Responsibilities of Ownership
Dear BMW Owner;
Congratulations on the purchase
of your new BMW motorcycle.
Whether you have just purchased
your first BMW or you are a previous owner, we hope your new BMW
will live up to your expectations in
every way.
The proper care and service of
your new BMW is essential to its
safe, dependable operation, longevity and to the protection of your
investment.
Your BMW is covered by a new
motorcycle limited warranty, noise
emission warranty/tampering provisions and an emissions related
defect warranty. Detailed warranty
information is contained on pages
9-26.
Our Customer Relations and Services Department, now accessible
via a toll free number, is at your
service. The phone number is 1-800831-1117.
We recommend that you place all
the service needs of your BMW in
the hands of your BMW motorcycle
dealer who has made a substantial
2
investment in Service Training,
Special Tools, Diagnostic Equipment and Original BMW Parts.
Certified Technicians perform high
quality repairs in a minimum amount
of time.
BMW personnel work closely with
BMW motorcycle dealers to maintain the highest standards for their
service and parts department.
This booklet is provided by BMW
Motorrad USA to inform you of
applicable motorcycle warranties.
BMW manufactures its motorcycles to high production quality
standards. Your Rider’s Manual for
your BMW motorcycle will provide
information on operating instructions, safety and riding hints, general
specifications, as well as care and
maintenance procedures and
intervals.
The finish of your motorcycle will
be enhanced by regular washing
with approved cleaning products,
avoiding high pressure washing
systems, and touching up any stone
chip damage immediately. Since
paint finishes are susceptible to
fading from environmental influences,
we strongly recommend that your
motorcycle remain covered when
not in use. Your authorized BMW
motorcycle dealer sells a complete
line of care products approved by
BMW Motorrad USA.
Safe operation of the disc brake
system on your motorcycle will be
realized by following BMW’s recommendation to change brake fluid
bi-annually regardless of mileage.
More frequent changes may be dictated by the climatic severity of your
geographic location.
When your motorcycle is not in
regular use, the Rider’s Manual for
your BMW motorcycle gives you
suggested steps in the proper
storage of your motorcycle and
specific instructions regarding
care of your motorcycle battery.
The effort you make to provide
regularly scheduled maintenance, proper care for the finish
and consistent annual servicing
will reward you with years of safe
and reliable enjoyment of your
motorcycle. Always carry your
vehicle documentation when
traveling.

Customer Assistance Notification
During a specified period, (usually
the earlier of 12 months or 12,000
miles, though this period varies by
state), some states require us or
our authorized BMW motorcycle
dealer, to repair in a reasonable
number of attempts, any defect or
condition which substantially impairs the use, value, or safety of a
new vehicle sold, leased, or registered in that state for personal or
family use.
A “reasonable number of attempts” has been defined as (i)
two or more attempts to repair the
same defect (this may vary by
state) or (ii) that the same defect
has caused the vehicle to be out
of service for more than 20 days
(this period may vary by state),
except for delays created by conditions beyond our control.
If we are unable to correct a defect
or condition covered by these
statutes in a reasonable number
of attempts, we are obligated either
to replace the vehicle or reimburse
the owner/lessee in an amount
equal to the purchase price or
lease payments paid by the
owner/lessee, less that amount
directly attributable to use of the
vehicle by the owner/lessee.
You should send written notification directly to BMW of
North America, LLC of the existence of an alleged defect.

Limited Warranty —
BMW Motorcycles 2012 Models
(Valid only in the U.S.A.)
BMW of North America, LLC
(“BMW NA”) warrants to the first
retail purchaser and each subsequent purchaser of 2012 US
specification BMW Motorrad USA
motorcycles, imported by BMW
NA, or sold through the BMW NA
Military Sales Program to be free
of defects in materials or workmanship for a period of three (3) years
or 36,000 miles (whichever occurs
first), commencing with the date the
motorcycle is delivered to its first
retail purchaser, or, if the motorcycle is first placed in service as a
BMW Press motorcycle, BMW Employee Lease motorcycle, BMW
Motorcycle demonstrator, BMW Display motorcycle, BMW Fleet Motorcycle or BMW Motorcycle dealer
demonstrator prior to sale at retail,
on the date the motorcycle is first
placed in such service.
To obtain service under this warranty, the motorcycle must be
brought, upon discovery of the defect, to the workshop of any authorized BMW motorcycle dealer. This
BMW motorcycle dealer will, without charge for parts or labor, either
repair or replace the defective part(s)
using new or authorized remanufac
tured parts. The decision to repair
or replace said part(s) is solely the
prerogative of BMW NA. Parts for
which replacements are made become the property of BMW NA.
BMW NA makes no other express
warranty on this product except the
warranty as to the emission control
system. The duration of any
implied warranty of merchantability, is limited to the duration
of the express warranty herein.
BMW NA hereby excludes incidental and consequential damages, including loss of time, inconvenience, or loss of use of the
vehicle, for any breach of any express or implied warranty, including implied warranty of merchantability that may be applicable to this product. Some states
do not allow limitations on how long
an implied warranty lasts, or the exclusion or limitation of incidental or
consequential damages, so the
above limitations and exclusions
may not apply to you.
This warranty gives you specific legal
rights, and you may also have other
rights, which vary from state to state.
Any legal claim or action arising from
any express or limited warranty contained herein must be brought within
12 months of the date it arises.

The following items are warranted for defects in material and
workmanship only for the first 6
months:
• Halogen, Xenon and LED bulbs
The following items are warranted for defects in material and
workmanship only for the first
12 months:
• Paint and powder coat finishes
• Chrome
The following items are warranted for defects in material and
workmanship only for the first 24
months:
• Battery
This warranty does not apply
to the following:
a) Maintenance Services: This
includes scheduled maintenance,
such as oil changes, wheel balancing; mechanical adjustments or repairs that become necesary
through normal wear and tear
such as throttle body synchronization, poly V-belt adjustments
or steering bearing adjustments;
or periodic maintenance such
as input and Paralever drive shaft
spline lubrications.
b) Service and Wear Items: This includes the replacement of light
bulbs, brake pads, linings and rotor
assemblies, clutch plates, steering
head, wheel and swing arm bear10
ings and ball joints, fuses, control
cables, poly V-belt replacement,
drive chains, belts, sprockets and
pulleys, exhaust pipes and mufflers for discoloration of finish and
rubber items such as hand grips,
heated hand grips, foot rests, foot
shift and control cable shields.
c) Batteries: Batteries that exhibit
signs of neglect and/or overcharging.
d) Tires: Tires and tubes are warranted by their respective manufacturer for d
 efects in materials
and workmanship.
e) Garmin Products: Garmin products, manufactured by Garmin International and marketed by BMW
NA through BMW or for “Motorcycle” dealers are warranted by
their manufacturer, Garmin Inter
national, for defects in material and
workmanship. Please refer to the
warranty information provided with
these products for further details.
f) Improper fuel usage: Only use
fuels advertised to have adequate
detergency and low alcohol (ethanol) content. Please refer to your
owner’s manual for important information on the fuel recommended
for use in your vehicle. Use of
fuels with insufficient detergent
and/or excess alcohol can cause
driveability problems that necessitate cleaning intake valves and
fuel injection valves, and, when
applicable, adjusting the engine
idle. We suggest having this work
performed by your authorized
BMW dealer, perhaps while regular
maintenance is performed. Your
BMW dealer can also recommend
a gasoline additive that will provide
sufficient detergency. While this
recommended unscheduled maintenance is not required in order to
maintain the emission warranty,
cleaning of intake valves or, when
applicable, fuel injection valves, or
adjustment of engine idle, necessitated by use of inappropriate
fuel, it is not covered by warranty
because no defect in material or
workmanship or component failure
is involved.
g) Failure to Service: This includes, but is not limited to, damage
attributable to failure to perform
maintenance services at the specified intervals or in accordance with
the instructions in the Rider’s
Manual. Proof must be provided
either by a paid invoice copy or filling in the appropriate boxes in the
Rider’s Manual.
h) Damage: This includes, but is not
limited to, damage resulting from
negligence, improper treatment,
extreme lack of use or improper storage, the installation and use of side
cars, three wheel conversions,
trailer hitches, the towing of trailers
of any description, accidents or im-
proper accident damage repairs,
corrosion from road salts, battery
acid, cleaning agents, environmental
influences, or treatment contrary to
the Riders Manual.
i) Non-BMW Parts: Damage to a
component or assembly due to the
installation of replacement parts
with specifications that differ in any
material respect from Original
BMW Parts.
j) Towing: Limited towing assistance is available through the BMW
Motorcycle Roadside Assistance
Plan.
The warranty shall be null and
void if:
1.The motorcycle is used in any
competitive events.
2.The motorcycle has been declared a total loss or sold for
salvage purposes.
3.If the Vehicle Identification
Number has been altered or
cannot be read.
4.Any performance accessory or
components attached to the
vehicle alters the original engineering and/or operating specifications which results, or
may result, in damage to other
original components.
11

e xhaust system originally installed on this vehicle meets, at
time of sale to first purchaser,
applicable U.S. EPA noise emission standards under the Federal
Test Procedure.

System Prohibited
Federal Law prohibits the following
acts or the causing thereof:
1.The removal or rendering inoperative by any person other than

California Emission Control
Warranty Statement
Your Warranty Rights and
Obligations
The California Air Resources Board
and BMW of North America, LLC
(BMW NA) are pleased to explain
the emission control system warranty on your 2012 motorcycle. In
California, new motor vehicles must
be designed, built and equipped
to meet the State’s stringent antismog standards. BMW NA must
warrant the emission control system
on your motorcycle for the periods
of time listed below provided there
has been no abuse, neglect or improper maintenance of your motorcycle.
Your emission control system may
include parts such as the fuel-injection system, the ignition system,
and engine computer. Also included
may be hoses, belts, connectors
and other emission-related assemblies.
Where a warrantable condition exists, BMW NA will repair your motor
cycle at no cost to you including
diagnosis, parts and labor.
14
Manufacturer’s Warranty
Coverage:
—For 5 years or 18,700 miles
(30,000 kilometers) whichever
occurs first:
If an emission-related part on
your motorcycle is defective, the
part will be repaired or replaced
by BMW NA. This is your emission control system DEFECTS
WARRANTY.
Owner’s Warranty
Responsibilities:
—As the motorcycle owner, you are
responsible for the performance
of the required maintenance
listed in your Rider’s Manual
and/or in this booklet. BMW NA
recommends that you retain all
receipts covering maintenance
on your motorcycle, but BMW
NA cannot deny warranty solely
for the lack of receipts or for your
failure to ensure the performance
of all scheduled maintenance.
—You are responsible for presenting your motorcycle to an
authorized BMW motorcycle
dealer as soon as a problem
e xists. The warranty repairs
should be completed in a rea-
sonable amount of time, not to
exceed 30 days.
—As the motorcycle owner, you
should also be aware that BMW
NA may deny you warranty coverage if your motorcycle or a
part has failed due to abuse, neglect, improper maintenance or
unapproved modifications.
If you have any questions regarding
your warranty rights and responsibilities, you should contact:
BMW Motorrad USA, Customer
Relations and Service Dept.,
P.O. Box 1227, Westwood, NJ
07675-1227 or call: 1-800831-1117, or the California Air
Resouces Board, 1001 I Street,
Sacremento, CA 95812.
BMW of North America, LLC warrants to the first purchaser and each
subsequent purchaser that this
motorcycle is designed, built, and
equipped so as to conform at the
time of sale with all California Air
Resources Board emission regulations applicable at the time of manufacture and that this motorcycle is
free from defects in materials and
workmanship which cause it to fail
to conform with applicable regulations within the first 5 years or 18,700
miles (30,000 kilometers), whichever
occurs first.
The 5 year/18,700 mile (30,000 kilometers) warranty period shall begin
on the date the motorcycle is delivered to the first retail purchaser or, if
the motorcycle is first placed in service as a BMW Press motorcycle,
BMW Employee Lease motorcycle,
BMW Motorcycle demonstrator,
BMW Display motorcycle, BMW
Fleet Motorcycle or BMW Motorcycle dealer demonstrator prior to
sale at retail, on the date the motorcycle is first placed in such service.
To obtain service under this warranty, the motorcycle must be
brought, upon discovery of the
defect, to the workshop of any
authorized BMW motorcycle
dealer. This BMW motorcycle
dealer operator will, without
charge for parts or labor (including
diagnosis), either repair or replace
the defective part(s) and other
parts affected by the failure of the
warranted part, if any. The decision to repair or replace said
part(s) is solely the prerogative of
BMW of North America. Parts for
which replacements are made
become the property of BMW of
North America.
You are responsible for the performance of all required maintenance.
A failure caused by the lack of required maintenance will not be
15
covered. However, BMW NA will
not deny warranty coverage if the
lack of required maintenance was
not the cause of the failure.
BMW of North America strongly
urges that the motorcycle be maintained and serviced (at the owner’s
expense) as prescribed in the maintenance schedule for the BMW
Emission Control System. The required maintenance intervals for
your model can be found under the
Emission Control Maintenance
Schedule in this booklet.
It is recommended that any replacement parts used for maintenance,
repair or replacement of emission
control systems be Original BMW
Parts or Original Remanufactured
BMW Parts. The owner may elect
to have maintenance, replacement
or repair of the emission control
devices and systems performed
by any motorcycle repair establishment or individual, and may
elect to use parts other than Original BMW Parts or Original Remanuf actured Parts for such
maintenance, replacement or repair without invalidating this warranty; the cost of such service or
parts, however, will not be covered
under the warranty except in
cases of emergency.
16
Use of replacement parts which are
not of equivalent quality may impair
the effectiveness of emission control systems. If other than Original
BMW Parts or Original Remanufactured BMW Parts are used for
maintenance, replacement or repair
of components affecting emission
control, the owner should obtain assurances that such parts are warranted by their manufacturer to be
equivalent to Original BMW parts in
performance and durability. BMW
NA assumes no liability under this
warranty with respect to parts other
than Original BMW Parts and Original Remanufactured BMW Parts.
However, the use of non-BMW replacement parts does not invalidate
the warranty on other components
unless non-BMW parts cause
damage to warranted parts.
In the case of emergency where
an authorized BMW motorcycle
dealer is not available, repairs may
be performed at any available
service establishment or by any
individual using any replacement
part. A part not being available or a
repair not being complete within 30
days constitutes an emergency.
BMW NA will reimburse the owner
for such repair (including diagnosis) not to exceed the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of
all warranted parts replaced and
labor charges based on the manu
facturer’s recommended time allowance for the warranty repair and
the geographically appropriate
hourly labor rate that are covered
under this warranty. Replaced
parts and paid invoices must be
presented at a BMW motorcycle
dealer as a condition of reimbursement for emergency repairs not
performed at a BMW motorcycle
dealer.
BMW recommends that you retain
all receipts and maintenance
records as proof of maintenance
and service or filling in the appropriate boxes in the Rider’s Manual
and/or this booklet. Further, maintenance, replacement, or repair
of the emission control devices
and systems may be performed
by any motorcycle repair establishment or individual using any
equivalent part without invaliddating the warranty.
The following list of components are

according to model.
