Assistant Professor (Contaminated Site Assessment and Remediation)

Assistant Professor (Contaminated Site Assessment and Remediation) The Department of Soil Science, College of Agriculture and Bioresources, in partnership with the Toxicology Program, at the University of Saskatchewan invite applications for a tenure track position at the rank of assistant professor in the areas of contaminated site assessment, remediation and/or reclamation beginning July 1, 2015 or soon thereafter. The Department of Soil Science and the Toxicology Program seek an individual who is passionate about teaching and research related to contaminated sites and understanding how contaminants in terrestrial systems move through, interact with, and influence the soil environment. This position is associated with the Northern Ecosystem Toxicology Initiative (NETI) coordinated through the Toxicology Centre and creates an exciting opportunity to join an engaged community of soil science and toxicology scholars. The Department of Soil Science is a recognized leader in teaching, research, and outreach and engagement. The Department offers Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees in soil science, as well as undergraduate programs in soil science, environmental science, and renewable resource management. The Department of Soil Science has world-‐class expertise in isotopic analysis with unique infrastructure dedicated towards the assessment of heavy C and N isotopes in soil ecosystems. Furthermore, the University of Saskatchewan is home to the largest academic concentration of environmental toxicologists in North America. The Toxicology Program offers Ph.D., M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees in toxicology. The ideal candidate will be able to bridge these two disciplines and develop innovative solutions to the restoration and assessment of pollutant impacts on the terrestrial environment. Ideally, the candidate will have demonstrated expertise in contaminated site restoration or assessment, or contaminant transport and exposure modeling in terrestrial systems, and a proven track record of working in a multi-‐stakeholder environment. The University of Saskatchewan is home to Canada’s only synchrotron, the Canadian Light Source, which provides unique and world class opportunities to explore contaminant/biota interactions at the molecular scale. Duties: The incumbent will be expected to develop a successful and well-‐funded program of research on assessment or restoration of contaminated sites, and/or on understanding how contaminants in terrestrial systems are transported and interact within the soil environment to influence the health of ecological or human receptors. The incumbent will deliver courses that will inspire students in the environmental science and toxicology programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Teaching and administrative duties will be assigned according to the expertise of the successful applicant and needs of the programs. The incumbent will be expected to provide leadership and mentorship to graduate and undergraduate students in their research and studies, and to engage with relevant stakeholders to identify issues, obtain research funds, and effectively communicate research results. Qualifications: Candidates will have a Ph.D. in soil science, toxicology, or an equivalent field. For appointment at the level of assistant professor, there should be strong evidence of the ability to introduce an in-‐depth field based program of research related to the assessment and/or restoration of contaminated sites, or contaminant transport and exposure modeling in terrestrial systems. Evidence of high quality post-‐secondary teaching is an asset. All candidates should have a demonstrated ability to operate as a team player in a collegial environment and the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders. A letter of application, CV, a research statement, copies of relevant publications, a teaching statement outlining relevant teaching experience and philosophy, academic transcripts and contact information for three referees should be submitted electronically to: Ken Van Rees, Department Head, Department of Soil Science, University of Saskatchewan, 51 Campus Drive, Saskatoon, SK S7N 5A8, Canada (Phone +1 306 966-‐6853; Email: [email protected]). This position comes with a comprehensive benefits package which includes pension plan, life insurance (compulsory and voluntary), sick leave, travel insurance, death benefit, dental plan, extended health and vision care plan, employee assistance program and flexible health and wellness spending program. The wage range for Assistant Professor is: $90,796 -‐ $109,108. Review of applications will begin on April 15, 2015.
