This summer, let your little campers explore the amazing world of astronomy
through unique and educational science and art experiences that encourage
discovery and inspire creativity. Children will enjoy private time under the
stars each morning in the Art & Science Museum’s state-of the-art Irene W.
Pennington Planetarium as they identify constellations, planets, and the phases
of the moon while participating in fun, interactive programs. This year’s exciting
interdisciplinary activities include making a comet, building telescopes, using
video microscopes, and exploring nanoscience and engineering. To celebrate the
International Year of Light, campers will create illuminated art and experiment
with prisms, lasers and spectrum analysis.

As part of the International Year
of Light, discover the importance
of light and optical technologies
in our daily lives at the Art & Science Museum’s annual
National Astronomy Day on April 25. In addition to recent
NASA discoveries and careers in astronomy, visitors
can learn about the importance of dark skies and light
pollution—topics particularly relevant to the 2015
International Year of Light.
NEW
IN THE MUSEUM
STORE
Create, invent, and be a part of the Maker
Movement! The Museum Store now carries
Makey Makey kits, Little Bits, and a selection of
books to give you the resources to launch your
imagination to infinity! In most large cities of the world, including Baton Rouge, it
is no longer possible to appreciate the true beauty of the
night sky due to light pollution. Light pollution is a form
of environmental degradation in which excessive artificial
outdoor lightings, such as street lamps, neon signs, and
illuminated sign boards, affect the natural environment
and the ecosystem. The wasteful light emitted directly
upwards or reflected upwards from poorly-designed
artificial light sources can be scattered by clouds, fog, and
pollutants like suspended particulates in the atmosphere.
The night sky is thus brightened, leading to a reduced
number of stars visible in the sky due to a decrease of the
light contrast.

Monuments & Metaphors spotlights some of the most endearing and
best known public art in Baton Rouge as well as new projects by The Walls
Project, the Museum of Public Art, and the Percent for Art program of the
Louisiana State Division of the Arts. Preparatory drawings, maquettes,
3D printer models, and full-scale photographs reveal how these public
works came to be, the stories they tell, and how they were made.
FROM CLAY TO BRONZE REVISITED
THROUGH JUNE 28 | SOUPÇON GALLERY
Discover the traditional lost-wax process of casting bronze as was
practiced by artist Frank Hayden, and how contemporary sculptor Brad
Bourgoyne uses modern technologies such as 3D printing to transform
this process and create a new approach.
The relationship between humans and
animals has always been complex with mutual
dependencies that are practical, psychological,
and even theological. Ancient Egyptian animal
mummies are a particular manifestation of this
complex web of inter-relations. This lecture
presents the different types of animal mummies

Louisiana State University.
(food, pets, votive offerings, sacred creatures,
and ‘other’) and explains how and why they
were made, the theological and aesthetic decisions that went into
their ‘packaging’, what each type meant to the ancient Egyptians,
how they reflect the ways in which the Egyptians interacted with
the animal world, and how even today they influence our view
of the ancient Egyptians and influence contemporary thought
and art.

The universe is a curious place, more so than we ever imagined. As scientists unravel the complexities of the
cosmos, key findings are revealing amazing new frontiers for explorations. Come along on a journey to investigate
what we already know and the mysteries we have yet to solve in Dark Universe, a new space show narrated by
astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson as your guide. This show goes beyond the night sky and into deep space to
find out how discoveries over the past 100 years have led us to two great cosmic mysteries: dark matter and dark
energy. You’ll hurtle through Jupiter’s atmosphere, peer at the web of dark matter holding galaxies together,
and watch the colorful remains of the universe’s beginnings unfold. Experience Dark Universe to celebrate
the pivotal moments that have brought us unprecedented knowledge of the universe and our place in it, and
glimpse the exciting future of cosmic exploration.
