PASSINGS…
A Remembrance of Friends and
Relatives That Have Passed On
1
Heavenly Father, please remember and
comfort my friends and their families, and
my family, as we remember our dear ones
who have joined you in Heaven. May our
sorrow pass to great joy in the knowledge
that You are looking after us and our loved
ones. Help us to appreciate each one as
they touched our lives in different and
special ways. Help us to help each other
when we are overcome with grief.
In your Son’s precious name we pray,
Amen.

Gregory James Cline
January 26, 1963 – April 30, 2015
(Age 52)
My old friend, especially from the 1970’s-80’s, cannot believe
you have left the earth; you will live on in your music & our
hearts & memories. He shared my passion for music, maybe
even more so. We collaborated on several songs that I wrote:
Greg took care of the rhythm and drums and sang a few times,
while I played guitars, keyboards, and most vocals. These were
his “early days” musically. Soon he picked up the guitar and
began playing and singing with other folks as I went away to
college at Purdue. We had some great and crazy times during
those early years. We were in touch occasionally after that, but
3
continued to share our music.
This is the cover of the last album Greg shared with me in the late 90’s.

Billy Dean Wilhite
October 09, 1929 – August 06, 2013
(Age 81)
Father of my long-time friend Brad Wilhite (now living in
Texas), whom I remember for getting me to enjoy green
peppers. I knew him only briefly before I moved to North
Carolina. But I know Brad kept in touch with him, and while
they would talk on the phone Billy would stand in front of
the webcam at The Republic’s newspaper office to wave as
they talked. I know he will be missed and I post this to
celebrate his life for all those lives he touched.

Joann Sebastian Daily
September 01, 1935 – June 28, 2013
(Age 77)
The beloved mother of my long-time friend Karen Daily
Kenny, whom I personally knew and loved. She was kind
and caring and I enjoyed my many contacts with her. She
was just 10 days older than my dad and graduated High
School with him. She and her husband Joe traveled to
several countries with my mom’s brother and his wife (Ron
& Rosie Trotter). Although she is now in Heaven, her
earthly presence will be greatly missed.

Joann Sebastian Daily, 77, of North Riverside Drive died at 2:39 a.m. Friday, June
28, 2013 at her home surrounded by her loving and devoted husband, children and
grandchildren.
Joann was a Registered Nurse and spent her career at Columbus Regional Hospital.
During her tenure, she worked in the Surgery and Recovery Room, Educational
Services and finished her career as a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse. After
retirement, Joann taught as an Adjunct Instructor of Nursing at Ivy Tech Columbus
Campus and at Hospice as an RN Educator. She completed many special projects
including training and orientation.
Born September 1, 1935 in Columbus, Indiana, she was the daughter of Master
Sergeant William Athrell Sebastian and Josephine Anna Fox Sebastian. As a young
child, she lived in many states before settling back in Columbus during her elementary
school years.
12
She graduated Columbus High School as Salutatorian. After high school, she
attended Indianapolis General Hospital School of Nursing but left before graduating to
marry her “sweetie”, Joseph Hager Daily on March 27, 1955. She returned to school in
the early 1970’s and with the unwavering support of her husband, earned her
Associate’s and Bachelor’s degree of Nursing at Indiana University, even completing a
third of her Master’s program. She graduated with High Distinction and was selected as
a member of Sigma Theta Tau, a nursing honorary association and was named in Who’s
Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Always a student and a
leader in the community, Joann was a graduate of Leadership Bartholomew County.
She was honored as Medical Professional of the Year by the American Heart
Association, Senior Citizen of the Year and served in executive membership roles with
the Indiana State Nurses Association, District 13. Personally, Joann was a long time
member of First Christian Church where she served in many ministry teams and
attended numerous Bible studies.
Joann was a dedicated nurse and friend who maintained a strong faith in God. She
was a woman with many interests and activities but her primary hobby was caring for
others above herself. She was blessed to have a strong and close-knit family along with
many life-long friends.

Mary Elizabeth (Epperson) Kaster
March 06, 1937 – June 29, 2009
(Age 94)
19
Great-Aunt Mary, or Aunt Mary as we called her, was my second-to-last
“great” relative to pass away (i.e., a sibling of one of my grandparents).
She was my Grandpa Floyd Epperson’s sister.
My family spent every Thanksgiving day (ALL day) at Aunt Mary’s through
my senior year in high school. After the wonderful midday Thanksgiving
meal, the men and boys would go rabbit hunting, while Aunt Mary and
whoever she let help her would clean up. Since Aunt Mary’s husband
Paul ran a family business (Kasco Manufacturing Co. Inc.), there were
also buildings for the children to explore, as well as the farmland. I
remember leaving for home after dark, very tired, and falling asleep on the
20-30 minute drive home to Columbus.
Aunt Mary made quilts and rugs from materials such as old clothing, and I
still have one of her quilts. Growing up I remember a large oval rug that
she made for us for our family room floor.
Aunt Mary was like her brother Floyd—humble, meek, caring, complaintless (basically they displayed the “fruits of the spirit”)—and they left a
very special and warm spot in your heart. Though greatly missed, we
know where they are and long for the day when we will join them.

In Memorium-Mark Wolfal
Muscatatuck suffered a major loss on
August 20 with the sudden death of Refuge
Volunteer Mark Wolfal.
Mark started volunteering at
Muscatatuck in the early 90s before he
retired from the telephone company. He
was our "champion" volunteer at
Muscatatuck, was a past "Volunteer of the
Year", and donated over 9,200 hours of
time to the refuge (and was working on
10,000). Mark was one of our "Three Guys
Construction Company" that built the initial
"bird viewing window" in the Visitor
Center, then went on to build an addition to
the Visitor Center (a Muscatatuck Wildlife
Society project) and create the "bird
viewing room".

Refuge, Winter 2007/7008, page 2.

Mark and friends refurbished Myers Cabin and Barn and made "animals" and
installed furnishings in those buildings by shopping with their own money at auctions
and yard sales. Mark also worked with other volunteers to build fishing piers at
Stanfield Lake and Lake Linda and to build the Endicott Observation deck. Mark
helped build bookstore fixtures/shelving and helped with the bookstore expansion
project a number of years ago. He helped with wood duck banding, cleared the river
hiking trails, mowed the Myers Cabin grounds on a regular basis, helped with the Take
A Kid Fishing Event and the Junior Duck Stamp program, and did whatever else that
needed doing. At the Log Cabin Day Festival Mark was our fire-builder and bean
cooker and the festival was not the same without him this year. Mark's last project, with
his friends Phil and Dick, was to build the sign kiosk at the main entrance gate.
The Wolfal's long have been a "volunteering" family. Mark's wife Maxine Wolfal
has been the Muscatatuck Wildlife Society Bookstore Manager for many years. Mark
and Maxine had three daughters and the grandchildren could frequently be found
helping in the bookstore when they were younger. Mark's daughter Lori established the
"Refuge Rangers" program at Hayden School and is a "prize-winning" Junior Duck
Stamp Contest teacher and member of the Board of Directors of the Muscatatuck29
Wildlife Society.

Refuge, Winter 2007/7008, page 2.

Mark Wolfal organized the MWS book sale at the Hoosier Association of Science
Teachers Conference for many years. Mark made Muscatatuck a better place.
Mark assisted Maxine with her bookstore work on a regular basis and could usually
be found there on Saturdays helping with stocking and inventory work. Mark was also a
major player in building racks for the (annual) MWS book sales at the Hoosier
Association of Science Teachers Conference in Indianapolis and had the loading and
transport of the books back and forth from HASTI each year down to a science.
Mark had many talents and was a knowledgeable archaelogist who had helped the
State of Indiana and several universities with archaelogical digs around the State. He
was an internet researcher and the author of four books with another one in progress
when he passed away. Mark was also a super nice guy with a sense of humor who made
a tremendous and very noticeable difference at Muscatatuck NWR. He will be greatly
missed.
