DESERONTO ARCHIVES First Deseronto death in World War One
April 24th, 1915 saw the first death of a person with a Deseronto
connection in the First World War.
John ‘Jack’ Martin had joined up in Valcartier, Quebec on
th
September 13 , 1914. He was born on June 11, 1893 in Deseronto, the son of William Martin and Harriet (née
Salter). He attended Deseronto High School but by 1911 had moved with his mother and brother to New
Westminster, British Columbia.
On his attestation paper Jack was described as being five feet and nine inches tall, with a dark complexion, brown
eyes and brown hair. Martin joined the 7th Battalion (British Columbia Regiment), No. 4 Company, with the
regimental number 17142.
Jack Martin was reported missing, presumed dead, on April 24, 1915 after the Second Battle of Ypres. This battle
was the first in which chlorine gas was used as a weapon by the Germans. It was the first major engagement of the
war for the 7th Battalion and nearly two-thirds of the men who fought in it lost their lives.

battleofypres.blogspot.com
Jack's body was not recovered after the battle. His
name appears on the Menin Gate memorial.
In total, 40 of the Deseronto and Tyendinaga men who
signed up to the Canadian Expeditionary Force had died
by the end of 1918. A further two died in 1919 and
1920 as a result of their service. In total in the
Deseronto First World War Memorial project we are
following the wartime careers of 302 local people (two
women and 300 men).
The chart below shows the distribution of deaths of
Deseronto-area people over the course of the war,
beginning with Jack Martin in April 1915:
Ten of the 42 men who died were killed by illnesses or
disease of various kinds. The remaining 32 were killed in
action or died of injuries received while fighting. In a
later article, we'll take a look at the corresponding
figures for the men of the Royal Flying Corps (later the
Royal Air Force) who died while they were attached to
the Deseronto and Tyendinaga pilot training camps.
You can read more about the people who signed up
from this area at

News from the Deseronto
Volunteer Fire Department
and the Ontario Fire Marshall’s
Office
As of APRIL 15, 2015, you must install a carbon monoxide alarm adjacent to all sleeping areas if your home has a
fuel-burning appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage.
When it comes to carbon monoxide safety, we all have a role to play.
What is carbon monoxide?
•
Carbon monoxide (CO) is known as the silent killer because it is an invisible, tasteless and odourless gas that
can be deadly.
•
CO is produced when fuels such as propane, gasoline, natural gas, heating oil or wood do not burn
completely in fuel-burning appliances and devices such as furnaces, fireplaces, hot water heaters, stoves,
barbeques, portable heaters and generators or vehicles.
•
Over 80% of CO-related injuries and deaths in Ontario occur in the home (source: TSSA).
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning:
•
Exposure to CO can cause flu-like symptoms such as headaches, nausea and dizziness, as well as confusion,
drowsiness, loss of consciousness and death.
•
If your CO alarm sounds, and you or other occupants suffer from symptoms of CO poisoning, get everyone
out of the home immediately. Then call 9-1-1 or your local emergency services number from outside the
building.
•
If your CO alarm sounds, and no one is suffering from symptoms of CO poisoning, check to see if the battery
needs replacing, or the alarm has reached its "end-of-life" before calling 9-1-1.
•
If you should have any questions please feel free to contact me.

BUSINESS & DEVELOPMENT NEWS
Deseronto Dollars
In an effort to support Deseronto businesses by encouraging Deseronto
and area residents to buy local, the Town launched a “Deseronto
Dollar” gift certificate program in 2008. Deseronto Dollars gift
certificates are awarded as prizes by the Municipality for a number of
local events and programs throughout
the year, and can also be purchased by
private individuals or businesses to give as gifts or in store promotions. Deseronto
Dollar gift certificates never expire, and are available in $5, $10, and $20
denominations. They must be redeemed for their full face value in one transaction
(no change will be given). They are easy to purchase, fun to give, and even more
fun to use because they can be used like cash at any participating Deseronto
business. Customers tend to spend more than the value of the gift certificates,
return to shop again in the future, which results in increased sales for local
businesses.
All businesses have the opportunity to be reimbursed by the Municipality for the
value of certificates redeemed. For example, if a customer redeems $20 in
Deseronto Dollars, businesses are welcome to bring the Deseronto Dollars to the
Town Hall where they will be reimbursed for the full value. It is up to businesses
whether they choose to be reimbursed for the coupons or not.
Many businesses are aware of this program, and have participated since it was first
launched. We hope businesses are
finding the program to be
worthwhile, and would like to take
this opportunity to encourage ongoing participation, as well as to
invite new businesses to participate in this program.
Your participation in this program is greatly appreciated. Please
notify the Economic Development Department if you do not wish to
participate in this program (Dana Valentyne,
[email protected], 613-396-2440).
