Page Clay Bodies
More information: http://plainsmanclays.com
Plainsman clays are named with an L, M,
H or P prefix. This refers mainly to the
temperature in which they are primarily
(but not only) used, Low (Cone 04-2),
Medium (Cone 3-8) and High (Cone 811). The P refers to porcelain, and these
are available in middle and high temp
erature.
Terrastone/Buffstone
These are totally natural, fine ground, low
temperature school clays. Useful for wide
range of temperatures & applications.
Terrastone is a terracotta color, Buffstone
fires yellowish buff.
L215/L210
Low temperature terra-cotta bodies for
cone 04-02. L215 is a little sandier and
redder burning and incorporates talc to
better fit certain commercial glazes. L210
is less plastic and burns higher (suitable
as a brown stoneware (cone 2-4).
L211/L212/L213
Low fire light burning bodies. L212 fires
most mature, L213 fires whitest; both
contain talc to fit commercial glazes.
L211 has more texture and fires up to mid
temperatures. L213 dries best.
P300/M370
Mid temperature whitewares. P300 is our
traditional kaolin-only vitreous porcelain.
M370 burns whiter and is more plastic
but it is semi-vitreous to resist warping
during firing better.
M332/M332G
M332 is a medium brown buning plastic
sandy textured throwing body. Extra
care is necessary when drying it. M332G
has 20% minus 20 mesh grog added to
improve drying for hand building.
M340/M340GS/M340S
Smooth, strong, mature mid temperature
buff stoneware for small and mid size
functional ware. Very versatile, our most
popular clay. S versions contain manganese granular for fired speckle, they will
bloat if fired past cone 6 (cone 5 recommended). G version has 5% fine grog
added.
M325
A robust, fine grogged general purpose
mid-temperature yellow-buff burning
body with light texture. It fires darker than
M340.
M350/M390
Smooth and plastic mid temperature
throwing bodies. M390 burns brownish red and is a little more plastic. M350
is a mixture of M340 & M390. Both fire
strong and hard and are ground to 100
mesh.
H431/H435/H550/H450
Attractive high temperature buff classic
light burning speckled reduction bodies. H431 is the sandiest, most speckled
and darkest firing, H450 the finest and
least speckled. H550 is the most plastic,
the most mature, strongest and best for
functional ware, H431 is the least mature.
H450 is similar to H550 except it is a little
less vitreous (and thus fires with some
lighter grey variegation) and smoother.
Raku Throwing
A light firing plastic clay with 10% 35
mesh grog, 20% low expansion pyrophillite and 70% native stoneware.
H440/H443
Attractive high temperature classic dark
burning iron speckled reduction bodies.
H440 burns deep red-brown and is more
speckled, H443 fires greyer-brown. Both
stop short of complete maturity to retain
interesting colour. Vessels will not leak if
glaze is mature & fits the body.
H440G/H441G
Dark and light high temperature handbuilding bodies with 20% minus 20 mesh
grog. H440G burns to a lighter color
than H440. H441G fires white to buff is
more plastic. Both a heavily speckled in
reduction.
H555
High temperature plastic reduction func
tional white stoneware. This is a combined native/commercial body (roughly
the equivalent of a mix of H550 with
P580).
P580/H570
Reduction/oxidation whitewares. P580
is a traditional ball clay porcelain with
good workability and drying performance,
while still maintaining zero absorption for
functional ware. H570 is more plastic,
semi-vitreous, whiter burning and is more
stable in the kiln (because it does not fire
to zero porosity, or full vitrification).
P600/P700
P600 is a white firing, plastic, ball clayfree porcelain, it employs American
kaolins. P700 contains Grolleg kaolin so
it burns blue-white (vs. grey-white). Both
contain micro-fine bentonite which greatly
improves plasticity. P700 is more vitreous
and translucent.
WoodFire
A stoneware clay body formulated to
handle cone 12 and flash orange/brown
in woodfirings.
MSculp/Sculpture Clay
Coarsely grogged bodies, these differ
from our other grogged clays in that they
are based on a fine base clay that vitrifies very well at cone 10 (the others are
more refractory). In addition the added
aggregate complement consists of a
grog having only a narrow range of large
sizes and a silica sand having a narrow
range of intermediate sizes. The result
is a body that feels smooth, throws well,
remains fairly stable in the kiln and fires
with a lighter colored speckle imparted by
the grog particles. At cone 10 reduction
Sculpture clay fires dark brown with ligher
flecks, MSculp burns grey with lighter
flecks. Both can be used down to cone
6 as well to produce ware as strong as
traditional non-vitreous grogged bodies.
Plainsman Price List
Clay Body
Classifications
Plainsman produces some 30 or more
prepared clay bodies. Sample boards are
available which show fired samples of
each body at a variety of temperatures,
and in some cases, glazed samples. Our
clay bodies are classified in the following
ways:
Intended Temperature
This temperature may have been selected
for optimal strength or absorption, but it
may also be chosen for optimal whiteness, color development or as a compromise between maturity and stability in
the kiln, or between maturity and bloat
ing. This means that a particular body
may not be at its strongest, its whitest, its
most mature or its best color within its
firing range if that range was chosen to
satisfy other properties.
Fired Color
Within each temperature range there are
light, medium and dark colors.
Plasticity, Workability
Since more plasticity means more shrink
age, therefore poorer drying performance, different clays stress plasticity in
differing amounts. Some, like L212 for
example, are quite short and excel in drying, others are plastic and must be dried
with normal caution.
Native or Commercial
Most clays are made entirely from our
own native clays from our own quarries.
These bodies are the most consistent.
Other bodies are made entirely from
imported commercial materials and some
are made from a mixture of the two.
Texture
Some materials are very smooth, some
have a very slight grainy texture from
natural clay and shale content, some are
toothy because of added sand and some
are quite textured as a result of added
grog (ground fired brick).

Page Choosing a Firing Range
•Try to be as flexible as possible about
the firing range you choose, the lower
you can go the cheaper it will be.
Plainsman can assist you in recommending a temperature range and with
altering glaze formula's if necessary.
•Low temperature bodies (cone 06-04)
are not vitrified, they never will be at
this low temperature. Commercial
glazes melt at this temperature and
so clay manufacturers have provided
bodies on which to use them, but
all low temperature bodies have an
absorption in the plus 10% range. This
makes the range less than suitable for
functional ware because of water logging
& strength problems, but leaves plenty of
strength for decorative ware.
•Higher temperatures do not automatically
mean higher strength and better vitrifi
cation. A cone 2 body which is mature
can be as strong or stronger than a cone 12
body. Cone 6 oxidation is the ideal range
to work in to produce exceptionally strong
and durable ware.
Choosing a Clay Body
•Test a clay before you order a large
amount of it. If there are any minor
problems, like glaze fit, let us know
and we can provide solutions. For example, we might recommend a slight
change in your glaze recipes.
•High temperature iron bodies, which
are used for their warm brown and red
colours in reduction are not strong,
and are not vitrified, so technically,
they are not true stonewares. These
are generally in the range of 20003000 pounds per square inch tensile,
whereas a cone 6 functional ware body
can be 10,000. It is important to have
good glazes on these bodies if they are
to be used for functional ware, contact
Plainsman if you need assistance.
•Smooth bodies, especially porcelains,
are not well suited to heavy handbuilding.
•Plainsman porcelains stress plasticity as more important than colour and
flawless surface. Traditional translucent porcelains are cleaner, but they
are also much more difficult to work
with.
•Don't judge the stiffness of a clay by
poking your finger into a slug, it must
be wedged to loosen it up before a
reliable stiffness assessment can be
made.
•If a clay is not the right stiffness, let
us know, possibly we can provide you
with a custom stiffness, or are already
making one for someone else.
•If you need something special, contact
us for a custom mix. We can do as
little as 35 dry and 120 pugged. Ask for
our Native Clay Body Guide, outlining our
line of native materials from which you
can formulate your own bodies. Information is available on using these products,
as well as proper testing & evaluation
methods.
Speck Bodies
.2% 60-80 mesh manganese granular
speck is available in M340GS. Custom
speck mixes are sometimes produced with
M340G. Manganese bodies do not tolerate
over firing.
Raku
Most Plainsman throwing bodies (porcelains, terra cottas and stonewares) have
been used successfully in raku. In fact our
traditional raku body was H441G with a
coarser grog. However users have found
that close attention must be paid to cooling
these bodies to avoid cracking. However
we now have a body designed to be more
resistant to thermal shock. In addition it is
smoother and much better to throw than our
former raku body.
Salt Firing
Native materials used in Plainsman Clays
provided the basis for Industrial Salt Glaze
bodies used in sewer pipe since the turn of
the century. Bodies like H431/H435/H550/
H443 will provide a good starting point.
