Canning Vale College Visual Art Extension Program

Canning Vale College
Visual Art Extension Program
About the Program
The Canning Vale College Visual Arts Extension Program is a school based
specialist program designed to support and extend students talented in the
Visual Arts. In this program students are introduced to a range of art
techniques and opportunities that are not available in regular art
class. Students learn to develop and extend their skills in practical art making
through a range of traditional and contemporary techniques.
Students are given the opportunity to enter their artwork into some of the
States most recognised high school art competitions as well as many local
community exhibitions. Students visit different exhibitions in Perth, to see
Australian and International Artists’ work. The program gives students the
opportunity to work with local practicing artists, to give them insight as to how
artists plan, create and display their artwork in the real world.
Art Classes
The extension program is delivered in two parts. Students have
two sessions during regular college times and one session after
school on a Wednesday from 3.15-4.45pm. After school sessions
are tutored by professional local artists.

This provides an opportunity for students to immerse themselves
in practical activities requiring studio specialisation. It also
provides students with opportunities to work with experienced
artists and expert instruction, which enable extension and a depth
of study to be undertaken.

Selection Process
All applicants will be invited to attend the aptitude test. The aptitude
tests and assessment of visual arts skills will involve a session of
structured art making and art interpretation activities. This enables
applicants to demonstrate their creative skills and abilities within a safe
and supportive group environment. Based on these tests, students will
then be contacted for portfolio interview with their parent. Students will
need to bring a portfolio of their best artwork to be reviewed.
Thereafter, successful applicants will be contacted.

Past Achievements
Last year was a big year for The Arts at CVC. We successfully entered a
multitude of competitions and community events showing off our students’
artistic talents and achievements to the public. Students work was
exhibited in events such as Hyper Vision, Darlington, The Young Originals
to name a few. One talented student’s work will be on permanent display
as part of the children’s ward in the new Fiona Stanley Hospital, quite an
achievement!

Earlier last year students were part of an Urban Art Workshop.
They collaborated with a
professional urban artist and learnt spray painting techniques. Students designed and painted a
large scale sport themed mural on the back of the school gym, a lot of hard work and an excellent
result! Students were acknowledged for their urban artwork in the local newspaper.
Art Extension students were then commissioned to design and paint a mural for the local Goodstart
Early Learning Centre on Bateman Road. This was a massive commendation and achievement for all
students involved, and the result significantly impressed the staff and children of the day care
centre.
Each year we look forward to engaging students in the very best of art opportunities and
experiences. This program is designed to support young artists to grow and develop their own
artistic abilities and creative thinking.
