ILL’s Latest Timesaver for You:
“Scan and Deliver” Print &
Microform Materials Electronically
The Interlibrary Loan Unit is piloting a new service called “Scan and
Deliver” for Brooklyn College faculty. This new service offers you the
opportunity to electronically request and receive articles and book
chapters that are in our print and microform collections. This will save
you the time it would normally take to visit the BC Library, retrieve the
item from the shelves, and reproduce it.
This is how it works: Request the item through your BC Interlibrary
Loan account, just as you would normally request an item from ILL. If
you know that it is in our collection, just add a note on the request form.
If you are a first-time ILL user, follow the directions on the website for first-time users at:
https://brooklyn-cuny.illiad.oclc.org/illiad/logon.html or call the Interlibrary Loan Office (x4414).
Instead of cancelling the request (which we would normally do if the material is in our collections), we will scan the
document and send you an electronic link so that you can access it anywhere!
Please note: Depending on initial demand, we may have to limit the number or size of the requests. Also, due to copyright
restrictions, we cannot provide more than one chapter per book or one article per journal issue.

The digitized Brooklyn College Student Handbill Collection is comprised
of 279 BC student handbills created between 1940 and 1989. The
handbills demonstrate student involvement in everything from anti-war
rallies to academic freedom. They are a fascinating glimpse into our
collective history!

Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or
have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others. OER
include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials,
or techniques used to support access to information.
How Can You Use OER in Your Courses?

Reuse, Remix, Revise OER or other authoritative freely available content.

If so, the Library has an easy to use tool to assist you. Shared Shelf is a web-based
multimedia management, storage, and publishing system that allows you to upload
and catalog your collections and share them others in the Brooklyn College community
or publicly on the web through Shared Shelf Commons.
Shared Shelf provides tools to support use of visual content
such as search, browse, zoom, image groups, Mobile
flashcards, and batch download to PowerPoint.
CUNY content can be viewed and shared via ARTstor or
OneSearch–the Library’s latest discovery tool. Assets
published to Shared Shelf Commons can be discovered via any
search engine.
Faculty in all disciplines–humanities, social sciences, the
sciences, visual and performing arts–are using Shared Shelf
to organize, find, and share all types teaching and research
digital content.

CUNY Electronic Resources in the
STEM Disciplines
The City University Office of Library Services in
cooperation with the Advanced Science Research
Center, the Vice Chancellor for Research, and the Chief Academic Officers of the University, has comitted to a
five year agreement for universal access to six STEM resources.
Includes the most comprehensive set of nursing and allied health indexing with full text
Includes almost a third of the world’s current electrical engineering and CIS literature
Includes access to 28 journals from the British scientific publisher
Includes the world’s leading full text scientific, technical, and medical literature

What will this mean for Brooklyn College? We have long subscribed to CINAHL, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and
WileyOnline, we previously subscribed to 5 Nature journals. This agreement gives us 23 additional Nature journals and
we also gain access to the complete electronic library of the IEEE.
All of these resources are befitting a college offering advanced degrees.
We hope this expanded access will add to the prestige of CUNY and to each of its colleges.
Since the publication of the first Annual Review of Biochemistry
in 1932, Annual Reviews has brought to its readers the most
useful and intelligent analysis of the primary research
literature. Annual Reviews volumes are published each year for
46 focused disciplines within the biomedical, life, physical,
and social sciences, including economics. The mission of

economies. Through a generous donation by an anonymous donor, the
Library is fortunate to be able to offer access to Bloomberg Professional
terminals to our faculty and students.
A Bloomberg terminal is available in the Faculty Training and
Development Lab for faculty use. In addition, a laptop with
Bloomberg Professional is available in the Lab to check out for oncampus teaching purposes.

eMarketer will tell you how consumers are spending their

Artemis: Primary Sources unifies extensive digital archives and
enables scholars to make amazing research connections. It’s a
combination of full text content, dependable metadata, and
intuitive subject indexing.
17th and 18th Century Burney Collection, gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney
(1757-1817), includes his 700 bound volumes of newspapers and news pamphlets
published in London with additional English provincial, Irish, and Scottish papers
(and examples from the American colonies, Europe and India).
Eighteenth Century Collections Online includes page images of entire books published
during the 18th Century. With full text searching, the collection allows new ways
to access information in the fields of history, literature, religion, law, fine arts, and

Blackboard
Collaborate is
now available
to help you
create virtual
classrooms,
offices, and meeting spaces that allow you to interact
dynamically with your students and colleagues, from
wherever you and they are.
Blackboard Collaborate is a web conferencing tool
where users can interact as if in a traditional classroom.
It has all the functionality needed for a student-centered
learning environment, such as text chat, two-way audio,
multi-point video, interactive whiteboard, emotions,
hand raising and polls rooms, desktop sharing, breakout
rooms, and session recording. This feature is now part of
the listing tools available in CUNY’s current Blackboard
version.

exciting new approaches to learning while involving each
student on an individual level, affording active learners
the information and personalization they want.
Full functionalities to Blackboard Collaborate are offered
only through a computer’s web-browser connections.
Limited access to session tools are now available on iPad
and iPhone platforms via Blackboard Collaborate Mobile
app or on other mobile devices by using the mobile’s webbrowsers. These two mobile options are free of charge,
and in both cases students can interact with each other by
joining the text chat and two-way audio, when watching
the instructor’s whiteboard, desktop documents or
presentations in the Blackboard Collaborate main room.

Collaborate is a key component to consider for any online
Analog-to-Digital Media Conversion
Do you need to convert your LPs, audio cassettes, or video cassettes into a digital
format for educational purposes? The Faculty Lab has installed new equipment
and software that will allow you to convert your audio cassettes and LPs into
MP3 digital audio files or CD audio discs, and your VHS video cassettes into
MP4 digital video files or DVD video discs.
Please bring your analog media to the Faculty Training and Development Lab
(Library, Room 382); staff will provide assistance in converting your materials.

Did you know that last year the Library and Academic
IT presented more than 300 technology-based workshops
focused on the needs of Faculty, students and staff ?
Faculty workshops covered the features and modules of
Blackboard, Sakai and iTunes U.
Faculty and staff are welcome to participate in our
student workshop series. The workshops in this series
attempt to conform to the busy schedules of our students.
There are workshops for those who can only attend
on weekends, both Saturday and Sunday. There are
afternoon workshops, common hour workshops and
evening workshops. During intersession we conduct a
winter graduate colloquium.
All workshops are hands-on. Workshop topics include
Introduction to the PC, Introduction to the Internet,
basic and intermediate level courses in Microsoft Excel,
PowerPoint and Word. In addition, workshops are
given for both Mac and Windows in Adobe Photoshop,
Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. Recent workshop
additions include basic QuickBooks, and basic and
intermediate SPSS.

Swivl: The Motion Tracking Camera Platform
Would you like to capture your classroom lectures or guest presentations on your camera or mobile device, but you
don’t have a dedicated camera operator on hand to help? Well, it’s not a problem anymore: Swivl may be the solution
for you.
Swivl is a robotic platform that turns your iOS and Android devices into a motion-tracking personal camera, and
enables you to move freely through the classroom while recording your presentation. For more information about
Swivl, please direct your web browser to: http://www.swivl.com/.
Swivl is fast-becoming a “must-have educational tool for a flipped classroom,” and seems to be the perfect tool for
recording classroom interaction, student projects, and classroom observations.
The basic Swivl set has 3 components:
1. The Robot (base/platform) where your mobile device is mounted, sits on a round base that tilts 30 degrees, and
rotates 360 degrees. The Base is portable and cordless, with batteries that last up to 4 hours.
2. The Marker (remote control) includes wireless audio, high quality built-in microphone and a recording button.
3.
Once the remote control is synchronized with the robotic platform, the base follows the Marker as it is moved
around the classroom.
The Swivl Capture app has a user-friendly interface, it allows the instructor to create presentations and store
them in the Swivl library, and facilitates uploading recorded lectures into your iOS Photo Library or the Swivl
Cloud media service. You can find the Swivl Capture app by searching for “Swivl Capture” in the Apple App
Store or Google Play Store.
Swivl Cloud < http://cloud.swivl.com > is also part of the Swivl product line. Swivl Cloud is not required if you’re
only using the Swivl Robot and app, but a Swivl account will be needed to create and show slide presentations and
movies simultaneously.
In response to requests from interested faculty, the Office of Academic Information Technologies (AIT) acquired three
Swivl kits to launch as a pilot project. Each of our Swivl kits includes:
•1 Swivl Robot and Marker
•1 sturdy tripod
•1 Apple iPad
Participants may also choose to use their own mobile device, and AIT will provide training and support on
synchronizing the device with the Swivl Base and Marker (training is required in order to borrow a Swivl kit).

9.1 eliminates much of the “clicking”
involved in managing the course,
mainly through making many of Bb’s
present capabilities more accessible
to users as well as implementing
new functions that together bring
Blackboard closer to an environment
that users accustomed to Web 2.0
take for granted.

that make managing a course in
Blackboard 9.1 easier:
The Control Panel: For instructors,
the Control Panel appears in the
entry page of a course as a menu,
significantly improving navigation
among different tasks and areas.

Office, McAfee VirusScan,
and Maple?
Free work-at-home software licenses for Microsoft Office (for Windows
and Mac OS); Microsoft Windows 8 and 7, McAfee antivirus software
(for Windows and Mac OS); and Maplesoft Maple (for Windows and
Mac OS) are available for you to download and install on your home
computers (desktops and laptops).
Please note that CUNY eMall software is for use at home or offcampus only.
To download software from the CUNY eMall, please direct your web

How Can Faculty Create a
CUNY Portal ID?
Faculty, students, and staff may access CUNY’s Enterprise Edition
of Blackboard via the CUNY Portal. Direct your web browser to:
http://portal.cuny.edu and select Login. If you already have a portal
account, type in your user name and password. If you need to create
a new portal account, select Register and follow the instructions. In
order to verify your identity, you will be prompted to enter your SSN
and date of birth at this secure, encrypted site; this is a one-time-only
registration action.

How Can Faculty
Borrow a Laptop To
Use Off-Campus?
The Office of Information Technology
Services (ITS), Library, and Office of
Academic Information Technologies (AIT)
manage the Faculty Laptop Loan Program,
which is designed for Faculty who are
traveling on college business or have other
off-campus research and computing needs.
Laptops are loaned out on a first-come,
first-served basis to Faculty. Laptops may
be borrowed short-term for a one week
(full-time & adjunct Faculty) or long-term
up to the end of the semester (full-time
Faculty only). We have Windows and Apple
Macintosh laptops available for loan; we
will do our best to provide the requested
platform; however, due to the limited
number of circulating laptops, we may not
have your preferred platform available.

To better assist Faculty with qualitative research and
analysis, the Faculty Training and Development Lab
has installed and configured two distinct qualitative
data analysis applications:
At the beginning of each semester Academic IT
loads software and system updates, and tests each of
the more than 700 public computers in the Library
and Library Café. Academic IT will attempt to
accommodate Faculty requests for new software
installations. To make this process more efficient, we
need your cooperation.
Please submit your requests for new software
installations or version upgrades four weeks before the
start of the new semester. We need this time for clone
preparation, installation, and testing.

At present, both programs are only available on a
dedicated workstation located in the Faculty Training

speak with any member of the Faculty Lab staff for
access to NVivo or Atlas.ti.
Please note that we currently have only single-use,
single-machine licenses for both QR programs; we do
not have licenses for installation or use outside of the
Faculty Lab or off-campus.
Please note that Faculty members are responsible
for obtaining license permissions from the software
publishers. Software will be installed only on the
computers covered by appropriate valid license
agreements.

The Brooklyn College Library Faculty Training and Development Lab
provides all Brooklyn College Faculty (full-time and adjunct) with a
range of free services to meet both individual and group needs.
Faculty can access computer-based resources
and services, free printing, and technical support.
In the Faculty Lab, Brooklyn College Faculty have access to
computer hardware and software, technology support and
advice, drop-in individual consultation with knowledgeable
and friendly staff, and small-group workshop training in the
effective use of digital technologies for teaching and learning.
The Faculty Lab maintains state-of-the-art, dual-core, Intelbased, Windows and Apple Macintosh computers; color flatbed
scanners; a 35mm film scanner; DVD and CD-Recordable
drives; digital video and audio capture; and B&W and color
laser printers. The Faculty Lab provides software for web page
creation; word processing; spreadsheet analysis; statistical
analysis; database file management; graphics creation; digital
video and audio; desktop publishing; desktop presentation; and
multimedia authoring.

Woody Tanger Auditorium Update
Due to major equipment failure, we were forced to shut the Woody Tanger Auditorium’s doors in the early part of 2014.
When we reopened the auditorium had, unfortunately, limited capabilities. Last summer we took the opportunity to do
around the clock repairs and to strategically plan for the future of the WTA. While the sound and lighting are not at 100%,
we are pleased to say that we were able to re-open the WTA and it has been in full use since last fall. The WTA is once
again capable of showing videos, providing Internet streaming, and accommodating PowerPoint presentations.
As for our future goals, we plan to have the WTA upgraded in the very near future. Our plans include acquiring a new
projector with Blu-ray streaming capabilities, more lighting choices, and a new sound system. We hope that these plans
will make your classroom presentations a more dynamic experience.

Color Printing
Color printing to letter- or legal-sized paper is also
available in the Library and Library Café. Please note
that free printing balances are not applicable towards
this premium service.
Poster Printing Service
Brooklyn College clubs, organizations, and individual
students may now have their JPEG image files printed
as a full-color poster. Posters are printed on heavy stock
paper in either 2’x3’ ($24.00) or 3’x4’ ($48.00) sizes.
Please note that free printing balances are not applicable
towards this premium service.
To submit the poster for printing, students must bring
a properly formatted and ready-to-print JPEG image
file on USB flash drive or CD to the New Media Center
Service Desk, located on the 2nd floor of the Library.
Please note that the poster will be processed and
available for pick-up within 2 business days.
The Library Cafe’s friendly, knowledgeable staff is available to assist students with all their computing needs.

Student Laptop and Tablet Loan
The Brooklyn College Library, Academic Information Technologies,
and Information Technology Services are pleased to continue our
successful Laptop Loan Program for Brooklyn College students.
As of the Fall 2012 semester, we have more than doubled the number
of Apple MacBooks available for student borrowing; this service
enhancement is made possible by the generosity of College President
Karen L. Gould. Furthermore, with our gratitude for a very generous
gift from the Class of 1960, 50th Reunion Class Gift Fund, the
Library is pleased to announce that the Student iPad Loan Program is
continuing to be a huge success.
We now have a total of 72 Dell Windows
laptops and netbooks, 23 Apple MacBooks,
and 5 Apple iPads for student use.
Windows laptops and netbooks are available
for 3-day loans to undergraduate students;
graduate students may borrow Windows
laptops and netbooks for up to 30 days.
Apple MacBooks and Apple iPads are available
for 1-day loan only.
The Student Laptop and Tablet Loan service is
free of charge. A valid BC ID and an additional
photo ID are required to borrow a laptop.
Please direct your students to the New Media
Center Service Desk, located on the 2nd Floor
of the Library for detailed information, and to
complete and submit a Laptop or Tablet Loan
Form.
New Media Center (NMC) and Library Lower Level Lab (L4)
The New Media Center (NMC) provides the College community with a variety of services, including a state-of-theart computing facility with Windows and Macintosh computers, access to the video and audio portions of Brooklyn
College’s non-print collections, and viewing/presentation rooms for small and large groups or classes. NMC staff
oversee use and scheduling of the Woody Tanger Auditorium, and manage the Library Lower Level Lab (L4) student
