Starter – What is an online community?
An online community is an online community is a virtual community whose members interact with
each other primarily via the Internet. Those who wish to be a part of an online community usually
have to become a member via a specific site.
1. Match the following information exchanges to their correct descriptions.
Web logs
(blogs)
These are sites which allow users to create and exchange
really short text entries. A popular example of this type of
site is Twitter.
Microblogging
sites
These are websites that provide information that visitors
to the site can extend and edit. They allow users to share
information and are useful for research. The best-known
example of a wiki is Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia
that can be updated by contributors.
Wikis
Chatrooms
These are frequently updated online journals with diarylike entries which allow people to express their thoughts
and feelings and give details of their daily activities.
Typically, a blog includes text, photos and sometimes
video.
Online communication within communities is sometimes
referred to as chat. Some of the large interactive
communities where people take part in the same
conversation or type of chat at the same time are known
as chatrooms.

Electronic mail (e-mail)
Messages distributed by electronic means from one computer user to one or
more recipients via a network.

Instant messaging (chat)
To send someone an instant message.

Newsgroup
A forum on the Usenet service for the discussion of a particular topic
Social networking
A dedicated website or other application which enables users to communicate with each
other by posting information, comments, messages, images, etc.


Take part in a conference or conference call.
Blogs
A regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is
written in an informal or conversational style.

Vlogs / Podcast
A blog in which the postings are primarily in video form.
3. From discovering various online communications that are used online, what do you use?
I use Instagram, Facebook, twitter, BBM and WhatsApp.
4. What are the implications of online communication? Think about the positive and negative
aspects.
Positive:
Allows you to chat in real time to other people who also have an im client.
Negative:
You have to have an internet connection to use instant messaging.
5. What are the client and server roles required to support instant messaging?
Organizations requires use of software that supports more than one platform
6. What does VoIP stand for?
Voice over Internet Protocol
7. What does VoIP do?
VoIP technologies enable analog telephone communications to be digitally transferred and routed
over data networks—whether it's a wide area network (WAN), a local area network (LAN) or the
Internet.
8. What are the limitations of VoIP?
Without Internet connection, it’s nothing.
The quality of sound and video can be very poor.
It’s not reliable for 911 services.
It’s not that secure.
9. What are the benefits of VoIP?
Cost savings.
Phone portability.
Rich media service.
Service mobility.
