The 27th annual Vitalize Conference is upon us, and we invite you to attend this one-of-a-kind conference. Continued
training and development for the nonprofit/voluntary sector is vital for nonprofit organizations to stay informed and
current. This conference promises to recharge your power and deliver valuable knowledge that can be applied to your
day-to-day work.
Vitalize 2015 occurs Thursday, June 18 to Saturday, June 20 at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton.
Registration begins Thursday, June 18 at 3:00 p.m., followed by opening ceremonies, greetings from the Government of
Alberta and a keynote presentation from Spencer West.
Spencer’s incredible story is sure to inspire. Having lost both his legs at the age of five, Spencer defied the odds by
taking on grueling physical challenges to raise awareness on social issues. From climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, to trekking
between Edmonton and Calgary on his hands, Spencer embraces life’s obstacles for positive change.
On Friday, June 19, and Saturday, June 20, delegates will enjoy a variety of educational workshops arranged according
to seven themes: Communications, Creating Community, Human Resources, Leadership Institute, Organizational
Development, Recharge Your Power and Youth.
This program guide outlines the many opportunities offered at Vitalize to enhance your skill set. We recommend
choosing workshops best suited to your personal and professional development.
New to the line-up of workshops this year is the Leadership Institute. This concentrated stream will offer six workshops
examining the many facets of leadership. Delegates who attend all six workshops will be awarded a leadership
certificate signed by the instructors.
After Friday’s workshops, unwind, feast and let Rapid Fire Theatre indulge your comedic side with their world renowned
improv theatre. Friday evening is a great opportunity to network and discuss your day of learning with colleagues, while
sampling delicious foods from the Shaw Conference Centre’s accomplished chefs.
As our closing keynote, we’re honoured to present Jon Montgomery. Host of The Amazing Race Canada and 2010
Olympic Gold Medalist, Jon will take you on a journey of the highs and lows of training for the Olympics on home soil,
and how to overcome challenges for personal growth.
Vitalize remains a one-of-a-kind development opportunity at an affordable price – only $195 (plus GST). Early Bird

Rumour has it that laughter is a great stress reliever…
Rapid Fire Theatre was created in 1988 by a talented group of performers who
wanted to bring the improvisational comedy of TheatreSports® to Edmonton
audiences on a regular basis. Now in its third decade, Rapid Fire Theatre has
expanded into semi-scripted performance, sketch comedy, theatre for young
audiences and full-length plays. On the international scene, Rapid Fire Theatre is
renowned as an improv champion, having competed and won titles in Canada, the
United States and overseas. Since 2000 the company has produced Canada’s
largest improv comedy festival Improvaganza, a 10-day event welcoming more
than 40 performers and thousands of fans to two Edmonton venues. Rapid Fire
Theatre is Edmonton’s premier destination for improvised comedy. Friday evening
promises to be a festival of belly laughs. See you there!

Featuring: Jon Montgomery
Proudly Canadian, Jon Montgomery says that being the host of The
Amazing Race Canada has given him an even greater appreciation for
the country. “I already had a profound sense I was a lucky man to be
Canadian, but doing this show, you get to meet other Canadians, you
get to see how they interact with the racers and a sense of
commonality amongst the people.” The Amazing Race Canada
recently finished airing its second season.
A casual trip to Canada Olympic Park in 2002 left an indelible mark on
Montgomery when he witnessed a skeleton race and immediately fell
in love with the sport. Shortly thereafter, he began competing competitively and enjoying quick success. Montgomery’s
start to his rookie season on the World Cup could not have been drawn more perfectly, and he kicked off his World Cup
campaign with a bronze-medal finish on his home track in Calgary. His sophomore season was equally remarkable
where he enjoyed a breakout season by achieving five podium finishes, including his first World Cup victory and a silver
medal at the World Championships.
Montgomery captured the hearts of Canadians and the attention of everyone during the 2010 Vancouver Winter
Games. After years of hard work, training and perseverance, Montgomery won a gold medal in the skeleton, securing
his place in history as one of the best. His celebratory walk through Whistler showcased his passion, spirit, and sense
of humour – traits he brings to every platform, whether in front of a live audience or acting as the host of The Amazing
Race Canada.

LEAD 1 Leadership in the 21 st Century
tHeMe: Leadership Institute
sPeaKeR: Wendy Wilton and Kim arsenault
Our definition of leadership has changed over the centuries. No longer can we expect people to respond positively to
command and control, nor can we expect people will respect a leader who is all fluff and no substance. Through the
eyes of Ben Zander, former conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, we will explore leadership practices the
world’s best leaders are using to provide environments that foster engagement and accountability.
LEAD 2 self-awareness using DisC (Dominance, Influence,
steadiness, Conscientiousness)
tHeMe: Leadership Institute
sPeaKeR: Wendy Wilton and Kim arsenault
Every one of us is unique in our behavioural styles. Every style brings gifts to the table. These gifts can often be
overused and interpreted as challenging by others. Our self-awareness component will consist of a behavioural style
analysis using the DiSC tool to help understand ourselves and the impact we have on others.

LEAD 3 Leadership
tHeMe: Leadership Institute
sPeaKeR: Wendy Wilton and Kim arsenault
Great leaders are always great communicators. Without the ability to communicate effectively, we cannot expect
people to be willing and able to follow us. During this workshop we will discuss many elements brilliant
communicators possess and some pitfalls we need to avoid when communicating.
LEAD 4 Leading and Building teams
tHeMe: Leadership Institute
sPeaKeR: Wendy Wilton and Kim arsenault
Teams are ever changing, ever evolving bodies. One month we may be firing on all cylinders, the next month we feel
like we are back to square one. During this workshop we will explore Bruce Tuckman’s stages of team development
and devise concrete strategies for moving new and existing teams through the phases, whether we are a new team
or a team who has experienced “regression”. We will also overlay Lencioni’s work on the five Dysfunctions of a Team
and explore which dysfunctions we may be experiencing and how to overcome them.
LEAD 5 surviving and thriving through Change and transition
tHeMe: Leadership Institute
sPeaKeR: Wendy Wilton and Kim arsenault
The old adage “nothing is constant but change” has never been truer. The rate of change today is unprecedented and
speeding up exponentially. We all need to understand natural reactions to change and transition and come up with
personal and organizational strategies to help ease the journey to “the new way”. Through examining the change
roller-coaster (our natural reaction to change), we will discuss proven techniques for easing the pain and anxiety
often felt during times of transition.
LEAD 6 Noon Coaching
tHeMe: Leadership Institute
sPeaKeR: Wendy Wilton and Kim arsenault
Coaching has many different definitions. In this workshop we will discuss the “Coach Approach”, what it means to
be “coachlike” and provide a coaching model to help the coaches on your team find the answers they are looking for,
from within. We will revisit key communication skills that successful leaders employ in their coaching practices and
discuss when coaching is the appropriate leadership style/tool to use and when it is not.

1A How to use the Differences in People to strengthen your
organization
tHeMe: organizational Development
sPeaKeR: Bill Brandon
In this highly interactive workshop, we will discuss how personal preferences can influence the way people approach
and deal with situations. We will explore how employees or volunteers can leverage these differences to improve the
organization’s ability to understand problems, identify options, make decisions and build commitments to those decisions.
To get us started an informal tool will be provided to help you generate a rough estimate of your own preferences. This
tool is intended to provide results similar to those you would get from the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).
1B Make Dollars Make sense: the essentials of Financial
Responsibilities for Nonprofit organizations
tHeMe: Creating Community
sPeaKeR: stuart Clark
This interactive workshop will provide a practical overview of what nonprofit leaders and board members should be
thinking about and doing to support a healthy finance system in their organization. We will explore the meaning of
nonprofit finance, get clear on what financial responsibilities matter and discuss “good governance” and how it
relates to financial management. Most importantly delegates will be given the opportunity to relate topics presented
to their own organizations and experiences. Further resources, tips and links will be provided for delegates to explore
after the workshop.

(Delivered in english and translated to French)
tHeMe: social Innovation
sPeaKeR: Ben Weinlick
There is much talk about social innovation these days but few people and organizations are really making it happen.
In this workshop social innovator Ben Weinlick will demystify what social innovation means. He will share his
experience and what is needed in nonprofit organizations to cause authentic social innovation to emerge.

can offset your training costs by providing up to $10,000 per trainee. Numerous Alberta nonprofit/voluntary sector
employers are already taking advantage of training program grants that are benefiting their staff and improving their
workplace. Learn about the eligibility requirements, the application and reimbursement process and find out how
others in the nonprofit/voluntary sector are using the Canada-Alberta Job Grant to train workers.
1E Generations exposed! unexpected Insights into the People
you Work With
tHeMe: Creating Community
sPeaKeR: Merge Gupta sunderji
You can’t help but notice the diversity in age of the people you’re working with. In fact, it’s not unusual to find
yourself in a setting today with all four generations present: Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X-ers and
Millennials. They each have their own values, expectations, habits and work styles. If you fail to acknowledge and
develop strategies to actively manage this diversity, you will find yourself facing conflict, inefficiency and negativity,
all eventually leading to a loss of your crucial volunteer base. Join Merge for 90 power-packed, practical minutes as
she draws upon material from her recent book. She will explain the differences between each generation and give
you the tools to consciously and deliberately adapt your leadership style to communicate, motivate and lead today’s
multi-generational volunteer force.
1F 50 shades of Beige: Communicate with the
Cross-Cultural advantage
tHeMe: Communications

Successful organizations understand being able to communicate cross-culturally in the workplace leads to enhanced
productivity, performance and employee engagement. Managing diversity drives profitability, leads to innovation and
promotes an inspiring workplace culture.

2A From Red Neck to Pink: How Provincial attitudes and
actions are Changing in Relation to sexual orientation and
Gender Identity in alberta
tHeMe: Human Resources
sPeaKeR: Dr. Kristopher Wells
In the 10 years since same-sex marriage has been legalized in Alberta, extraordinary legal, social, and cultural shifts
have occurred. This workshop explores the attitudes and values that have moved us away from the infamous home of
the “lake of fire”, and the dominant archetypes of the roughneck, redneck, cowboy and oil executive that have ruled
Alberta’s cultural and political imagination for decades. We will explore how Alberta has moved from being one of
the most regressive human rights provinces, to a leader in sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ) equality in Canada.
We will also discuss the important work that remains to be accomplished.
2B talking in Circles
tHeMe: Communications
sPeaKeR: Bill Carr
“Talking in Circles” is about communication at a deeper level than many of us are used to. It is about talking,
listening, creating and working with a group of distinct individuals. It is about team talk, team think and team create
by enhancing the ability of each member of a team to connect with one another. It is about creating space for
authentic human exchange.

2C Politique du travail…en avons-nous besoins ?!
(Delivered in French and translated to english)
tHeMe: Creating Communities
sPeaKeR: Mirande alexandre
Policies…Do We Need them?!
This workshop will increase delegates’ knowledge about policy and procedure manuals and how to create and write
various policies according to their organization’s needs. Delegates will learn about the different categories that may
be included in a general “Operations Policy and Procedures Manual” such as:
• Administration, Customer Service, Accounting, Emergency Procedures, Hiring Practices, Personnel, Safety and
Security and Job Descriptions.
2D Building a successful Website on a Budget
tHeMe: Communications
sPeaKeR: David Papp
The online world is constantly changing and today’s modern website is no exception. Websites are now highly
functional, dynamic, mobile friendly tools that can be easily maintained. Creating such a site on a budget requires a
little more homework but doesn’t have to be difficult. Once you understand your needs and have a wish list of
functionality, you can turn to a number of “off the shelf” content management systems, such as WordPress, to help
ease the technology hurdle. Use pre-built templates and free or low-cost plugins to build a site that supports tablets
and smartphones and helps engage your audience. Share with social media tools to expand your visibility and
promote current events. Use analytics to provide insight and turn your website into a measurable marketing tool.
Every delegate will be provided with a free booklet that includes suggestions and ideas to use when building your
successful website.
2E turtle training for the Hare: Why slow ‘n’ steady trumps
Fast ‘n’ Furious
tHeMe: organizational Development
sPeaKeR: Merge Gupta sunderji
In today’s fast-paced, high-tech, multi-tasking, get-things-done environment, it’s sometimes easy to forget about the
pulse of what really makes your organization tick – volunteers! And as a leader, you want stakeholders who are
passionate about your vision and engaged in your endeavors. This entertaining and fast-paced workshop uses
metaphors and analogies to drive home a single underlying message – building strength and sustainability in your
volunteers is fundamental to long-term victory for your organization. Hares may be faster, but turtles win the race! In
a positive and entertaining look at growth and productivity, Merge will answer these questions by offering you
specific and practical key ideas to build strength and sustainability in your volunteer base and your organization.

2F Give the (Re)Boot to Work-Life Balance
tHeMe: Human Resources
sPeaKeR: tina Varughese
Only 23 percent of working Canadians are highly satisfied with life. In fact, one-third of Canadians feel they have
more work to do than time permits. Work-life balance is not a gender issue. Men have the same issues balancing
career and family as women do and struggle obtaining work-life balance. With technological advances coupled with
more women entering the workforce due to economic pressures, work-life balance can seem evasive and
unobtainable. In this relevant yet humorous workshop, delegates will learn essential tools, tips and strategies to
minimize stress, maximize efficiency, improve productivity and boost positivity both at work and at home.

Human centered service design thinking is an approach to disciplined innovation as a way to help people and
organizations collaborate and navigate complex challenges better. Design Thinking is empathizing with people who
might use a service innovation, collaborating and then making quick prototypes you can test. The best part is you
don’t have to be a designer to prototype. In this workshop you’ll have the opportunity to go through a design thinking
exercise to get a feel for how it works and how you might apply it in your work. Come learn by doing!
4B Deep service: a Call to a Higher Level
tHeMe: Creating Communities
sPeaKeR: Bill Carr
Every industry is a service industry; every life a life of service at some level. The deep truth is whether at work, in our
community or in our home life, we are serving somebody. As leaders and managers, we serve our company,
employees and clients, which lead to serving our community and world. At home we serve our families and
neighbourhoods, which leads again to serving our society and world. The depth and quality of this service is directly
affected by how we see ourselves as being “in service”.

4C Re-imagining the Nonprofit/Voluntary sector
(Delivered in english and translated to French)
tHeMe: Creating Communities
sPeaKeR: Pieter de Vos
The workshop introduces new ways of understanding the nonprofit/voluntary sector (NPVS) and its role in society.
The NPVS is imagined as a site of diversity, change and innovation. It is a key contributor for building community,
delivering essential services and promoting democratic activity in Alberta. Technology, socio-economic and paradigm
shifts are reconfiguring the landscape for nonprofits and leading to opportunities and challenges. These include: new
ways of funding, networking, managing talent and measuring impacts. These realities will be discussed within the
larger framework of the NPVS – “what it is” and “what it is becoming”.
4D Ignite your evolution
tHeMe: organizational Development
sPeaKeR: Lorraine Behnan
We live in a fast-forward and highly competitive world. Continual evolution is necessary for you and your
organization to succeed. You can fire up your personal and community goals and excel by adjusting attitudes and

In this workshop delegates will be invited to engage in discussion relating to how our individual perceptions,
assumptions and mindset affect our thoughts, behaviours and attitudes and outcomes of our personal interactions. In
addition we will explore the need for professionalism, strategies for managing our own anger during difficult
interactions and strategies for managing strong emotions in difficult people we interact with. The presentation will
also include a specific focus on the skill of defusing angry people and dealing with verbally aggressive subjects. We
will also explore the theory of “response expectation” and the “emotion/reason equilibrium”. This provides some
understanding of why difficult people act as they do in conflict.

It is not unusual for nonprofit organizations to, at some point, consider re-branding. This can range from a new logo
and website all the way to changing the name, values and mission of an organization. The process of exploring and
implementing a re-brand is always challenging and usually clouded in mystery. In this workshop you will learn from
the experiences of others, be introduced to leading practices and resources and leave with a clearer understanding of
what it means to re-brand an organization. We will translate the complicated world of organizational branding and
provide a nonprofit perspective on the subject.

fine folks in the nonprofit/voluntary sector experience the effects of gossip and negativity. This workshop is all about
ending the garbage of your communication at work (and the skills apply to the rest of life). Through active learning
experiences, you will get just how powerful conversations are and see how to shift your conversations, so you are
creating positive energy instead of indulging the usual “trauma sharing” and destructive conversations. Once the
filtration system is put in place, you’ll experience how to alter “the network of conversations” of your life. Whether

6C accountability in an age of entitlement: the Power

tHeMe: Recharge
sPeaKeR: David Irvine
With everyone talking about the need for more accountability in the work place, why is accountability so likely to
turn people off? Why is it that unearned entitlement remains so prevalent, both in the workplace and in society? You
have to get to the deep meaning and application of accountability. If you don’t, it becomes a hammer to blame and
punish people, or at best, just another organizational buzzword. David’s proven and practical philosophy and
approach to accountability helps leaders build trust, respect and integrity. It reveals how to banish blame and fear,
transform entitlement into ownership, close the gap between intention and success and get a grip on results. Take
this opportunity to step back and gain a new and positive perspective on accountability.

a close look at strategies a target can use to confront the workplace bully and a discussion of why, in many cases,
the target may choose not to confront the bully. The workshop will conclude with a detailed strategy of what a
person can do when they are the target or victim of the workplace bully. We will outline specific steps to take that
will force the bully to account for his/her actions and ultimately address the behaviour.

life and educating people about health, happiness, life balance and success. Over that time she has identified
commonalities among the high-performers she’s met, interviewed and coached: energy habits that make them
standout in everything they do. High-performers exist at every level in every organization, even among volunteers.
What are you doing to tap into your team and recharge their power? It’s in the habits.
• What do high-performers say about self-care, and what do they believe is the number one non-negotiable
high-performance health practice you need to embrace?
• Which morning ritual will set you up for high-performance success like no other?
• What do high-performers say is the ultimate key to time-management and focus?
• How can you integrate these habits into your work and life to become a truly high-performing volunteer?
Sharing lessons from her first book Energy Now! Small Steps to an Energetic Life along with research from her
pending second book, this workshop will help you and your team identify and integrate proven energy habits
embraced by high-performers from every profession and walk-of-life, including volunteers. Warning, this workshop
