SUNDAY SCHOOL #3
LETTER FROM
DERRY
DAM PROJECTS 2
Letter From Derry is a film and one-day exhibition that
took place on 22 February 2015, looking at culture and
contemporary art in Derry, curated by Daniella Rose
King.
The exhibition Donʼt Let The Truth Get In The Way Of
A Good Story featured artworks by London and Derry-based Ciarán Ó Dochartaigh, Mhairi Sutherland,
Abridged and assembled ephemera; including a 12” record by artist Locky Morris. The exhibition explored the
importance and interchangeability of truth, fiction and
storytelling in the construction of a place or an artwork.
Found materials and collected texts are interspersed
among works of art (and missing archives) as an act of
myth-making, and telling tales.
The documentary - Letter From Derry - shot in the city features interviews with artists, curators and more and footage of the city and its surrounding countryside.
DAM PROJECTS is a curatorial collective founded by
Daniella Rose King, Amanprit Sandhu and Morgan
Quaintance. Inclusive and anti-elitist, the collective use
temporary exhibitions and events to support emerging,
underexposed and unorthodox artists, art scenes, discourses and debates.
Sunday School consists of 12 one-day exhibitions running
from November 2014 – November 2015. F

BIOGRAPHIES
Ciarán Ó Dochartaigh (born Derry, Northern Ireland) is based in London and
Derry. He obtained an MFA at Goldsmiths College, London, 2010-2012 and was
awarded an AHRC Bursary. Ó Dochartaigh combines specific media to create
sculptural installations and objects or props. Pieces are often presented as a mixture of staged events and constructed video using artificial, staged environments,
set in varied rural / urbanscapes, often with accompanying written/spoken dialogue alongside, personable, yet reanimated anthropocentric objects. These appropriated objects are rendered new and redefined.
Recent selected shows include: ‘Concerning the Bodyguard’ at ‘The Tetley’, Leeds
that included a two-day public symposium. In 2012 he was invited to screen new
work at Chisenhale’s 21st Century program and participated in Young London
V22 London, 2012 and 2014. Selected upcoming shows include: Crooked Rain,
Crooked Rain, CCA Derry and Lismore Castle Arts (concurrently), Museum of
Contemporary Art of Santiago.
Mhairi Sutherland is a visual artist based in Derry/Londonderry. Originally from
Scotland, Sutherland was awarded a PhD in arts practice in 2012 from DIT in
Dublin for her thesis exploring issues of visibility, photography and conflict in
landscapes shaped by political forces. She is interested in collaborative approaches and site-specificity. Her work has been exhibited in one person shows in the
Regional Cultural Centre, Donegal (Arc of Fire, 2011) OMAC, Belfast (Fig: YS,
2008) Context Gallery, Derry (Fathom, 2002).
Abridged (born 2004, Derry, Northern Ireland) is a free tri-annual magazine
produced in Derry. Founded by Greg McCartney it commissions and publishes
contemporary/experimental poetry plus contemporary art. It encourages poets/
artists to investigate the articulation of ‘Abridged’ themes for example Time, Absence, Magnolia and Nostalgia. Abridged offers an alternative and complete
integration of poetry, art and design, while also experimenting with the exhibition
format by curating contemporary, innovative and challenging work accompanied
by a free publication.
