Types of Wheels

CHOOSING A POTTER'S WHEEL
Types of Wheels
There are two basic categories of potter's wheels:
1. Electric "sit down" wheels which are variable speed wheels about 20"
high.
2. Kickwheels which are usually foot powered but can be motorized.
These are massive wheels weighing 200 - 300 pounds turned by the
momentum of a heavy 'flywheel'.
Electric Wheels
These are the most popular types of wheels because of their ease of
operation. With a slight touch of your foot, the wheelhead can turn from
0 to 250 RPM allowing the potter to concentrate on the piece rather
than the mechanics of the wheel.
In this category there are three basic methods of driving the wheelhead:
(1) Belt/pulley, (2) Gear box/direct drive, and (3) Cone/pulley. There are
also three basic methods of varying the speed of the wheelhead: (1)
Electronically with an SCR controller and DC motor, (2) Electrically with
a power transformer and DC motor, and (3) Mechanically with a cone
moving along a pulley with an AC motor.
Drive Systems
W
H
E
E
L
S
1. The belt/pulley uses a small pulley (approx. 11/2") on the motor shaft
connected to a large pulley (approx. 12") connected to the wheelhead
by means of a belt. Though capable of slipping, with the proper tension
they work well and are the most popular method of driving wheelheads.
Used by Brent, Soldner and Creative Industries.
2. The gear box/direct drive uses a gear box (like a small car
transmission—a series of various size gears) in direct contact with the
shaft of the wheelhead. This provides for no slippage but some power
is lost in the transmission and a little more care is required to check the
fluid level periodically.
3. The cone/pulley has a stainless steel cone mounted on the end of
an AC motor turning at one constant speed (for maximum torque). The
cone moves along a hard rubber pulley and the friction and varying
diameters of the cone provide the drive and the variable speed. Used
by Shimpo on the RK 10 models.
Variable Speed
The way in which a wheelhead achieves its variable speed (generally 0
to 250 RPM) from a motor that normally turns around 1800 RPM is the
major issue wheel manufacturers face when deciding to make wheels.
There are three basic ways.
1. Electronically with an SCR controller and a DC motor with the
necessary current adjusters. This provides moderately good torque at
all speeds but is weak at low speeds, especially when weighed down
with a maximum load of clay. This type is sometimes known to jerk at
low speeds with a maximum clay load. A noticeable hum is usually
present. A short stroke footpedal that moves about 2" or so is typical,
and this is a minor drawback—it is difficult to find a spot between
medium and fast without fine tuning with a micrometer. However,
overall, they are pretty reliable and trouble free.
2. Electrically with a magnetic transformer and a DC motor. This
eliminates many of the objectionable features of the SCR controller
such as hum, low speed jerking, and the short stroke footpedal.
Although the foot pedal is somewhat cumbersome, the four inch stroke
of the footpedal is extremely smooth.
3. Mechanically with a stainless steel cone mounted on the shaft of an
AC motor turning at constant speed for maximum torque. The footpedal
is connected to the base of the motor and, as the footpedal is moved,
the entire motor moves along rails engaging the cone against a hard
rubber pulley under the wheel head. This wheel usually starts in the 20
RPM range due to the mechanics of engaging the cone against the
pulley. The footpedal must be mounted to side of the wheel (to move
the motor) and more pressure must be exerted to push the motor into
contact with the pulley. A hand lever is usually provided for ease and
59
more control. The hand lever also helps if you're standing on a table
throwing five foot pots and trying to push the pedal. Some slippage is
possible as on a belt system, but the main feature is in the strength of
the torque provided by a constantly turning one speed motor.
Kickwheels
A kickwheel is a necessarily large wheel driven by the momentum of
the flywheel under the wheelhead. The flywheel is usually kicked,
hence, the name kickwheel. While most kickwheels are powered by
foot there has been a growing trend lately toward motorization mainly
to aid in the centering cycle.
The normal weight of a flywheel is about 100 pounds but can be as
high as 200 pounds. However, weight is only one consideration in
choosing a kickwheel. A rim weighted flywheel provides more
momentum that a core weighted flywheel of considerably greater
weight. On the other hand, if you have very short legs, a wide diameter
flywheel heavily rim weighted may be harder for you to kick than a
narrower diameter flywheel.
Motorized Kickwheels
There are two ways of motorizing a kickwheel that seem practical
today:
1. Flywheel driven uses a 1 speed motor (1/4 H.P. is more than
sufficient) with a small (3") hard rubber 'puck' mounted on the motor
shaft. The motor is hinged with a spring action so that as you pull the
motor against the flywheel (either on the top rim or outside edge of the
flywheel) the rubber puck turns the flywheel. This requires that the top
or rim of the flywheel be steel or steel-covered cement or the puck will
wear out or flatten out and not turn smoothly. This is probably the most
common way kickwheels are motorized.
Some motors are connected to microswitches which only go on when
you engage the motor and others have a switch near the work space,
meaning you either have to keep switching the motor on and off or
leave it running all the time.
2. Shaft driven requires a large rubber puck or small tire. This small tire
(about 8-10") is mounted on the shaft about halfway between the
wheelhead and the flywheel. The motor shaft rubs against the tire,
which then turns the flywheel. This method eliminates the problem of
uneven wear and slight bumpiness characteristic of flywheel driven
kickwheels not properly balanced or machined. These wheels usually
have a foot lever, not an on/off switch.
All About Motors
Horsepower ratings, like the wattage rating for amplifiers, are
somewhat misleading. Motor manufacturers rate motors according to
their standards, but wheel manufacturers rate their motors in terms of
the power produced at the wheelhead. This is valid from a mechanical
point of view because it takes into account the effect that the reduction
in the speed of the motor has on the work it will do.
For example, a 1/2 H.P. motor usually turns at 1750 RPM at the shaft
but when connected to a large pulley, say 12", the speed at the
wheelhead is reduced to 250 RPM. That reduction in speed also
represents an increase in power or torque similar to a lever. So a
properly reduced 1/2 H.P. motor is really doing the work of a 1 H.P.
motor not reduced in speed. Therefore the horsepower rating is only
one criteria when choosing a wheel. How much clay a wheel will center
without undue strain or slowing down is the more important
consideration.
All of the motors used by wheel manufacturers are virtually
maintenance free and are under warranty by the motor manufacturers
as well as the wheel manufacturers. Under normal conditions, the only
thing that may need changing are motor brushes (small pieces of
carbon which make contact with the rotor).
Changing brushes is relatively simple and only need to be replaced
every 5000 hours of use which comes out to 4 hours per day, 5 days
per week, for 5 years.

WHEELS
Creative Industries Model MP, HP
Creative Industries builds its potter’s wheels with an emphasis on ruggedness and long, reliable life. The 14” wheel head (standard on
both models) is manufactured from a 135/8 inch diameter steel plate which is welded to a 25 mm (.984”) steel shaft. This wheel head can
never come loose from its shaft. A reinforced engineering plastic is the injection-molded around the steel plate and over part of the steel
shaft as a bearing cover to ensure that clay or water can’t get to this component and damage it. Two large electric motor-quality bearings
support the shaft. The table top and legs are manufactured from an injection molded, reinforced engineering thermoplastic molded with
deep ribs for strength while being light in weight. Since the color is molded throughout the material, it cannot be scratched off and, of
course, plastic doesn’t rust. Amp variation depends on the user and the amount of clay placed on the wheel.
Advantages of a Creative Industries Wheel
• Smooth, soft electronic feel rather than the mechanical feel of
other wheels.
• Permanent magnet DC motors with exceptionally low vibration.
• Electronic filter system to eliminate motor hum for quieter,
“humless” operation.
• Sophisticated solid state electronic load sensing control which
maintains wheel head speed under changing loads.

Universal Bats
Plasti-bats
Universal bats from Creative Industries are strong, molded
plastic and ribbed on the underside to provide a smooth, level
work surface on top. Installs by simply placing on the bat pins
in your wheelhead. No bolts or wing nuts to screw. Fits
wheelheads with 9" and 10" center to center pins.

Plasti-bats are the longest lasting plastic bats available today.
They are virtually indestructible. Plasti-bats never wear out due
to continuous heavy usage. Soaking in water will not harm or
warp them. They will not splinter, delaminate, swell or shrink.
The bat pin holes remain just as drilled and will not become
oversized with use. They are textured on one side and smooth
on the other. Plasti-bat is a non absorbent, positive adherence
surface. Clay does not slide or turn loose while centering and
the totally clean, permanent surface is not irritating to your
hands. NOTE: If you are changing over from plaster or if you
keep your pieces plastic wrapped, we advise cutting your
pieces free from the bat as your last step in throwing.

specifically for trimming, it works equally well for waxing the
foot or banding with oxides. After a simple one-time adjustment,
the Giffin Grip quickly snaps on and off your wheel. It halves

• The Giffin Grip will cut your trimming time in half. It simply
snaps on the wheel and centers your pots in seconds.
• The Giffin Grip holds all shapes and sizes of pots. It is 151/2”
in diameter and will hold up to 14”.
• The Giffin Grip will not stick to the rim of your pots.
• Constructed of the finest materials available, the Giffin Grip
is built to last. It is designed to withstand years of continuous
studio use.
