Euthanasia Technician Classification: Hourly (nonexempt), full-time Reports to: Euthanasia Manager Supervises: None Function: Provides for the general care and comfort of all facility animals during the euthanasia process. This encompasses providing necessary humane handling, dignified treatment of remains, and responsibility for providing all animals with a humane and comfortable experience. Duties and Responsibilities : 1. Demonstrate knowledge in areas of animal behavior and ability to recognize animal body language. 2. Work independently and in a team setting with minimal supervision. 3. Identify problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. 4. Exhibit the use of logic and reasoning to identify the strength and weakness of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to productivity problems. 5. Be familiar with all industry standard equipment (i.e. ketch-pole, muzzles and cat nets). 6. Ensure proper information is promptly updated in database after each animal’s disposition. 7. Conduct medical and equipment supply inventory relevant to department duties. 8. Participate in movement of animals within the shelter. 9. Maintain accurate records of schedule Class II controlled drugs according to NAC of the Nevada State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and NRS of the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy. 10. Participate in growth development assignments, department cross training, rotation schedule and training in professionalism. 11. Demonstrate the ability to prioritize and effectively manage one’s own time in order to complete daily tasks. 12. Communicate effectively with staff, supervisors, managers, and veterinarians to expedite decisions that impact animal priority and shelter flow. 13. Assist with any other responsibilities as assigned by the Euthanasia Manager, Director of Operations, Assistant Director of Operations, Medical Director or Executive Director. 14. Ensure proper disposal methods of animal remains according to The Animal Foundation standards. 15. Ensure the updating of information and providing an outcome of all animals as they are euthanized in the computer database. 16. Clean and sterilize instruments, walls, doors, counters, cabinets, drawers, floors, sink, exam table, department area and maintains equipment. 17. Review all pertinent animal information before beginning the euthanasia process according to department procedures. 18. Maintains appropriate storage of kennel records and drugs logs. 19. Prepares cadavers for rabies verification as directed for animal control jurisdictions. Qualifications and Physical Demands: High School Diploma or G.E.D. required. Graduation from an accredited post-secondary veterinary nursing school as a technician or an assistant. Related qualifying experience may be substituted for nursing school, on a year for year basis. Has the ability to assure the practice of animal health/welfare according to policies and procedures of The Animal Foundation. Deals tactfully and effectively with staff, volunteers, and the general public. Communicates the English language effectively in oral and written form. Possesses knowledge of animal breeds and characteristics, animal health, nutrition, and their humane care. Must be able to obtain euthanasia technician credentials from the Nevada State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, and the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy within a reasonable time after being hired; and maintain such credentials thereafter. At its sole discretion, the Animal Foundation may defer license and certification requirements pending the employee’s completion of training and testing. Must have basic computer skills. Must be proficient in mathematics in order to calculate doses of injections. The employee is continuously exposed to animals, animal waste, potentially harmful cleaning chemicals, high noise and potentially hazardous conditions, including the risk of animal bites and occasionally working outdoors for extended periods of time during cold and extremely hot weather.
