Required Materials:
 Algebra 1 Homework Practice Workbook. Available online through Mr. Ruiz‟s math course website.
 3-ring binder (with paper) or a spiral notebook designated solely for this course.
 Pencils and erasers
Calculators:
 Any type of calculator will not be permitted to be used in class or on tests, quizzes, or assignments.
Pre-requisite:
 Successful completion of Math 112 or Math 110 with a letter grade of „C‟ or higher, or appropriate score
on the LAHC math placement test.
Course Description:
This course gives a rapid review of basic arithmetic with a gradual introduction to the concepts of algebra,
including signed numbers, exponents, polynomials, equations, graphs, systems of equations, inequalities, and
quadratic equations. It contains applications of algebra to a wide variety of problems related to business and
other sciences
Los Angeles Harbor College Math Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of Elementary Algebra (Math 115) the student will be able to:
 Evaluate the expression using order of operations.
 Graph the linear equations.
 Solve linear equations.
 Multiply polynomials and factor polynomials.
 Solve quadratic equations using quadratic formula.

Attendance Policy:
 Please come to class on time and stay for the duration of the entire class session.
 If you cannot arrive to class regularly on time and/or stay for the duration of the class then please
consider taking this course at another time that fits your schedule.
 Any student arriving late or leaving early, without authorization from your instructor, will result in a loss
of participation points for this course.
 Every two-recorded late arrivals or early departure will count as a loss of 5 points towards your overall
grade in this course.
 You are responsible collecting notes from another student for any days you have missed.
Los Angeles Harbor College Drop Policy:
You (the student) are responsible for withdrawing (dropping) from any course through the Admissions &
Records office by the appropriate deadline. The deadline to drop a course is stated in the schedule of classes for
each semester. The Spring 2015 semester drop deadline is May 7th.
Academic Dishonesty (Cheating) Policy:
If you cheat in this class (i.e. knowingly or unknowingly participate in the submission of unoriginal work
for any assignment, quiz or test) the instructor is required to fill out an Academic Dishonesty Report
form. This report will be forwarded to the Math Dept. Chair, who will send it to the VP of Student
Services for disciplinary action, which may result in suspension or exclusion. In addition to sending this
report, you will receive an “F” in the course.

 This course is an „electronic device free‟ class. Please shut off all electronic devices that disrupt
classroom learning.
