Citrus Valley Cross Country 2015

Citrus Valley Cross Country 2015
Introduction:
Welcome to the 2015 Cross Country Season. This will be our second year in the Citrus Belt League.
Last year we performed well for our first season, but this season we want to step it up even further.
In order to be competitive, we need every runner to make a serious commitment to practice from the
beginning of the year. In the past when runners have joined late, they have not performed well and
often end up getting hurt. Therefore, all runners must attend practice during the summer. For
those new to the school, an exception will be made allowing them to join during the first week of
school. However, those who join at this point will not be allowed to run in races until they have had
six weeks of training with the team.
Clearance Cards:
Before coming to practice, every athlete has to have a current physical and clearance card on file in
the athletic office and the coach must have a copy. There are no exceptions to this rule. Therefore
each athlete needs to confirm that they have a physical done ahead of time or they will not be allowed
to join the team.
Summer Practice:
Practice begins on Saturday June 13, at 7:00 am. We will meet at the Track. We will practice for
one week through Saturday June 20 (practice schedule is attached). Then we will take our CIF
mandated, three week dead period and start back up again on Monday July 13. All practice times
and locations will be posted on the website (http://cvhscrosscountry.com/). Practice start and end
times will be adhered to strictly. It is important that every runner is at practice early so that we can
start on time and therefore end on time.
In order to be ready for the first day of practice on June 13, everyone needs to be doing some
running. The suggestion is to take one week completely off of running after their persona track
season has ended. Then everyone should be running for at least 30 minutes 3-4 time per week. This
will be enough to keep the runner in decent shape as we start more serious training.
It is expected that the runners will stay in shape over the dead period. The coaches are not allowed
to set up practices or run with the runners during this time. However, the runners are welcome to get
together with their teammates to run. After returning from the dead period on July 13 it is expected
that JV runners are able to run approximately 25-30 miles per week. Varsity runners should be ready
to run 40-45 miles per week. We will then gradually increase the mileage during July and August.
JV and Varsity Teams:
During the initial week of summer practice (June 13-20) the coaches will be evaluating the runners to
determine who will start training with the Varsity and JV teams. Runners can move between the JV
and Varsity team throughout the year as determined by the coaching staff. The runners will be told
by June 20 which team they will train with starting on July 13.
Races:
The tentative race schedule is attached. It is expected that every runner will attend each practice and
each race. If an athlete is injured and unable to run the race, they can come and cheer on their
teammates and help the coaches. The CIF races at the end of the season are only for the runners
who are on the varsity team at the end of the season. We must qualify for each of the CIF races
based on the performance from the week before.
Fundraising:
The Booster Club will talk about opportunities in fundraising.
Parent Volunteers:
The more parent involvement with the team, the more successful the season will be. We need parents
to help out as drivers (must be cleared through the office) and we need parents to help at practice. The
practice help is simple but crucial. We simply need parents who will stand in designated areas to help
guide the runners in the correct direction (avoiding lost runners) and hand out water when it is hot.

Summer Camp 2015
July 26-August 1
Summer Camp will be here soon. We need to get a final tally on what days each athlete will be at
summer camp so that we can purchase food & supplies for the trip.
The expected cost of the Summer Camp Trip will be $300. That number includes the cost of lodging,
meals and other expenditures (gas, trail head parking permits, etc.)
Runners who are going for a shorter time up in Big Bear need to fill out the expected cost with the
guide below to determine their total cost. The “per night” cost is $35 plus $5 per meal. If 50% or
more of an individual’s camp fee is paid by the first day of practice (June 13) a 10% discount will be
given.
All payments will be made to the “CVHS Running Boosters.” A representative will be at practice on
June 13 and other designated times to collect payment. Runners may not pay at the finance office as
the trip is being funded through the Booster Club.
If you have any food restrictions (vegetarian, lactose intolerant, allergies, etc.) please write them on
the back of this form.

Citrus Valley Cross Country Camp
July 26 – August 1, 2015
Big Bear, CA
Camp Eligibility:
In order to be eligible to attend camp this year, the runners have to attend all summer practices
(beginning with the June 13 practice). If a runner has family obligations which prevent them from
attending any practice session, they need to see one of the coaches ahead of time and work out a
training schedule while gone. They must then report this to the coach.
Paperwork:
In order to attend the camp, all athletes must have the following turned in:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Current Athletic Clearance Packet
Permission slip
RUSD Transportation form
Camp paid in full
Departure:
July 26, 1:30 pm – Meet in the stadium parking lot. All athletes should arrive at the stadium lot at
1:30 pm sharp with all of their supplies ready to load up so that we can depart as soon as possible.
We will be transporting the athletes with RUSD vans and personal vehicles of cleared drivers.
Return:
We will plan on departing Big Bear at approximately 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 1. We should
arrive at the school at approximately 3:00 pm. Since the checkout procedure is unpredictable, we will
have each athlete call or text updates to the parents if the times will be different.
Parent Help:
Meals - The Booster Club is preparing the meals. Any parents who would like to come up to Big Bear
and help out at one or more meals should contact the Booster Club.
Drivers – We will need lots of parent help with driving for camp this year. If you are going to transport
runners, you will need to have a clearance through the school. If we do not have enough parent
volunteer drivers, we will have to limit the number of runners who can come to camp. We need
drivers for the following:
1. Drive Runners to and from camp.
2. Drive Runners to and from the various trail heads. Ideally the driver would have a vehicle
that can drive on trails (i.e. SUV)
3. Drive supplies to and from camp
What to bring:
-
Clothes for 7 days and 6 nights
Running gear (don’t forget your shoes)
Toiletries
Sleeping bag and pillow
Spending money (please limit the amount!!)
Medication (You must inform the coaching staff of any medication, as the coaches will
hold onto the medication during the camp time)
Optional: Reading material, Movies, Board games, Video Games and systems
Basic Camp Rules:
-
We will be staying in residential areas. The athletes are expected to treat the property with
respect and to keep the noise reasonable.
Athletes must obey all rules put forth by the coaches or the parents will be called and asked to
come and pick up their athlete.
Sleeping arrangements: The boys and the girls will have separate cabins. There will be a
coach/counselor in each cabin.
Cleaning Duty: Each athlete will be put into a group and be asked to help clean up after
designated meals.
Showers: There will be showers available at each cabin. The coach/counselor in each cabin
will set the shower rotation.
Scoring a cross country race
-
Low score wins.
In a varsity race typically there are 7 runners (J.V. is typically unlimited, invitationals vary).
Only the top 5 runners score, however the #6 and #7 runners on your team can push up the
score of the opposing teams if finishing before any of the top 5 runners on this opposing team.
The lowest score possible is 15. This would require your team to have the first 5 runners finish
1,2,3,4,5.
Sample #1 (assuming a varsity race – 7 runners per team)
Team A finishers: 1,3,5,6,8,12,16
Team B finishers: 2,4,10,17,19,20,21
Team C finishers: 7,9,11,13,14,15,18
Team A Score: 1+3+5+6+8=23 (1st place)
Team B Score: 2+4+10+17+19=52 (2nd place)
Team C Score: 7+9+11+13+14=54 (3rd place)
Note that team A had their #6 and #7 runner come in ahead of the #4 and #5 runners on team B. So
even though they didn’t score for team A, they increased the score for team B.
Sample #2
Team A finishers: 1,2,3,16,17,20,21
Team B finishers: 4,5,8,9,10,11,15
Team C finishers: 6,7,12,13,14,18,19
Team A Score: 1+2+3+16+17=39 (2nd place)
Team B Score: 4+5+8+9+10=36 (1st place)
Team C Score: 6+7+12+13+14=52 (3rd place)
Note that even though the top part of Team A was extremely strong, Team B won because they were
strong the whole way through and caused Team A to have large # 4 and #5 scores.
