Chase Garden Creek Salt Marsh
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT IN 2014
The past twelve months were full of new programs, new land donations
and new faces at the Dennis Conservation Trust. Highlights include three
land donations from generous families, the creation of Interactive
Conservation Areas that incorporate technology with outdoor recreation
at popular conservation areas around Dennis, several new educational
workshops including the Backyard Birding lecture, and the welcoming of
new Trustees. This energy will continue into the New Year as DCT faces
2015 with a reinforced goal of land protection in the Dennis community.
We could not accomplish any of this without the support of our members.
Wishing your family a happy and healthy New Year!

DCT’s Newest Gift of Land
In late summer, the
Sears family of East
Dennis approached
DCT about the
potential donation of a
2.92 acre parcel of salt
marsh along Sesuit
Creek. The parcel has
been in the Sears
family for many
generations and is
protected through a
conservation restriction
held by MA Audubon
Society since 1970.
DCT Trustees were
thrilled with the
prospect of receiving
such an important
piece of land. Salt marshes are vital resources on Cape Cod by providing
a coastal buffer during storm events and filtering contaminants from
ground water. This parcel also falls within state recognized Core Habitat
and Critical Natural Landscapes.
In a statement from Bob Ford, MassAudubon Land Conservation
Specialist, “We are delighted that the Sears family has donated this land
to the Dennis Conservation Trust (DCT), a respected and dedicated
conservation organization that we have partnered with on other projects.
Mass Audubon holds a conservation restriction on this property further
protecting the land. Thanks to DCT’s efforts and the Sears family’s
foresight and dedication, this pristine salt marsh will remain pristine
for people and wildlife to enjoy.”

Happy 90th Birthday to DCT Trustee Jim Wick
by Joe Masse
In whatever enterprise Jim Wick
undertakes, whether that be in
affordable housing, as Treasurer of the
Cape Symphony, or Treasurer of the
Dennis Conservation Trust, Jim not
only brings a keen intellect and
unbridled enthusiasm, but also respect
for the job and for those with whom he
works.
Having worked with many "leaders"
throughout my own career I know one
when I interact with one, and Jim
epitomizes what we all should expect
in a leader. He is thoughtful,
respectful, enthusiastic, and still driven
to accomplish whatever task he signs
up for.
Jim spends much of his volunteer time
as Treasurer of the Dennis
Conservation Trust. In that role Jim
has brought new ideas that have either
enhanced our financial position or
helped us define and control the financial processes of the Trust.
Jim is one of our most active and enthusiastic Trustees. His concept of
enhancing important conservation sites within the Town of Dennis in
both a physical and interactive way further evidences Jim's passion for
the land simply proves that at 90 years old he has "only just begun."
Years from now, when you and your future
generations walk the
natural paths and places of Dennis, take pride in
knowing that your
continued efforts preserve them.

Please contact Connie Mooers at [email protected]
for more information.

2014 DCT Committee Reports
Land Committee
The Land Committee was very
active in securing land donations,
soliciting conservation restrictions to
protect family lands, and managing
properties for public enjoyment. We
added five new acres to protective
status. Currently, DCT owns and
maintains over 380 acres of upland,
wetlands, and woodland. DCT also holds conservation restrictions on
over 164 acres of privately and publicly owned land. DCT continues to
provide reliable information to families about conservation options and
associated tax incentives. If you are interested in learning more about
protecting your land, please call the DCT Administrator Katherine Garofoli, at 508-362-3422.
DCT would not be able to monitor its properties without the help of more
than 20 Land Stewards. The devoted group of volunteers performs site
visits to DCT properties and reports on their condition. DCT also relies
heavily on Barnstable County AmeriCorps Cape Cod for invasive species
removal and trail maintenance. The AmeriCorps members provided over
140 hours of service to DCT in 2014 alone. DCT is extremely grateful
for the community support to care for the special places of Dennis.
Auction and Events Committee
The DCT Auction and Events Committee is pleased to report that the
2014 DCT Summer Evening Live and Silent Auction set a record for
highest income in DCT history with over $78,000 raised. DCT could not
have accomplished any of this without the support of corporate sponsors,
local businesses, volunteers, and attendees. Save the date July 26, 2015
for our annual Summer Evening and Auction. This is a not-to-be-missed
event that includes food, libations, raffle, auction, and most importantly
friends. It is the Dennis social event of the year. Come join us.

2014 DCT Committee Reports
Membership Committee
The 2014 DCT membership drive raised over $45,000 in the last twelve
months. This is more than any membership drive since DCT was
founded. We hope the total will continue to increase until year-end as a
result of a recent solicitation to all residents of Dennis Village, the first
of a series of efforts. The increased total is attributable primarily to a
number of members increasing their traditional level of support – such as
from Patron ($100-$199) to Advocate ($200-$499) or Advocate to
Partner ($500-$999). We are very grateful to people who have made
such increased gifts. Additional income was raised from a “mini capital
campaign” within the Board of Directors which generated over $20,000
in gifts and pledges to support the operating budget and new programs
being initiated with the leadership of our new administrator
Katherine Garofoli.
Communications and Publicity Committee
The Communication
Committee continued its
efforts to publicize the work
of DCT as well as to
promote events.
Attendance at our events has
increased significantly, and
we’re grateful to the local
media who help us let the
community know what
we’re doing.
We welcomed more than 60 participants to this year’s Exploring Oysters
at Crowes Pasture walk and nearly 70 attendees to the 2014 Annual
Meeting. An overhaul of our website, increased use of social media, and
expanded efforts in education and community outreach are in our 2015
plans.

2014 DCT Committee Reports
Committee on Trustees
The Committee on Trustees functions to appoint or reappoint
Trustees and Advisers. In 2013, five founding Trustees were elected to
new five year terms: Richard A. Johnston, Carole Bell, Connie Bechard,
Beverley LeBlanc and Edmond Nickerson, plus Frank Dahlstrom. In
2014, elected to five year terms as Trustees were David Berry,
Dorria DiManno, Joseph Masse, Paul McCormick, Paul Prue, and
Jim Wick. Elected to a one year term as Advisor was Norman Taupeka.
President, Richard A. Johnston, Vice President Carole Bell, and
Treasurer Jim Wick remain as officers.
Finance Committee
The Finance Committee is a group of conservative individuals who are
able to have fun while managing DCT’s finances. In 2014, the
Finance Committee initiated the Strategic Planning Process, helping the
Trust craft its business plan for the next several years. The Finance Committee also worked closely with the Membership Committee to close the
gap between receipts and expenses. An enthusiastic response from the
Trustees will allow DCT to operate in the black for the next five years.

On November 8, 2014, DCT held its 26th Annual Meeting at the Dennis
Memorial Library. This event was significant as DCT presented the first
Norton H. Nickerson Jr. Conservation Award to Henry Kelley II. The purpose
of the award is to honor a person who has influenced conservation in the Town
of Dennis, much like the efforts of Dr. Nickerson, Jr. The DCT Trustees found
it fitting to present the award to Henry Kelley II for his work to protect Crowes
Pasture, Bass River Park, Old Fort Field, and Sea View Park, along with
leading the Land Bank and Community Preservation Committee for many
years.
Over 60 attendees enjoyed a barrier beach
presentation by Coastal Specialist Greg
Berman and many donated refreshments.
DCT would like to thank the Dennis Memorial Library, Whole Foods Market, and
Peterson’s Market for their generous
donations.
