or alternatively regress the session.
Key Factors (KF) or also known as Coaching Points serve as your learning
outcomes for the session and the techniques/skills you are identifying in the
session. Area or gate sizes are all approximate.
In the diagram there are graphics that symbolize components of your practice, it is
important these are understood so you can deliver the plan. These symbols are as
follows
Player/participant which will change colour if there are different
teams or different roles
Larger cone or traffic cone normally used to make a gate, an
imaginary line or an obstacle
N Neutral Player, can be identified by a different colour
Playing area, grid or zone

Warm up and dribbling activity-Ghostbusters!!
Organisation
Approx 20 x 30y grid
Players start without balls
Activity
One player (the ghost) must run away and the Ghostbuster has to chase and stay as close as possible until coach yells
‘freeze!’’
If the tagger can tag the ‘ghost’ from their frozen position they get a point, if not the ghost gets a point
Progression
1. Now give a ball to one partner. Repeat whilst dribbling the ball
2. Ball is now placed 3 yards in front of partners anywhere in the grid, on coaches signal they must now compete to keep
the ball, whoever has it after 30 secs gets the points
Key Factors (KF)
Head up looking for spaces. Execution of the big/small dribble
Acceleration and deceleration , moves- ways to lose defenders. Changes of direction
Have fun, give rests in between where you can deliver coaching points
Small sided Game - Dribbling
Organisation
Fields approx. 22 x 32y
4 gates 4-8y wide
3 or 4 a side + 2 neutrals, no GK
Load balls at the centre of the gates
Dribble ins are replaced by throw in and corners
Activity
Players must dribble through the either of the 2 gates they are attacking to score
When goal is scored defensive team attack straight away
KF
Let the rules of the game teach
Encourage making decisions based on vision
Create space for others and to receive in dangerous areas
Support around and away from the ball
Be confident in 1v1
When there is a ‘dead end’ we must switch play
Play forward first if possible

CURRICULUM – U10
Isolation Activity– Dribbling/Changing Direction/Ball Manipulation
Put players into teams (no more than 4 players per team)
Organization
5 cones in front with a central point and 3 different cones/poles in front
Distances depend on ability/age
Activity
Begin without balls , the first player has to touch all cones in any order
The player behind must chase copying the first players direction whilst trying to tag them (give
1st player a head start)
Introduce a ball each now players must start in the centre of the 5 cones
They dribble round each of the four surrounding each time returning to the middle cone then
around the final 3 bigger cones to finish
Once players become comfortable turn into a race
Key Factors
Physical Literacy
Ball Mastery – Dribble forward with front/outside laces. Turns, ball manipulation (challenge
players to use sole, inside, outside and laces- demo if you can!)
FUN COMPETITION!
Free play game – This will take place after every Isolated Activity for at
least 15 minutes. This is ‘player time’. Let them have fun and be safe.
Keep their own scores, own referee calls, they collect and reload balls.
Just encourage. If you have many players setup 2 fields adjacent and take
your place in the middle ensuring you can facilitate both.
Organization
Approx. 25 x 35 y Maximum 5v5, GK’s are optional, all balls behind goals that
are reloaded on drink breaks
Throw-ins are replaced with dribble & kick ins, encourage short passes for
corners kicks
Activity
Let them play whilst encouraging to play forward when possible and remind
them of their diamond shape for support
Key Factors
FUN! Learning the game
CAMPBELL RIVER YOUTH
SOCCER ASSOCIATION
CURRICULUM – U10
Warm Up and Dribbling Activity
Organization
20 x 30y grid, different coloured pinnies scattered, 8-12 players spaced out
Activity
Begin without a ball players move around the grid in different ways (skipping,
jumping, hopping, running) When coach yells a colour they must touch all the
pinnies of that colour then put their hands in the air
Progression
1. Now touch with different body part each time
2. Now each player has a ball each and touch the pinnie with the ball using
dribbling techniques.
3. Instead of calling hold up the pinnie so players have to see what to do next
4. Let players see how many they can dribble to in a minute
Key Factors
FUN! Physical literacy, introducing ball control and ball master, spatial awareness
Small Sided Game - Dribbling
Organisation
Fields approx.. 22 x 32y with end zones 4-8y wide marked with cones on the side and no more than 3 across
the field, 3v3 or 4v4 + Neutral no GK
Load balls at the ends of the field, dribble ins or short passes are replaced by throw in and corners
Activity
As a team they score a goal by getting one player to dribble into the end zone, after this they give the ball to
the other team so they can attack. No players can go into their own zone to defend
Progression
1. When they score play continues and they attack the other end so play is non-stop
2. Defenders can now go into the zone once a point has been scored, this will force the attacker to get out
and play quick
Key Factors
Let the rules of the game teach
Encourage making decisions based on vision
Create space for others and to receive in dangerous areas
Support around and away from the ball
Be confident in 1v1
Always look to play forward first

Isolated Activity – 1V1 Attacking
Organisation
Grid is 8-12y x 8-15y /gates are 3-5y
No more than eight players (run 2 grids along side each other if
numbers are large)
All balls are at one end with defenders
Activity
Start as a tag game without balls, blue player must try and get
through the gates opposite without yellow tagging
Introduce balls, Defender passes to attacker who attempts to dribble
through either gate for 1 point
If defender wins possession they can score by dribbling through
gates at opposite end
Afterwards they switch lines (this rotation is very important as this
develops transition and understanding of movement after the ball)
Progression
1.Attack the middle gate
2.Start from an angle behind the gate
Regression
Add a pause line (marked with cones as shown) that when the
defender crosses this they cannot retreat behind it giving the
attacker more room for success
Instead of a pass to setup the attack, let the attacker dribble in
themselves (balls are then passed back down to attackers that are
waiting)
Key Factors
Get in line, body position, positive first touch, head up and assess,
dribble toward defender, wait for delay or commitment then
execute change in direction or end product.

Warm Up – Running with the ball
Organization
15 x 20y grid with small grid inside 8x8y
Players start without a ball
Players have to get from each side to the next without being tagged off the
defender, if they do roles switch
Progression
1. Outside players all have a ball and have to get across the other side to get a
point . Defenders now have to steal the ball to switch out
2. Increase the defenders
3. Decrease the size
KF
Players make decisions on when and where to run based on where the pressure is
and what they see (big spaces to run into)
Acceleration and deceleration at appropriate times
Small ball touches for close control big for sprinting
Small sided game - Dribbling and switching play
Organization

Isolated Activity - Ball Mastery
Organization
20 x 30y with 5 gates 2-5y in length
Each player has a ball
Activity
Players dribble into space and through gates manipulating the ball with all surfaces of the foot.
Introduce turns, feints and moves such as scissors, Ronaldo chop, Maradona (spend time on
doing this give 1 on 1 help after quick group demo ) (Give them options don’t direct the
players on what to do) Let players make up their own routine by combining moves
Progression
1. Competition of how many gates a player can dribble through in a minute
2. 2 players become defenders, with pinnies in hand, who try to steal the ball from the
defenders.
3. They give the pinnie to player they have dispossessed.
4. Attackers can ‘hide’ in gates for 3 seconds to avoid defenders
KF
Use all surfaces of the foot-sole, inside, outside, laces. Encourage deceleration, acceleration
and head up. Teach turns , moves and the correct dribble technique and running with the ball

CURRICULUM – U10
This is a key activity that is recommended to repeat throughout your program in Warm Ups’
and Isolated Activities. This builds transitional habits which will give your players urgency
and understand the importance of making decisions at speed.
Isolation Activity 1V1 and transition from attack to defence
Organization
Approx. 50 x 30 split in to 2 lanes with small goals on one side
All players have a ball each
Cones marking attackers starting point and a shooting zone (No more than 4 stood in line, run
extra identical grid if coaches numbers permit)
Activity
First attacker runs and scores into the net straight ahead of them
As soon as this happens the next attacker (blue) does the same but the yellow must close them
down and try to block/win possession
As soon as the second attacker scores they pressure the next yellow attacker
If the defender wins the ball they score too but the rotation stays the same
Progression
1. Player can score in any goal and return to the opposite line
2. Players can only score when they are past the green marker (shooting zone)
Regression
Players close down players coming from behind them (in their line) instead of in the next group
Key Factors
Dribble forward at speed based on visual cue of attacker scoring
Head up to assess pressure and goal position
Make decisions based on pressure and spatial awareness
Change speed and direction, manipulation of the ball and close finishing
Not much coaching is needed it’s a fun, active game that focuses on transition (what to do
after they have scored)
You may have to keep reminding them to close down but this will create good habits.

Isolated activity that provides that fundamentals of receiving and progressing the
ball forward. Playing out of defence and through the midfield all require these
basic skills therefore these activities are encouraged to develop a ‘possession’
style of play
2v1 Passing and receiving
Organization
Approx. 10x15y grid, cones mark 5-10y zone in the middle for defender
Lines no longer than 3 players, at either end 2v1 in the middle, Run 2 to 3 grids if
possible
Activity
Object of the game is to transfer the ball from 1 to 3 and then back the other way
constantly, whoever passes the ball out goes out to the end of that line and the
receiving player enters the play to continue the activity. The defender must try and
steal possession. When 1 passes to 2 they can pass straight to 3 or pass to 5 who
can then pass to 3 who will attack as 5 joins their line. If defender steals they rotate
with the player they stole from
Progression
Make the gird in the middle smaller
Regression
Attacker can receive outside the grid where defender cannot enter
Key Factors (KF)
Pass to first attacker must carry the appropriate weight and accuracy.
Attacker must try to open body out facing forward when receiving , receive on back
foot if possible
Head up before and after receiving. Movement of team mate supporting in wide
area or in behind defender

Session Topic – Small group possession
Organization
Approx. 35 x 22y grid split into 2 with 5 players in each, each group has a ball
Activity
Start with throwing and catching keep away – I player has the pinnie in hand and when they
win the ball they switch roles with that player
Progression
1. Now introduce a passing with feet
2. Use 1 ball between the 2 grids when all players have touched the ball it is passed over
to the other side, rules still apply with defenders
3. Limit touches
Regression
1. Defender only has to touch the ball to win possession
2. Defender cannot tackle but only block passes
Key Factors
Correct pass technique and weight/accuracy. Body shape, awareness and understanding
when to play quick or when to hold the ball (based on positon of defenders)
Small sided game – Pro-active passing
Organization
15-22y x 20 -30y grid 10 players, 3v3 or 4v4 plus 2 neutrals at each end, who can move laterally but
cannot pass to each other and cannot be tackled. Neutrals CAN pass straight through the middle to each
other. Coach has balls at the side for quick play
Activity
Possession team must use the neutrals to transfer the ball from one target to the end targets. Defending
team must prevent this, if they win possession and pass to a target, they become the possession team and
can score points. Progression
Neutrals can pass to each other in an attempt to break defenders apart
Add a neutral
Regression
1. Make field narrower so attackers don’t have much space
2. Limit their touches on the ball
Key Factors (KF)
In order to this game to be realistic the attacking team must be able to provide mobility and have the
ability to connect a pass from one end to the other
Defenders must stay compact and prevent the pass all the way through, plus closing down the ball. In
wide areas defenders must work to guide the play in field with their body shape, denying the attackers
space and time. Get together, stay together and communicate
