FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 22, 2015 From Fr. John Kim Gospel Reflection “The hour has come,” Jesus says. Throughout the Gospel of John, Jesus explicitly expresses that “the hour has not yet come” (Jn 2:4; 4:23; 5:25; 7:30; etc). Then there it is. Jesus simply states, “The hour has come” (Jn 12:23). The time for the fulfillment of God’s glory through his suffering, death and resurrection has finally arrived, and Jesus himself expresses “I am troubled now” (Jn 12:27). Thus Jesus asks God the Father to give him the strength to carry on the mission in his time of trouble. God the Father who spoke to Jesus two other times – Jesus’ Baptism (Mt 3:17) and Transfiguration (Mt 17:5) – confirms the importance of Jesus’ mission saying, “I have glorified it and will glorify it again” (Jn 12:28). Indeed, the hour is near for us as well. It is time for us to prepare for “the hour” - the most important time throughout the liturgical year, the Holy Triduum. So, how have you been? Have you tried your best to get close to the Lord? Are you still struggling with your habitual sins? Are you afraid of coming closer to the Lord? My sisters and brothers in Christ, the time is near. Let’s do our best to prepare for “the hour.” Living in God This Week “Today if you hear His voice, harden not your heart” (Heb 3:15). Here is the voice from God: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths” (Mt 3:3). The best way to prepare for the way of the Lord is to receive the sacrament of reconciliation. Did you come to the penance service? If not so, I hope that you will be able to come to our regular confession hours: Tuesday 6:00 p.m. - 6:25 p.m., Thursday 5:30 p.m. - 6:25 p.m., and Saturday 3:45 p.m. 4:45 p.m. Please come to the Lord and receive God’s endless mercy. Welcome to Christ the King! Thank you for joining us at Christ the King Catholic Church. We are happy to have you with us today, and hope that you feel welcome. Our parish is a very busy community of faith. Are you new to the Catholic Church? Have you been away from the Church for some time? You are invited to worship with us. Contact our parish office if you would like to learn more about the Catholic faith, discuss plans for marriage or baptism, or schedule a chat with Fr. John. If you would like to become a member of our parish, you can register online, or pick up a form in the office. We look forward to seeing you again soon! Barron This week’s Lenten booklet reflection by Fr. Robert Barron mentions “the fear of death is like a cloud, a terrible shadow that falls over human life and experience”. We use this fear of death to oppress others, to dominate them. Just as a dictator threatens people with killing to overwhelm the weak. He asks what life would be like if we were not afraid. If death had finally “lost its sting” and we were not immune to its suffering, but unaffected by it. If we would believe that we are loved by a “love that transcends death, and would fill us with exuberance” then as Jesus says “Do Not Be Afraid”. “Jesus came to inaugurate a fearless and death-defying love.” Prayer Intentions Pope Francis’ Prayer Intentions • • That those involved in scientific research may serve the well -being of the whole human person … That the unique contribution of women to the life of the Church may be recognized always … Bishop Vasquez’ Prayer Intention • As we near the end of the Lenten season and prepare for Holy Week, let us enter these solemn celebrations with prayerful contemplation ... Pope Francis proclaimed 2015 a Year of Consecrated Life, starting in November, 2014, and ending in February, 2016. Its purpose, as stated by the Vatican is to “make a grateful remembrance of the recent past” while embracing “the future with hope.” “Our brothers and sisters in Christ living consecrated lives make great contributions to our society through a vast number of ministries,” said Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky, president of USCCB. “They teach in our schools, take care of the poor and the sick and bring compassion and the love of Christ to those shunned by society; others lead lives of prayer in contemplation for the world.” Let us pray for all those who are living consecrated lives: CRU Catholics (UMHB Students) Exciting news! Just a reminder, the Cru Catholic ministry nights will resume this coming Tuesday, March 24th. Praying you had a blessed and restful Spring Break! Prayer of Thomas Merton My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. Nor do I really know myself. And the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. And I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore I will trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me. And you will never leave me to face my struggles alone. —From Thoughts in Solitude (1956) Christ the King Catholic Church Belton www.ctkbelton.org Page 3 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 22, 2015 Around the Parish Around the Diocese Gabriel Project The Cross of Simon is now in the Narthex with cross-shaped paper tags listing the various supplies needed to support the Gabriel Project, a local support program for women in crisis pregnancies. Medicine & the Gospel of Life Abortion, contraception, abortifacient drugs, In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), embryonic stem cell research: some of the most controversial issues of our time. These are topics of daily conversation and affect the most intimate aspects of our lives, yet many of us either don’t know or don’t understand the Church’s teaching on them. To prepare us for these conversations, to help us learn what the Church teaches, why the Church teaches it, and ethical alternatives, Founding President of The John Paul II Foundation for Life and Family, Arland Nichols, will present “Medicine & the Gospel of Life” on April 18 from 8:30 a.m. until noon at St. Michael’s Catholic Academy. “Far from a never-ending list of no’s, the Church’s teachings on these issues are primarily an affirmation of great goods to which the Church proclaims a resounding ‘YES!’” A continental breakfast will be included. Tickets are $10 and are available at www.jpiilifecenter.org in the Calendar of Events. For more information: [email protected] or 512-407-2900.
