A rough year for the
auto industry
C
all it the price of oil or the price of turmoil, as in
the financial kind; it’s been a rough year for the
auto industry.
Hawaii’s new car sales, year-to-date through April, are
down 31 percent. It is hard to find much solace in the fact
that, across the country, U.S. sales of new vehicles for the
same period were down 37 percent.
So, where are we going from here?
The Motor Trend Auto Show summit in Detroit provided HADA with
information on trends in the industry, including new car auto shows starting
to include Certified Pre-Owned Showrooms, because right now, dealers in
many markets are selling more used cars than new cars. With the dramatic
improvements in auto manufacturing in the past few years, cars are now
being driven further, lasting longer, requiring little maintenance, and
running longer on the tires.
Combine that trend toward used cars with Hawaii’s remaining employed
tightening their purse strings and it looks like new car sales will adjust to a
“new normal” for awhile with ever-increasing competition for both the new
and used car sale or lease.
We see car and truck advertising starting to blossom in the media again
as adjustments have been made by dealers. Now both new and used car
customers are being pursued in this new-normal marketplace.
The answer to where we’re going is this: We’re staying put. With some
realistic expectations.
The sun will come up as it always does. It’s just shining a little brighter now
on used cars as the automakers adjust their new car products.

First Hawaiian International Auto Show
Attendance +8.2% in 2009
The Hawaii auto show was the only one of two dozen Motor Trend auto shows to see an increase
Bucking a national downward trend in attendance,
“where down 5% was the new up” according to one auto
show producer in the mainland, Hawaii’s First Hawaiian
International Auto Show recorded an 8.2% gain in paid
attendance.
A Motor Trend-commissioned independent third-party
Foresight Research study, entitled “2009 Auto Show ROI
Report” which shows the influence of an auto show on
the vehicle purchase decision, showed that “one-quarter
(25%) of all vehicle buyers reported attending an auto
show in the past 12 months.” See graph:
First Hawaiian Bank’s vice president of marketing, Brandt
Farias said, in attributing credit for the large unexpected
gain in attendance, “it was a gang tackle.”

ALL BUYERS
Certainly many new additions to the show (and most
importantly, a great calendar break this year) contributed
to the gain. Listed were 10 reasons:
1. spring break coinciding with the show this year
2. the Kuhio Day state holiday falling in the middle of
the four show days
3. the five 2010 vehicle models which most shows
didn’t see because of their earlier show dates
4. the First Hawaiian Bank’s $25,000 Cash Giveaway
promotion
5. the First Hawaiian Bank “free admission” first
day coupon promotion offered to bank customers
generated early attendance and a resulting buzz
about the show which likely resulted in a boost in
overall paid attendance
6. the additional car club displays (10 this year,
compared to 3-4 in previous years) created a buzz
among “car mavens”
7. the antique car club display featuring the 1907
Ford N—seen only for the second time on Oahu—
and the 1931 Ford Packard—a rare vehicle not
usually seen in auto shows
8. the donation of airtime by TV, radio, and the cable
network to promote a new tax deduction available
on qualifying new car purchases coincided with the
opening of the show
9. a front page story in the Honolulu Advertiser
10. a large email blast generating early show ticket
purchase through the internet

Another interesting finding: “86% of people who attend
auto shows’ report telling others about their experience
at the auto show.”

The traditional “big draw” features at the auto show, like
the million dollar exotic car display, continued to show
up in the surveys as crowd-pleasers and likely attendance
generators as in previous years. But the new
features and fortuitous calendar break were
big contributing factors to the increase.
Next year’s show has been
scheduled to coincide with the
March Spring Break and Kuhio
Day holiday.

bankruptcy, and the day Chrysler declared it was
emerging from its bankruptcy. All the automakers in
attendance (GM, Chrysler, Ford, Kia, Subaru, Hyundai,
Smart, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Mitsubishi) expressed
their continuing commitment to auto shows, with some
saying displays may be slightly modified to “smaller kits”
to save money in 2010 and a few automakers indicating
slight modifications to floor space. But most expressed a
“stay the course” intention.
Among the conclusions about auto shows for next year
were these:
1. Email is a good way to generate early show
ticket sales.
2. Ride ‘n Drives are popular new features at auto
shows and are “very influential” in buying decisions
made, according to the survey. Motor Trend
officials said that likely many more shows will soon
adopt this new feature.
3. The Auto Show Certified Pre-owned Showroom
is seeing interest at new car shows because of

the increased interest in CPO vehicles and the
automaker push for sales of such. The Milwaukee
Auto Show, the first to experiment with such,
reported strong support from the 14 dealers who
participated by providing a car each (with no
representative present, and just a dealership phone
number and basic information on the vehicle). All
dealers said they would again provide a vehicle
for next year’s show. Holly Hansen, from the
Milwaukee show, said “foot traffic in that part of
the show was fantastic.”
GM officials pointed out that Americans bought 16
million new cars per year during the last few years and
that current projections are for 9.9 million sales this year.
“The average age of a car (today) is longer now than at
any time since WWII,” said GM’s Scott Settlemire, “and
the country’s scrap rate is 12 million cars a year.”
“My point,” he said, “this business is
going to come back.”
