May “Connect” - Louisiana Art & Science Museum

THANK YOU
There are several exiting changes on the
way at your Art & Science Museum!
The following contributions were received after
February 26 and before March 17, 2015.
Over the next couple of months, look
for the emergence of our new logo. This
logo was created to better represent
what we uniquely offer: art, science, and
their connections with each other—and
with each of us. The words “ART” and
“SCIENCE” are given more emphasis.
The ampersand tying them together
represents the merger of these disciplines with a combination of artistic
brushstroke and smooth, careful lines. The logo is chameleon-like; it can fill
either negative or positive space, and its colors can change, depending upon the
context.
Members who upgraded are noted below in bold—thank you!
A redesigned and mobile-friendly website, reflecting our updated look, will be
launched in June. The new website will serve as a resource for information on
current and upcoming programming, exhibitions, The Museum Store, visitor
information, and so much more. Also in the works is a blog to feature in-depth,
original content on topics of interest that relate to our program offerings and the
art and science connection that sets us apart.
Meanwhile on the outside at the north end of the building, you will soon be able
to enjoy a new public space perfect for taking a break or a picnic lunch, brought to
you courtesy of the Downtown Development District.
Visit us soon, online and in person, to enjoy and help us celebrate these exciting
changes!

JUNE 15 – 19 | AGES 7 – 10 | FULL AND HALF DAY OPTIONS
$125 MEMBERS, $140 NON-MEMBERS
$165 MEMBERS, $190 NON-MEMBERS
This summer, let your little campers explore the amazing world of astronomy
through unique and educational science and art experiences that encourage
discovery and inspire creativity. Children will enjoy private time under the
stars each morning in the Art & Science Museum’s state-of the-art Irene W.
Pennington Planetarium as they identify constellations, planets, and the phases
of the moon while participating in fun, interactive programs. This year’s exciting
interdisciplinary activities include making a comet, building telescopes, using
video microscopes, and exploring nanoscience and engineering. To celebrate the
International Year of Light, campers will create illuminated art and experiment
with prisms, lasers and spectrum analysis.
Each camper will receive a camp T-shirt, certificate of completion, and a telescope
of his or her own creation.
To register, e-mail Sheree Westerhaus at [email protected].

MONUMENTS & METAPHORS:
ART IN PUBLIC SPACES
EMERSON BELL: A TRIBUTE
THROUGH JUNE 28 | MAIN GALLERIES
This exhibition acknowledges the generous spirit and gifted art of
Emerson Bell (1931-2006), a noted painter and sculptor raised in South
Baton Rouge. The first artist-in-residence in the East Baton Rouge Parish
Schools to be supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, Bell
taught young people throughout the community, and later mentored
many an aspiring professional artist. Among his peers were musician
Alvin Batiste and artists Frank Hayden and John Payne. The art on view
is accompanied by insightful quotes by Bell and those who knew him.
THROUGH JUNE 21 | COLONNADE GALLERY
Baton Rouge is on the move and public art is popping up everywhere!
Located where people work and live, this type of art reflects the history
and values of a community. Monuments & Metaphors spotlights
some of the most endearing and best known public art in Baton Rouge
as well as new projects by The Walls Project, the Museum of Public
Art, and the Percent for Art program of the Louisiana State Division of
the Arts. Preparatory drawings, maquettes, 3-D printer models, and
full-scale photographs reveal how these public works came to be, the
stories they tell, and how they were made.
FROM CLAY TO BRONZE REVISITED
THROUGH JUNE 28 | SOUPÇON GALLERY
Today’s computer-aided 3D modeling and printing techniques are
transforming the traditional practice of bronze casting! Models,
images, and a video demonstrate the lost-wax process step by step as
practiced by Frank Hayden as well as the contemporary approach taken
by local artist Brad Bourgoyne.
25 YEARS OF THE HUBBLE SPACE
TELESCOPE
THROUGH AUGUST 31 | UNIVERSE GALLERY
Since its launch in April 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has
provided stunning images of far-away stars, galaxies, and nebulae,
and has shed light on many of the great mysteries of the universe.
Today, HST continues to provide views of cosmic wonders never before
seen. This exhibit displays some of the most intriguing images taken by
HST over the past 25 years.
THROUGH JUNE 28 | SAT 10 AM, 4 PM | SUN 4 PM
Explore our moon’s observable features, motion, and phases
through this educational yet highly entertaining show that uses
popular animation styles to capture the attention of young
audiences. Visitors will discover why the moon has craters,
mountains, and no atmosphere, as well as why we see the moon
in the daytime sky, why it shines, and why we see only one side of
the moon. A tour of the evening night sky, pointing out seasonal
constellations and visible planets, is also included.
A HITCHHIKER’S TOUR
THROUGH THE UNIVERSE
MAY 3 | 1-4 PM
Weekend family programs are free to members and included in the price of general admission. Viewing & Doing Art, Engineer It, and BASF Kids’ Lab
require adult participation and are offered on a first come, first served basis with registration beginning the morning of each program, and space
is limited. Groups that schedule in advance may receive confirmed reservations and discounted admission rates. Kids’ Lab participants may also
preregister Monday through noon Thursday prior to the program by e-mailing [email protected].
The Art & Science Museum’s popular show Digital Universe
has been updated and expanded with new digital imagery of
some of the most breathtaking galaxies and nebulae, becoming
A Hitchhiker’s Tour through the Universe. Go on a magic
carpet ride through the night sky, from an up-close encounter of
the planets of our solar system, through the stars of our Milky Way
Galaxy, past galaxy clusters, and to the edge of our observable
universe.
Spend some time with your friends or family this first Sunday at the Art & Science
Museum! Free admission to the galleries, reduced admission to planetarium
shows, and a variety of art and science exhibitions and activities make this a fun
and unique day out for all ages.
ENGINEER IT: WATER WORKS
MAY 7 | 5:30-7:30 PM
Outdoor public art is often cast in bronze using the lost-wax process. Brad
Bourgoyne, whose artwork is on view, will discuss this age-old casting method
and the possibilities offered by incorporating 3D computer technology. Enjoy
complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres with admission: members free, students
with ID $5, nonmembers $7.
