CTAA READY RECKONER
CONTAINER PACKS & UNPACKS
Important Facts

Hazards associated with container packs/unpacks include falling freight/being struck by
freight, sprain/strain type injuries from repetitive lifting, reaching above shoulder height,
bending to floor level, twisting, lifting/carrying heavy items, person/forklift contact, exposure
to fumigants.

You should have a documented system of work on container packs/unpacks and evidence of
workers being trained in this.
Remember





Your work procedure should follow the principles of health and safety legislation.
o
Eliminate manual handling by using a forklift with appropriate attachment.
o
Minimise reaching above shoulder height.
o
Minimise lowering to floor level.
Workers should always review the manifest to check the weights, size and type of items before
commencing unpacking.
Every container can be different. The unpack team should have the necessary experience and
communication needed for the box.
Be careful with new workers. They will be keen to impress, but won’t know your systems.
Therefore, they are more at risk of being injured.
Keep the area clean. Ensure all equipment used, (bolt cutters, container ramps, pallets) are in
good condition. Don’t accept or make excuses for faulty equipment. It leads to lost
productivity, injuries and increases in costs.
Caution

WorkSafe expect that workers will be OUT of the container when the forklift is
entering/exiting.

Shoulder injuries are common with long term workers doing manual container packs/unpacks
resulting in surgery and workers compensation claims.
