April 30—XC run at Puntledge Park 2015 Cumberland Community School Grade 4-7 Spelling Bee Winners House Competitions are Back! We have reintroduced our historic House Competitions which began in 1994 with two houses in the Junior School. Now, we have four houses: Blue Orcas, Yellow Cougars, Green Bears and Red Wolves. Our first competition was a balloon stuffing contest (K-9). The second competition was human bowling (Gr 6-9). A special thank you to Mrs. Taylor and her grade 9 leadership students for organizing these fun events for our students. Fitness Room Open! 2015 District #71 Spelling Bee We are opening our fitness room after school hours on Mondays, Wednesdays (non PLC days) and Fridays from 3 to 3:30 (grades 6 to 9 only). Thank you to Mr. Nelson for offering your assistance with this. Robotics Lessons Grades 4 and 5 New Staff: We have a couple of staff changes this New Year. Mr. Nelson started in January teaching a grade 6/7 class replacing Mrs. Collins. Mr. Copes is returning to work March 17 as our elementary counselor. Welcome back, Mike! Mrs. Klassen will continue as our junior age level counselor and will be teaching half time in a grade 6/7 class. We say good bye and good luck to Mrs. Moore who has been a wonderful addition to our staff and has been with us since September. Mother Goose & Friends is coming to Cumberland StrongStart every Thursday starting April 23rd to June 11 at 9:45 AM for children aged birth to 5 years. * An 8 week session Promote a healthy bond between you and your child. * Have fun learning songs, rhymes and stories to share with your child. * Stimulate your child's early literacy development. * Meet local families and build your community connections! Space is limited, so preference is given to Cumberland families first. Thanks! GRADE 4 TO 7 SCHOOL SPELLING BEE We had our first school spelling bee in many years this February. Our top 3 spellers were: Zeke deVitre, Robert Graham and Natalie Prowse. All three spellers went to the district spelling bee and proudly represented our school. Natalie Prowse came in second in School District #71 that day. Congratulations to all students that participated in our school spelling bee. Program runs mid-April to May for students in grades K-6. Both paid and volunteer positions available. Elevating Rhythms– A Carnival Style Percussion Band Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday 7:15– 8:45 PM. Open to all ages– children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. No charge, but please register in advance. Every spring we offer BMX Club- a fun and non-competitive after-school program for students in grades K- 6. Bikes and helmets are available for students who don't have their own. This program is run by volunteers and we need your help! We are looking for individuals with first aid certification to attend each session. Program runs Wednesdays starting April 22nd. Supervision will not be provided. THUNDERBALLS 2015 Monday May 18th at 9:30 AM prior to the Empire Days Parade This year’s event features a new and improved ramp with up to 4000 golf balls rolling down Dunsmuir Avenue! Over 20 prizes worth $50 or more to be won. Come and enjoy the spectacle and stay for the always amazing Empire Days Parade. Tickets on sale mid-March. The 7th ANNUAL HUGE GARAGE SALE wants your spring cleaning treasurers! The garage sale will be hosted by CCSS and PAC on Sunday May 31st from 9 AM– 3 PM. Cumberland Community Schools Society (CCSS), in partnership with the Cumberland Community School and School District No. 71, is opening a Youth Centre. The CCSS Youth Centre is located in the Annex Building within the Cumberland Community School campus. The Centre will be open: Mondays 2:45 to 4:15 PM Thursdays 2:45 to 8:00 PM Fridays 2:45 to 8:00 PM For the first month or two, the Centre will be open to youth aged 11- 15. Once routines have been established, youth aged 16-18 will also be invited to attend. Youth wishing to attend the Youth Centre are required to complete a Membership Form and pay a $5 annual fee. The form must also be signed by a parent/guardian. Forms will be sent home with students and available at Centre . YOUTH PROGRAMS Youth Council Open to all students in grades 6 to 9 Next meetings: Friday March 20thand Friday April 24th in the Youth Centre. This group meets once a month and is the advisory committee for the Cumberland Youth Centre. Cumberland Mountain Film Festival: Cumberland Skatepark Fundraiser Open to all students in grades 6 to 9 Thursdays until March 26th 2:45 – 3:45 PM in room 162 (Mr. Curtin’s room) Watch, judge and find videos for this year’s Cumberland Mountain Film Festival. Volunteers needed for the Cumberland Mountain Film Festival Looking for youth and adults, of all ages, to volunteer on the day of the event (Friday April 10th for 2 hr shifts between 4:00 – 10:00 PM) at the Cumberland Cultural Centre.
