As I write this article, it does not seem like any kind of lake activity weather. Snow, ice and just plain cold. The great thing about North Texas is we all know it will not last long. As it does start to warm up. We will crank up the project list. Just a reminder to everyone, if you need or see a item that needs addressed please let the Rear Commodore, Dick Peters know. Dick is in charge of helping Mark, our groundskeeper, assure that things are in good working order. You can find his email address at www.dcyc.org. As for activities at the club, please make sure to check the calendar section on the website. We are trying to make sure that the site is updated and accurate. I continue to be excited about the growth of the club. Membership continues to be ahead of the prior year. This is not only going to allow us to fund all the projects we spelled out. It will also allow to handle any unexpected issues that may occur. The growth up near DCYC continues to explode and I do not see any reason why our membership will not do the same. Once again, I want to thank all the people that devote countless hours of work around the club. I really appreciate your efforts. I will see you around the club... Volume 9, Issue 3 Page 5 A NOTE FROM THE VICE COMMODORE by Dick Peters As I write this note, it is hard to believe that Spring is around the corner. It’s 24 degrees out, the roads are ice covered, as are our boats, and tomorrow’s not looking much better. But this is Texas. We’ll be racing in 5 days. We may not live in the Caribbean, but it’s better than Michigan (in the winter). groups and various interests. Just think of what is to come. Near term are a Gumbo Cook-off & Cajun Dinner, Spring Race series, the April 18th Opening Day Celebration, the Heritage Cup Regatta, and a shared event at Our Club with the Fort Worth Boat Club to name a few. Lots of fun to be had by all! With all that fun, there has to be a price, even though it is a low one. DCYC is a volunteer Club. By doing much of our own maintenance we are able to keep maintenance Less than two months into the year, we already have had costs low, the club looking great and membership costs some great events: low. You should be proud that we have been able to not New Year’s Eve Party only maintain the club, but also pay for capital projects New Year’s Brunch without an increase in dues for some time. Take the Helm Women’s sessions Well, it’s getting to be that time of year again. With all The Frostbite Series of the events at the beginning of the year, available days Junior Sailing classes where it will likely be warm, later in the Spring, are Burger Burn scarce. We have settled on April 4th, which is the Pot Luck Dinner Saturday before Easter. We typically start early in the Valentine’s Day Race morning, spend 3 or 4 hours working, and finish with Valentine’s Day Dinner some lunch. It’s a great chance to meet other club The reason I list these events is to make you aware of all members. Please plan on helping Our Club by planning of the opportunities there are to have a great time with on joining us for this important event and put this date your DCYC Clubmates. Not bad for less than two on your calendar. months (Cold ones) into the year. On top of that, realize Thanks ~ Dick Peters – Vice Commodore that if you analyze the list, there were events for all age DCYC Members getting ready to race in the January Frostbite Series Volume 9, Issue 3 Page 6 REAR COMMODORE REPORT by James Hankins 2015 is off to a great start. The Valentine dinner was a great success with over 80 attending including new members; Freeman, Ford and Allen. I give a lot of credit to the success to the hosts Kristin & Dave Lyon. When they are the hosts you can always expect a great turn out and a fabulous meal. New membership is active with four last month and two this month, and a few new applicants under review. This year I have formed a membership committee, which includes me, Bob Johnson, Lisa Wilder, and Karen Johnson. We have been busy behind the scenes to improve communication with not only new members, but all members, plus other administrative items to ensure you get the most out of your membership. However, we can’t do it alone. You play a big part in your enjoyment in keeping your club running efficiently. Please consider getting INVOLVED by participating in the socials, events, work parties, and volunteering as much as possible and you will make friends for life and the club will be a better place because of you. “GET INVOLVED”. Plan now to attend the OPEN HOUSE scheduled for April 18th and invite a guest to show off our fabulous facility. In anticipation of the OPEN HOUSE we have scheduled a CLEAN-UP DAY on April 4th so “GET INVOLVED” by grabbing your broom and tool box then roll up your sleeves and join us. This is a great opportunity for you to give back to the club and your chance to work side by side with your members of the club. If you have any questions about how to “GET INVOLVED” please contact me at [email protected] or 214-549-1122 or any one of the committee members. NEW MEMBER PROFILE ~ RYAN & JESSICA KIRK Captain Kirk and The Enterprise Have Joined DCYC by Lisa Wilder Ryan and Jessica Kirk joined DCYC in January. They moved to the DFW area 5 years ago from Hawaii. They currently live in Irving. However, they met while in high school in COLD Omaha, Nebraska. Ryan is a Broker Manager working for Fidelity and Jessica is in Law School at SMU. Their hobbies are charity 5Ks and mud runs/obstacle races, vacationing and reading. They have interest in helping out at the club in any way they can. Ryan is very handy with cars and has experience remodeling and fixing things. Jessica has a background in interior architecture and sustainable building design. They have boated in Hawaii, Lake Michigan, Georgia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Over the Christmas holidays they attended ASA sailing school on a 38' Cat. One highlight was when they were racing back to the harbor in 25 knot winds; they were able to sail directly in while all the other boats had to cut and take the higher angle. The “Christmas Winds” and waves were in full force, but they both completed ASA courses 101, 103, 104 and 114. They found DCYC through our website and looking at boats for sale. They just bought an Ericson 29 and will name her Enterprise. With Kirk as a last name, no other name for a boat would do. They are currently training crew members – Ryan’s little brother and Jessica’s brother. They have been out sailing several times recently. They have interest in sailing and pleasure cruising. They are also interested in crewing. You can reach Ryan at 402-618-8401 or [email protected] and Jessica at 402-305-0562 or [email protected]. Racers gathering at DCYC after a Frostbite race Volume 9, Issue 3 Page 8 NEW MEMBER PROFILE ~ JIM FORD & MI-HYUN BACON Welcome Jim Ford and his wife Mi-Hyun Bacon by Lisa Wilder Jim and Mi-Hyun joined the club in January. They have three daughters; Allison Ford (34), Michelle Bacon (25) and Mina Bacon (23) and son Taylor Ford (31). The “love of their life” is their grandchild, Eva Victoria Lerner, who is only 3 months old. Jim and Mi-Hyun have lived in Frisco for the past 6+ years and were in Valley Ranch prior to that. Jim grew up in Milford, Connecticut and worked in Danbury when he was transferred to the DFW area in January, 1977. Mi-Hyun moved here from South Korea when she was 20 years old with her parents. Jim is VP of Sales for Embassy Building Maintenance and Mi-Hyun is an office manager at Smile Dental Center in Dallas. They have been boating many years in Texas and the northeast, including Long Island Sound, Milford, CT, Lake Grapevine, Lake Lewisville and Lake Texoma. They have had a slip for 19 years at Grand Pappy Marina on Lake Texoma. For 16 years they kept a 1980 Hunter 33’ Therapy and the past three years have 1985 Hunter 40’ My Lady. This past November, Jim and his friend Ed Peacock, went down to Florida and purchased Annie Girl, a 1988 Halman 21’ sailboat. She has a canoe stern, full keel, sloop, with a rolling furling, 9.9 Yamaha outboard and bronze portholes. Jim says she’s a stiff, salty dog that draws a lot of nice compliments everywhere she goes. Jim and his wife joined DCYC because of the positive stories they had heard about the club and the proximity to their home at “The Shores of Hidden Cove.” They have been boating at DCYC with friends Don Legg and Ed Peacock. When I asked Jim for a “boating story” to share, he told me the old saying “There are only two types of sailors; those that have run aground and those are going to run aground.” He said he was happy to report that he had managed to get that one out of the way. He and his friend Don accomplished running aground on their very first sail with Annie Girl. It happened right in front of the DCYC Clubhouse about 100 yards from opposite shore. He was glad it was on a Friday and hardly anyone was around to see it. A couple of guys who were working on the new gazebo saw them and sent someone to help pull them out of the mud. He sends a heartfelt thanks to those guys! In addition to sailing, Jim and Mi-Hyun love to travel. When Jim was asked what talents he has to share, he commented he is probably the most unhandy guy on the planet, but if you ever need someone to plug in the TV give him a call. We look forward to getting to know Jim and Mi-Hyun. You can reach Jim at [email protected] or on his cell 214-886-6141. Volume 9, Issue 3 Page 9 NEW MEMBER PROFILE ~ TIM ALLEN Tim Allen (Tooltime) joins the Club by Lisa Wilder Tim Allen joined DCYC in February. I had the chance to meet Tim and his lovely girlfriend, Jennifer Downs, at the Valentine’s dinner. We had great time getting to know each other a little better. Tim is a true Texan. He WAS born in the state and raised in the Dallas areas. He has a daughter, Shannon (17) and a son, Sean (22) and he currently lives in The Colony. He is a Systems Engineer for a software sales company. He has always been mechanically inclined and can figure out how to repair most things, which comes in handy with a name like Tim Allen and a “Tool Time” email address. He is also very experienced with computer hardware and software. In addition, he was employed in his early years with lots of types of construction, so has some “tool” skills. He just bought Wind Dancer, a 1982 Catalina 25 and is in the process of changing her name. He has boating experience on Lake Lewisville, Canyon Lake, Possum Kingdom, and Lake Conroe. He is very interested in learning to race and knows a good step in that process is learning how the Committee boat process works. Other possible volunteer interests are pleasure cruising and possibly Docks/Harbors. In addition to sailing, Tim likes tennis, shooting sports, NASCAR, computers and watching Dallas area professional sports teams. You can reach Tim at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing Tim and his crew at the club. NEW MEMBER PROFILE ~ NICK & TAMIKA TRAVASCIO The Travascio Family by Lisa Wilder Nick and Tamika Travascio joined the Club in February. They have three kids; Hannah 12, Luke 8 and Cole 5. They live in Oak Point, so just a jump, hop and skip away from the Club. Nick is a Financial Advisor and Tamika has the hard and rewarding job of being a stay-at-home mom. They joined DCYC for the social activities, boating and the advantage of having a slip and boat storage so close to home. They own a 2014 Crownline 255 SS and have owned boats their entire marriage. The whole family loves being out on the water and favorite activities include cruising, skiing, tubing and wake-boarding with the kids. This active family enjoys the outdoors, boating, snow skiing and a variety of sports. Please welcome Nick, Tamika and the kids. Volume 9, Issue 3 Page 10 NEW MEMBER PROFILE ~ JAMES FREEDMAN & COURTNEY NAPUTI (WITH GINGER) J/24 Skipper James Freedman joins DCYC by Lisa Wilder James joined DCYC in January. James lives in Fort Worth and works for AIG as a Sr. Solution Architect. He and his girlfriend, Courtney Naputi, recently raced in the DCYC Couples race and attended the Valentine’s dinner. James has two children; a son, Nick (18) who lives with him and a daughter, Hannah (13) who currently lives in Italy. James has been sailing and racing almost his entire life. As a kid, he raced in District, Region, Midwinters, Nationals, North Americans and World Championships. He has raced in dinghies, J/24s, J/22s, and J/80s. He raced on the Farr 40 circuit and Laser Nationals in Nashville Tennessee at Lake Percy Priest. He joking says, yes they even have lakes and racing in Nashville. Most of his life he has been the skipper, however, there were a few years where he was a race crew member. He has a great story about “running through the Canadian border”. When he was 14, they drove up to Greenwich Connecticut for the Youth Championships, with about 30 kids and boats in 6 vans. After the Regatta they drove to Gimli, Manitoba for the Laser 2 North Americans on Lake Winnipeg in Canada. When his van crossed the border, no border patrol was visible. However, as they passed someone came out and appeared to wave them on. They drove about 15 miles and realized no one from the caravan was behind them. They turned around and went back to find the team. That’s when they found out the Canadians were really upset that they had run the border!! James has a J/24 and a Laser. The J/24 is named Miss Conduct after his father’s previous J/24 her owned in the 90s. He comes to DCYC from the Fort Worth Boat Club. He is primarily a sailboat racer, but also loves pleasure cruising night and day and loves to power boat as well. His hobbies are sailboat racing and computer programming. When asked about his talents, he says he has three: Website programming or IT, sailboat racing and running a company. Besides those, he says he has “no clue”. He is familiar with every yacht club in the area. He has sailed at DCYC in the past and has several friends that are members. He primarily joined DCYC for the active J/24 fleet and the water in the lake. He interested in volunteering in any of the DCYC areas. Of note, he did coaching for the junior program at the FWBC. It’s great to have such an experienced racer join DCYC. You can contact James at [email protected] or 214-864-6024. Life jackets…Don’t leave them at home! Q: What do you call a one-eyed deer? A: bad idear. (For example, sailing without appropriate life jackets.) Butters (right) says… “A life jacket not only saves lives, it makes for a great pillow after those post race gatherings!” Volume 9, Issue 3 Page 11 FROM YOUR FLEET CAPTAIN by Peter Brigaitis As I write this, North Texas is once again sitting under a thin blanket of ice, but that doesn’t mean the DCYC race program is dormant. January saw the completion of a very successful Frostbite Series with team Bad Moon taking the honors in a nine-boat-strong J/24 fleet. John Finks and crew on Shotglass won top honors in the PHRF fleet. Also, on Valentine’s Day we had 16 boats hit the water for a couple laps of a (roughly) heart-shaped course. Juan and Maia Mauri took the top J/24 spot on sr. happy, and Ramon Torres and Julia Wayland won the PHRF fleet on 80 Proof. DCYC home for their Mid-America Championships. With all this activity going on, I would like to invite all members to get more involved in the race program. We have a number of boats that would love to teach new crew members the ropes. And if you are a new skippper, we will be hosting a few informal race clinics throughout the year to focus on the starting sequence and racecourse strategies. Another way to get involved is to participate in race committee. As the springtime progresses, we will be hosting a race committee class that teaches everything you need to know to run a committee boat. This class is also a great opportunity for racers to brush up on their knowledge of the race flags. And this year we will also be using the class as an orientation for our NEW COMMITTEE BOAT! That’s right, DCYC is the proud owner of a new (to us) Sportcraft 27 that will be serving as our primary RC platform. Participants in the Valentine’s Day race got to see her in action for her first RC duties. I cannot remember that last time we had such great participation so early in the year. Now with the Spring Series right around the corner, we are poised for a great race season. Along with our club series, DCYC will host a It is going to be a great year for DCYC. On Sunday, February 8th, eleven women gathered for our event. After a brief discussion on docking, we headed down to the boats for some light wind sailing. We sailed on J/24 Bad Moon and J/80 Shotglass for this event. Our ladies rotated positions and learned how to drive, trim upwind/downwind, and foredeck. Afterwards we had a nice debrief in the beautiful weather that this winter day provided to us! A huge thanks to Kelly Holmes-Moon and Randall Massey for the use of their boats. Our next event will be March 28th. We will be learning about sail trim and then heading out on the water for some sailing. Please sign up early. Due to limited spots on the boats, we will need to plan accordingly with our skippers. A link can be found on the DCYC Events page. Fair winds and following seas!
