BHOPAL – AT A GLIMPSE Upper Lake (Bhoj Taal) : This 31 Km² expanse of th Bhopal was founded by the legendary polymath king Raja Bhoj in the 11 century C.E and was converted into a th modern city by Nawab Dost Mohammad Khan in early 18 century. It is one of the greenest cities in India and also one of the greatest education hubs of India. Many institutes of national importance are located here. Popularly known as the “City of Lakes” it spreads across an area of 658 Km² and has a population of 3 million people. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was originally commissioned by emperor rd Ashoka in 3 century BCE. His inscriptions were deciphered here in 1837 – till then nobody knew there was an emperor called Ashoka in India!! The back-toback lions of the south gate here form the official symbol of India. The Great Emperor caused the message of peace of Sakya Muni Gauthama Sidhartha spread far and wide from here and made Buddhism a global religion. Bhimbetka Rock Shelter Taj-ul-Masajid : This colossus of a mosque in marble and exquisitely carved stone, is acknowledged as the biggest in India. It can seat 1,75,000 faithful. Started in 1844 by Nawab Shah Jehan Begum, it was completed in 1985. Its 18 storied minarets, prominent in Bhopal skyline, jut into the sky seeking the blessings of the Merciful Almighty for the citizens of the City of lakes.
