They can help transfer all of your contacts and content and take you through the process step-by-step by connecting to your old device using Bluetooth. But if you don’t have access to those apps it’s still pretty straightforward getting your stuff across to your new Android device. It’s a good idea to set up a Gmail account if you don’t already have one – you’re going to need it to sign in to your new Android device – and it gives users a place to save their contacts. SWITCHING TO ANDROID With the number of attractive and feature-packed Android smartphones on the rise there are a growing number of people looking to move away from their old device and step into a whole new world. But one thing that is holding them back, despite the desire to move to a device with a larger screen and stylish design, is the fear they won’t be able to make the switch. Migrating from other operating systems to Android is actually easier than you think. There are a number of tips, tricks and apps that can help users transfer things like their contacts, calendar, email, music, apps and photos quite easily. If you have been using a Gmail account with your existing phone make sure you’ve selected to sync your contacts in the settings. If your existing phone is backed up to a cloud based service there is a selection of apps, including one called SmoothSync that can bring information like contacts and calendars to the new smartphone. To get the music from your music library on your computer across to your Android device you’ll need to download the Google Music Manager which can transfer up to 20,000 songs for free. Photos are the most precious form of content for most users and getting them on to the Android device is important – and pretty easy to do. A $1.99 app called Photo Transfer can do the heavy lifting or you or you can use a Windows application called ‘iCloud Control panel’ if you’ve got images backed up in your cloud based service and want to transfer them to Android. Another solution is to store your images on cloud storage service like Dropbox and Google Drive and then bring them down to your new device using a wireless network. There’s also the good old drag and drop method if you’re photos are backed up on your computer so just attach the Android device to your computer with a USB cable. Mac users can also download Google File Transfer and copy files directly from your computer to the Android device. To get your email working on your new device you’ll need to take note of the settings from your existing handset and enter them when you’re going through the email set-up on your Android smartphone. And there’s no need to save mailboxes whether you’re using a personal or corporate account. Once you’re email settings are in place – the device will contact the server and populate your inbox again. Now when it comes to apps you’re going to have to simply download the Android equivalent. But the good news is most of the most popular apps like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Skype, WhatsApp and Viber all have Android equivalents and you can simply sign in to your existing account. APP CHAT WITH RICHARD — OUR APP CHAP SLIP, SLOP SL’APP Between surfing the last waves of Summer, the Virgin Mobile apps team have been tackling and testing the latest and greatest in app land, and here are this month’s five of the best: For those of you who missed getting into med school, Amateur Surgeon 3 is a great opportunity to hone your surgery skills, without risking an extended spell inside. Wielding a pizza cutter, chainsaw, staple gun, and a swag of equally inappropriate tools, you play as rookie surgeon Ophelia Payne, dissecting more than 20 over-the-top surgeries. It’s pretty gruesome stuff (and all the more disturbing, given that my kids love it) but this is a surprisingly addictive game from the loons that brought us adult swim. Can you believe that there are actually two games that preceded this? Making the most of a really simple idea, Heads Up is an app version of Ellen DeGeneres’ favourite parlour game, and a neat digital take on the game ‘celebrity head’. The premise is really simple – players select a category (anything from blockbuster movies to super heroes) and then hold the phone in front of their forehead so that supporting players can see who / what they are, and provide clues for them to guess to. Each round is timed, and the winner is the person who can guess the most answers in the allotted time. The idea is to get you running further and faster by challenging you to complete a series of ‘missions’. Users can also discover great new places to eat, see what’s nearby using GPS , or browse a comprehensive list of restaurants. You can even make a reservation and see what you friends think of a venue before you check it out. Another app we’re loving right now is flipboard. Designed to help you manage the news by offering articles reformatted into a magazine style with very readable text and large images, this app looks particularly funky on tablets. The unique “flip” interface is perfect for lounge-y Sunday mornings, when all you want to do is slurp coffee and search for something interesting to switch off to.
