Thanks to Mick Guest, Peter and Maureen Crook, Richard Jones, Peter Angus and Rob Giovannelli for helping out in this “last minute” emergency request from the Derby Rotary Club. The July club invoice will reflect an increase in the additional dues collected for Council on Legislation expenses. The amount has increased from $1 to $1.50 per member. This is the first time the additional dues have increased since 2002, and the money will help Rotary meet Council expenses in 2016 and future years. The work of Rotarian Steve Hasledine (Derby Mercia) was reported in February 2014 after his presentation to the District Council. Using these £25 credit-card-sized single board computers, Rotarians, Industalists, Lecturers and Teachers have encouraged pupils to learn more about “programming”. Steve attended a Club meeting on 25th April with an update on the organisation’s progress. Remarkably 3 million computers had been sold and he reported that “Derby was the leading technology city in the UK.” The computers are used at home and in “after hours” school clubs. This charity, linked to RotaKids, is seeking fundraisers and volunteers to extend its panel of experts. The aim is to have these computers in every Derby School by September. It is hoped that Derbyshire County will take up this initiative. Perhaps this will encourage both boys and girls to take up Engineering. SVP Richard Jones gave the vote of thanks. At the meeting on 14th April after the Easter recess, Rotarian Michael Storr of the Carlton Club conducted a Stock Exchange game. Nine members competed to raise the most money from the rise and fall of fictional stocks. At the end of the evening the winners were Pradeep Thomas, Richard Jones and Paul Hackney. Michael Storr reading out (humorously) how the shares had fluctuated during a previous week. At the end of the meeting the Club Youth committee promised a £1000 donation towards the charity’s development. Rotarian Steve Haseldine with his display poster and camera. At the end of the meeting President Nick presented Mike with a cheque towards his personal charity, “Asthma U.K.” PP David Whitaker during his “Far Eastern” Cruise. Many years ago in Scotland , a new game was invented. It was ruled 'Gentlemen Only...Ladies Forbidden'.. . and thus, the word GOLF entered into the English language. There is now a “Fellowship for Cruising Rotarians” organised by Rhonda Whitton, Kardinia Rotary Club, Victoria, Australia. No membership fee but they do have a Facebook page.
