From our President! Bring on the warm weather so we can get some training in, October has been a windy and cold month, especially here in Geelong . This has not stopped the enthusiasm , boats are being cleaned, the battery charged and the safety equipment checked ready for that first day back on the water. The Calender this year is jammed packed full of fun for all ,with the TWSA free ski schools, the Bridgewater ski School ,the Victorian funded ski school in Boort and all the tournaments ,what a year we have and then Darwin for the Nationals .HUGE. Please remember none of this would be possible without the huge commitment from our committee members. This year once again we are looking for a team manager for Nationals, I know most of you are very capable of doing this job so please put up your hand and lets show those other States how strong we are, Sue Crisp did an amazing job last year and it has been brought to my attention that I as President did not thank Sue for her efforts. So hopefully better late than never, I would like to thank Sue. HUGE NEWS Most of you would now be aware that MasterCraft boats have signed a contract with Tournament Water ski Australia to be the official Nationals tow boat for the next 5 years ,this being the biggest sponsorship deal the TWSA has ever signed. MasterCrafts is showing a real commitment to our sport of water skiing. It was a real pleasure negotiating this deal with Ronnie from MasterCraft, so thank you Ronnie. This sponsorship deal now in place gives the host States the chance to enjoy many of the benefits on offer, with some of those being the supply and delivery of two MasterCraft 6 litre boats to be use for familisation and the tournament, mechanics and staff on site, shirts for the officials, upfront cash to the host State, fuel supplied, 250 bibs in State colours and 42 MasterCraft Trophies. WOW So if you’re in the market for a new boat get behind the company that supports our sport and buy a MASTERCRAFT. MASTERCRAFT THE OFFICIAL AUSTRALIAN NATIONALS AND WORLDS TOW BOAT. Your thoughts and opinions are important to us (good or bad). U21 World Championships What started off to be a trip to Namibia, Africa ended up as a trip to Florida, USA for the teams, officials and judges participating in the 2013 U21 World Championships. Thanks to the hard work of Steve and Dana Garcia along with their neighbours, and with the help of Wayne & Zuze Briant & John Travers, the U21 Worlds was able to be held at the gorgeous Isles of Lake Hancock in Orlando - a gated community set around a beautiful private ski lake - instead of being cancelled after Namibia withdrew their bid to host the titles. These guys were able to pull together a very successful U21 Championships in around 6 weeks, complete with significant corporate sponsorship. Australia was very well represented, not only on the water but also in the Judges tower with Victorians making up 4 out of the 5 officials that attended from Australia. Glenn Sheldon headed the team of officials as Chief Judge, Lauma Cirilus was Chief Calculator, Waldie Priekulis a boat driver and myself a judge. Bruce Cockburn also attended in the capacity of a judge. Because Australia had the most officials of any country we quickly earned ourselves the title of "The Australian Mafia"! We worked with a great team of judges from all over the world and it was great to get to know new people and catch up with people we had worked with at the Junior Worlds in February, as well as Moomba in the past. As Officials we were very spoilt by the organisers, having very comfortable amenities to use when we weren't working and being fed extremely well! The Championships themselves went off without a hitch, the weather being kind to us for the entire championships, allowing for some fantastic results on the water. Joshua Briant, returning from injury and skiing as an independent, came 1st in Trick, followed by Tim Bradstreet who was also returning from injury. Ex Victorian Skier, and still a Victorian at heart, Jacinta Carroll skied up a storm to see her take out the Overall Women's title, and Tim Bradstreet took out the Overall Men's title, despite a terrible terrible jump crash in the final. The entire Australian Team performed well, ending up with a Silver Medal in the Team section & only just being nudged out of 1st place by the USA. We deserve to be very proud of each of our Aussie Team Members, including Archie Davis and Jason Miller, along with Joel Howley who skied as an independent, for their performances on & off the water. I was constantly amazed to find that all competitors were extremely friendly and polite and it's great to see the friendships that are made & continued at these events. Having been around sport for most of my life it I am really impressed by the fantastic manners, modesty, respect & overall attitude that skiers have towards others. You know, its really amazing to be able to travel to the other side of the world to officiate at a World Championships. When you consider Glenn and I have only been judging for around 5 years it just shows what is available in this sport if you want to have a go, not only from a competitive point of view but also from an official point of view. I encourage anyone to have a go a judging, driving, calculating or homologating - or, as happens everywhere else in the world - all of these things. Who knows it could be you acting as an official at a World Championships somewhere in the near future. If someone had of told me before I started judging that I would one day judge at a World Championships I would have laughed at them, but here I am! So what's stopping you? In finishing I would like to congratulate Glenn on his first Worlds as a Chief Judge & also Lauma on cementing her reputation as one of the best calculators in the sport. The U21's were a wonderful experience that I feel very privileged to have been a part of and one which I will remember forever! Leanne Nationals 2014!
