Curry Senior Center’s Annual Gala
Thursday, May 7, 2015
Aging with health, hope and dig nity
1 – Helping Hands, Healing Hearts
California Pacific Medical Center
Congratulates Curry Senior Center
on its proud past and Bright future of providing Excellent
service to our seniors.
Thank you for joining us tonight at Curry’s annual gala: Helping Hands,
Healing Hearts!
Welcome to both our new friends and long-time supporters as we recognize
leadership in our community while raising much-needed funds for seniors
living in the Heart of San Francisco. Tonight we honor three leaders whose efforts
have impacted and benefitted all of San Francisco, the residents of the Tenderloin and
the participants in the programs at Curry Senior Center.
We acknowledge the Founding President of Curry’s own Professionals,
Advocates and Leadership Society (Curry PALS), Aisha Ahmad, with the
Joseph Mignola Jr. Award. Aisha’s inspiring efforts have created a new breed of
advocates and leaders benefitting elderly San Franciscans.
We also acknowledge with the Dr. Francis J. Curry Award long-time neighborhood
partner Saint Francis Memorial Hospital and the Saint Francis Foundation,
under the leadership of Abbie Yant and Kevin Causey, for their year-long effort creating
real change in the Heart of San Francisco with the Tenderloin Health Improvement
Project — THIP!
Tonight we unveil the inaugural year of the Vera Haile Dalenberg Award named
after advocate extraordinaire and the former Executive Director of Curry Senior
Center. Vera was a rare breed, a lifelong advocate, not just for her own agency or
programs but for all immigrants, seniors and low-income people. The first year of this
award will honor another lifelong advocate, Marie Jobling, Executive Director
of the Community Living Campaign. This award will continue annually to honor
women in our community who advocate and dedicate their lives to helping those who
need a hand up in our community.
In that spirit, tonight’s overall theme is to honor women who smash that
glass ceiling on their way to bringing sustainable and high impact change
on behalf of all causes that need a champion in our community. Please
take special note to see our sponsors’ tributes on the screen and read the
program ads recognizing these s-heroes.
Thank you for joining us tonight in celebration. And thank you for your support of
the seniors, who helped build the great city of San Francisco that we all enjoy today.
David Knego

Curry Senior Center’s Annual Gala – 4
Please Welcome Tonight’s
Special VIP Guests:
Mirian and Orlando Cepeda
Orlando Cepeda, who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999, is
recognized nationally for his humanitarian efforts as an ambassador for baseball and
the San Francisco Giants. He begins his 17th season as a community representative
for the team and is a member of the Giants Community Fund Advisory Board.
In his current role, the “Baby Bull” visits inner-city schools in the Bay Area and
throughout the United States, speaking to “at-risk” children about the dangers of
drugs and alcohol. The 68-year-old Ponce, P.R. native also serves as the honorary
spokesman for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America.
A lifetime .297 hitter with 379 home runs and 1,364 RBI during his 17-year playing
career with the Giants, Cardinals, Braves, A’s, Red Sox and Royals, Cepeda hit a
home run against the Dodgers in his very first Major League game April 15, 1958.
He went on to win 1958 Rookie of the Year honors, the 1966 Comeback Player
of the Year award, the 1967 NL Most Valuable Player trophy and 1973 Designated
Hitter of the Year laurels. He appeared in three World Series, was a six-time All-Star
and hit over .300 nine times in his career.
On July 25, 1999, Cepeda was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame during
ceremonies in Cooperstown, NY. He became only the second Puerto Rico native
to enter the Hall, joining the late Roberto Clemente. Two weeks earlier on July 11,
1999, Cepeda had his uniform No. 30 retired by the Giants during ceremonies at
Candlestick Park. As one of the 10 players in the Giants’ 123-year history to have
their jersey number retired, he joins Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal and
Gaylord Perry as the only five San Francisco players to receive such an honor.
In 1993, the Baby Bull was also inducted into the Puerto Rico Sports Hall of Fame,
while in 1999, he was elected to the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame for his great
years with the St. Louis Cardinals which followed his tenure with the Giants. In
2004, he was one of four men to receive the Major League Baseball Players Alumni
Association’s Achievement Awards, the MLBPAA’s highest alumni honor. He was
joined by Jim Bunning, Al Kaline and the late Roger Maris.
Orlando and his wife, Mirian, reside in Fairfield. They have four sons — Orlando, Jr.,
Hector, Malcolm and Ali Manuel.

Tonight’s Entertainment
Gaucho: gypsy jazz during the reception and dinner and after the
presentation of awards
Gaucho, a gypsy jazz sextet, was formed in 2002. On occasion, guest artists bring
their own spice to the mix. While they base much of their repertoire in the music of
Django Reinhart and the gypsy jazz of 1930’s Europe, they also find inspiration in
the rhythmic drive and collective improvisation of New Orleans swing music and the
“gut bucket” sound. Gaucho is a first-rate ensemble, playing the music they love with
boundless energy, passion, and humor.
Tonight’s trio performance presents Dave Ricketts (Guitar/cornet/vocals), Ari Munkres
(Bass), and Craig Ventresco (Guitar).
Gaucho Weekly Gigs:
• Mondays: 8–11pm, Comstock Saloon — North Beach
• Wednesdays: 8pm, Amnesia — Mission
• Thursdays: 7–10pm, Cafe Barrone — Menlo Park
• Sundays: 5–8pm, Brenda’s French Soul Food — Tenderloin
Joy Graham-Korst: A Cappella Magnus Opus
Joy Graham-Korst just completed her 28th season with the San Francisco Opera
Chorus. Prior to San Francisco, she performed with the Lyric Opera of Chicago and
received additional training through their young artist program. Joy also did three
“bus and truck” tours with New York City Opera National Company.
Joy has sung with other Bay Area opera companies, The Bracebridge Dinner at
Yosemite and Sing for America.
She holds a BA in Voice Performance from North Park College and Theological
Seminary, now known as North Park University, in Chicago, IL.
Jeffrey Korst: Magic in the Lobby Terrace during the reception
Jeffrey Korst has been performing magic for over 30 years at private parties — as
well as in nightclubs, restaurants, hotels and review shows.
Magic had always interested him, but not the trick deck, plastic box type to which
he had access as a boy. Then, he found a book on sleight of hand. Immediately, he
became obsessed. Four years later, he was working as a full time magician.
Jeffrey loved performing in ice shows — on skates — at state fairs, hotels, even a
cruise ship! But the deeper mystery was how magic affected the rest of his life. That
secret is revealed at every show.
Now, he’s busy creating new material and performing at a variety of special events.
Contact him today and together you’ll make your next event the one your guests will
always remember!

13 – Helping Hands, Healing Hearts
87-year-old Frank Hathaway Winston, who told his story
last year, is here tonight and continues to be in his safe home
overlooking the Bay.
Diane Evans told her story in 2013 about how Curry is
her first permanent home since she escaped from Hurricane
Katrina. She introduces Ira Watkins tonight.
Raise the Paddle for Homeless Seniors: Goal $12,000
You have made it happen the last two years and raised over $8,000 each
gala to provide homes and avoid terrifying evictions for dozens of seniors.
This year, Twitter
has become a primary partner to Curry and wants
to challenge you to raise your paddles 50% more than in 2013 and 2014. If
you can get us to $12,000 with this effort this evening, Twitter will top it off
with an additional $5,000!
Imagine one of your grandparents or elder relatives afraid and homeless on the scary
streets of the inner City — alone, cold, not knowing when their next meal will be or
if they will be able to afford to pay for their medications, with no one to turn to for
help, much less to give a kind word.
That is the plight of hundreds of seniors in San Francisco each day. 15,000 low
income seniors live in the heart of the city and 10% are homeless. And 50% of those
who make it through the front doors at Curry and to our case managers are at risk of
losing their homes on top of it.
While Curry has 13 apartments for seniors in its own building on Turk Street,
significant funding is needed to identify and secure a safe home for the many more
that need sanctuary, at the relatively modest cost of approximately $1,000 each.
Curry Senior Center’s Annual Gala – 14
Please raise those paddles high and let us take advantage of
the Twitter challenge!
Ira Watkins, whose art some of you bid on in the Silent Auction tonight, remains living in his van after three
years. Please hear his story tonight and feel great knowing that housing him is of highest priority and by next
year he should be sleeping safely in his new permanent home because of you.
The Joseph Mignola, Jr. Award 2015 Honoree
Aisha Ahmad
The Joseph Mignola, Jr. Award is given annually by Curry
Senior Center to honor an individual or group who devote
their energy, intelligence and heart to helping individuals in
our community as Mr. Mignola did throughout his lifetime.
Joseph Mignola, Jr., a 3rd generation San Franciscan, whose
parents survived the earthquake of 1906, grew up in the
Sunset District.
Joseph Mignola, Jr.
During WWII Joe served as an Army Lieutenant in
Intelligence stationed at Radio Tokyo after the Treaty
was signed.
For 41 years he served the city and county of San Francisco. Beyond Joe’s employment
within city government, he also served as a board member for many organizations
including San Francisco Lighthouse for the Blind, the Italian Welfare Agency (of
which he was Secretary), the San Francisco Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Senior
Resources Board, the Episcopal Sanctuary, the Coalition on Homelessness and the
San Francisco Redevelopment Agency.
For one year Joe operated as the Director of Laguna Honda Hospital, an appointment
that ultimately helped him gain the position of Deputy Director of Public Health for
Hospital Services. He held this title for 21 years, retiring in 1985.
It was in retirement that Joe became Board President of the North of Market Senior
Services and North and South of Market Adult Day Health alongside Dr. Francis J. Curry.
His wife, Rae Mignola who shares Joe’s dedication for civic participation, continues
to be active in the San Francisco community and has this to say of him: “Joe was very
much involved in his work, and had tremendous respect for those great people he
worked with. The list is very long.”
Aisha Ahmad, recently accepting a position on the Curry Board of Directors, is
being honored for her critical leadership as the Founding President of the Curry
PALS (Professionals, Advocates and Leadership Society) and her leadership with the
Association of Auxiliaries for Children that raises funds for Stanford Children’s Health.
The Curry PALS Mission: Promoting professional networking and social
connections through service and fundraising for the 15,000 underserved
and homeless seniors in the heart of San Francisco
The Curry PALS recognize that the population served by Curry is one of the most
isolated, underserved and vulnerable and through unique, meaningful service projects
and events, they share their collective voice and energy to promote awareness and
inspire our community to advocate for action that ensures independence, health,
hope and dignity for our forbearers in the heart of the City.
Through this important work they enhance their leadership and develop a network
with like-minded individuals who elevate the quality of life for each other as well as
for San Francisco as a whole.
Curry Senior Center’s Annual Gala – 16
The Dr. Francis J. Curry Award 2015 Honorees
Saint Francis Foundation & Saint Francis Memorial Hospital
Dr. Francis J. Curry
The Dr. Francis J. Curry Award was
established in 1993 to honor the
former Director of the Department of
Public Health. Dr. Curry participated
in the founding of Curry Senior
Center, arranged for the City of San
Francisco to purchase the 333 Turk
Street building, and served with
distinction on the Board of Directors
upon his retirement.
The Curry Award is given:
• In recognition of leadership and service to the community in the field of health
and social care, particularly of senior residents.
• In recognition of expertise and foresight in supporting public and private policy to
enhance and protect the physical and mental health of the community at large.
• In recognition of setting an example by following the model of Francis J. Curry in
flexibility to change, tact and skill in human and humane relationships, inventiveness
and ingenuity in marshaling resources and persistence in pursuing goals.
Saint Francis Foundation and Saint Francis Memorial Hospital are being
honored for their leadership in developing a community vision into a reality with the
Tenderloin Health Improvement Partnership (Tenderloin HIP).
Over the course of one year — 2014 — Tenderloin HIP initiated a robust community
stakeholder process which identified the priorities of safety, community connectedness
and opportunities to make health choices as instrumental to realizing the vision of
health and well-being for the Tenderloin.
Using a collective impact model and a place-based strategy, a four block area was
identified that was ripe with opportunity to be tipping points to improved health.
Through the leadership of Kevin Causey of the Saint Francis Foundation and Abbie
Yant of Saint Francis Memorial Hospital, Tenderloin HIP was able to garner the
support of additional community investors culminating in a $1 million pool of
funding which supported:
• The reopening of Boeddeker Park
• The expansion of Tenderloin Safe Passage
• Investment with the Boys and Girls Clubs to lead the new collaborative
partnership at Boeddeker Park
• Tenderloin Economic Development Project (TEDP) to stabilize and support local
merchants and businesses
• Support of the Green Mobile Health Education Program

The Vera Haile Dalenberg Award
Vera Haile Dalenberg of San Francisco, California,
died on July 9, 2014 at Kaiser Hospital, surrounded
by friends and family at the time of her passing.
Born September 20, 1934, she was a native of
Knoxville, Tennessee, the only child of Frank and
Vera Haile.
She moved to San Francisco after graduating from
Antioch College in Ohio and earned her Master of
Social Welfare degree from UC Berkeley.
Vera Haile was Executive Director from
1983–1996; pictured here with founder and
namesake, Dr. Francis J. Curry
On July 3, 1973, she married Ananda Claude
Dalenberg. She is survived by twin daughters Laura
Dalenberg and Diane Dalenberg Schoonover.
Vera was a lifelong advocate who challenged the City to do its very best for immigrants,
seniors, and all low-income or underserved people. She began her long and notable career
in social service at San Francisco’s Department of Social Services, then went to Self-Help
for the Elderly in San Francisco’s Chinatown and then served as the Executive Director
of North of Market Senior Services (now the Curry Senior Center) from 1983–1996,
where she helped develop a number of innovative neighborhood-based programs.
Retirement only brought more opportunities for leadership. She served on the
Aging and Adult Services Commission, the Advisory Council to the Aging and Adult
Services Department, the Mayor’s Long Term Care Coordinating Council, co-chair
of the San Francisco In-Home Supportive Services Task Force, founding board
member of the Community Living Campaign, and has been active with the Coalition
of Agencies Serving the Elders and Senior & Disability Action. She served on the
Commission for Immigrant Rights since its beginning and was considered to be the
Commission’s oral historian and expert. Vera was also a member of the Oversight
Committee for implementation of the Strategy for Excellence in Dementia Care, the
first and still only City/County plan for Alzheimer’s in the country.
Earlier this year, Mercy Housing California and the St. Anthony Foundation broke
ground on Vera Haile Senior Housing, located at 121 Golden Gate Avenue in
San Francisco’s Tenderloin. Named in her honor, the Residence is a new 10-story
apartment community featuring 90 affordable rental apartment homes for lowincome seniors. The building is also the location of the St. Anthony Dining Room,
Social Work Center and Free Clothing Program.
One of Vera’s favorite jazz songs was John Coltrane’s “Favorite Things.” Some of her
favorite things included: sunny days and warm weather, socializing with her friends
and family, music, movies, traveling, cruises, yoga, cashmere sweaters, museums,
street fairs, dance festivals, thrift store shopping, quilts, fragrant flowers, swimming
in warm water, companionship from her dog, exploring diverse cultures, history,
family trees, visiting little towns, listening to jazz at Simple Pleasures, bright colors,
artifacts from India, Africa and Asia, working on her autobiography, spending time
at her weekend home in Sonoma, watching sf.gov TV and of course she was very
involved in politics and was an activist for many issues close to her heart. She also
enjoyed extra sour sourdough bread, cheese, fresh fruit, picking blackberries, extra
strong coffee, dark chocolate and cheesy grits.

The Vera Haile Dalenberg Award 2015 Honoree
Marie Jobling
The Vera Haile Dalenberg Award is new to Curry
and founded in memory of Vera Haile — a San
Francisco icon of determined advocacy for the
underprivileged and Curry Executive Director from
1983–1996 who was responsible for the dramatic
growth in Curry’s comprehensive programming and
partnerships during her term.
This award will be presented annually at Helping
Hands, Healing Hearts to a woman or group of
women in our community who fight for what makes
our city famous for benevolence and goodwill
towards those who need a supportive hand.
In honor of this inaugural year of the award, Helping Hands, Healing
Hearts tonight honors all women who fight for the change we want to see in
our communities.
Please see the following pages of our sponsors’ tributes to many other
women who model Vera’s determined advocacy.
We are elated that the inaugural recipient of the Vera Haile Dalenberg Award is
longtime advocate Marie Jobling, current Executive Director of the Community
Living Campaign in San Francisco. Marie has many years of experience in long-term
care public policy, planning and advocacy. She has led the CLC team in developing
several large Community Forums and Summits in San Francisco on topics such as
Elder Economic Security, Alzheimer’s and Dementia, Healthy Aging, and the 2012
Aging and Disability Technology Summit and she plays a leadership role with the
City’s efforts to expand Internet access and technology learning to seniors and people
with disabilities. And she learned much of what she knows by working with Vera
Haile as she led efforts to improve the In-Home Supportive Services program and
many other program development and advocacy efforts over the years.
She is an active member of San Francisco’s Long Term Care Coordinating Council.
Marie was Executive Director of Planning for Elders in the Central City (PECC) for
14 years. Past positions also include Director of Parish and Community Services for
Catholic Charities of San Francisco, the Boards of TURN and the California Public
Interest Center on Long Term Care and planning and board leadership to a number
of affordable, low-income housing developments. Marie received a B.S. in Applied
Behavioral Sciences from the University of California, Davis a very long time ago.
She has three great kids — Amy, Joe, and Rebecca and a most supportive husband,
Tony Fazio.
