Ready, Set, Print!
Wireless printing is now available at the Des Moines Public Library! That means library
users can print from their laptops, tablets, and even phones whenever they visit. Access
to the wireless printing is easy using a link available on the library’s home page. The
cost for printing is twenty-five cents per page and color printing is available. Bring your
portable device and try out this handy new service!
Attention mobile device users! There is an app available called PrinterOn. Printouts can be retrieved
from the same print station that the library public PC customers use. Your email address is your
access key to retrieving your printouts.

Harold Swihart is a graduate of East High School, Grand View University, and
Drake University. He was an English teacher at Des Moines Public Schools for
a total of thirty-eight years. Swihart has also been involved with the Friends
of the East Side Library for many years. Since his retirement eight years ago,
he likes to spend time gardening and reading, especially fiction. He also
volunteers on a weekly basis for Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity,
helping to build and renovate housing for families in need.
Isobel Osius graduated from the University of Wyoming with degrees in
accounting and English literature and holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology
from Temple University. She worked as a custom research director and
marketing database director for Conde Nast Publications in New York City for
more than eighteen years. In 2002, she joined Meredith Corporation, where
she was an editorial researcher until her retirement in 2007. Osius currently
serves as a legislative clerk in the Iowa Senate and enjoys volunteering for
various political campaigns. When the legislature is not in session, she also
volunteers for Legal Aid and loves to read and travel.

Architectural Feature
Restoration Underway
The next time you drive by the Forest Avenue
Library, you may notice some new lighting on
the library’s tower. Once the weather warms
up, it will also be repainted. Conceived as
an icon for the
community,
the tower was
designed by
Roger Spears,
who was then
working with
Baldwin Clause
Architects. The outside is
a steely gray
and the insides
were originally
violet, green,
blue, and red.
In describing
his design,
Spears said,
“the gray panels are like book covers. You
never know what books are really like from the
cover. The magic of books is inside.” The tower was fabricated by Creative Edge in
Fairfield, IA and it is believed to have been part
of the dedication of the new library in 1992.

Letters about Literature
Friday, May 1, 1:00 PM, Central Library
Join in this celebration of great writing
featuring the winners of the 2014 Letters
About Literature reading/ writing contest. This
annual event is sponsored by the Center for
the Book in the Library of Congress and the
Iowa Center for the Book. A guest speaker will
address the audience and eighteen winning
students will read their winning letters and
receive certificates of appreciation.
Added Shelf Life! Library users
are enjoying
the expanded
shelving
recently
installed at
the Franklin
Avenue
Library. The
new shelves allow for greater access and better
display of the library’s large collection. The
Franklin Avenue Library is one of the busiest
branches in the city, and this improvement
makes it easier than ever for more library users
to find the books and media they want. Funding for this project has been provided by
Capital Improvement funds from the Capital
Campaign for the renovation of the Franklin
Avenue Library.
Practice English
with Conversations

learners? It’s easy to do. Just stop by the Forest
Avenue Library on Tuesdays at 12:30 PM or the
North Side Library on Thursdays at 2:00 PM.

Digging Des Moines
Information
Don’t be surprised to see Steve Nelson-Vaux
working away at the microfilm readers the next
time you visit the Central Library. His business
card reads, Library Explorer and Vintage
Prospector, which is an apt title for this retiree. According to Steve, he has always had “a
thing” for books and has always loved to visit
libraries and to be surrounded by information
of all kinds.
A man of varied interests, he began
doing research for Des Moines Parks and
Recreation last year as a volunteer. Asked to
find information about Burke Park for a talk
that a parks department staff member was
giving, he began with the library’s collection
of city directories. Then a librarian suggested
he look at old City Council minutes, where he
discovered that Burke Park had been named
in honor of East High graduate Sgt. John H.
Burke, who died in WWI. Eventually, a plaque
honoring Mr. Burke will be installed. Thanks to
Steve’s research, it is now part of an ongoing
project by Des Moines Parks and Recreation
to install new signage in remembrance of our
past heroes.
Steve says that a favorite part of his research
is sharing interesting stories and other vintage
news that he digs up along the way. You

Become a Super Reader
This Summer!
A Race for Children’s Computers
Watch out whenever the storytime ends on Friday
mornings at the Central Library for toddlers racing to
the Children’s Area! They are headed for the library’s
popular and interactive children’s computers. Youth
librarians Janeé Jackson and Maddie Bassman know
just how popular these computer are. “The kids love
to listen to stories, follow Dora the Explorer, and
play educational games like Sammy Science House”
according to Janeé. The Central Library offers three
Early Literacy Station™ computers, designed for
children ages two to eight.
Your summer can be super at the library this
year! Join in the superhero fun offered as this
year’s summer reading program kicks off on
June 1. Kids and teens can become a super
reader and earn “super” prizes. This year’s
program will also offer GRAND prizes at each
library location.
It’s simple to sign up, just stop in any time
after June 1 or go online at dmpl.org and click
on Summer Reading. Then get set to enjoy
programs featuring music, animals, and some
cape-less heroes, like firefighters, dentists,
police officers, and more. Learn how to make
super bubbles, watch some super bugs, and
make some super crafts. Prizes will be awarded
through July 18. Birth through Twelfth Grade.

Summer Volunteers Still
Needed
Do you know a teen between the ages of twelve
and eighteen? Suggest they become a summer
reading volunteer at the library. Volunteer
application forms can be picked up at the library
and positions will be available until all slots
are filled.
Wondering what teen library volunteers do?
Youth librarian Michelle has her teens at the
South Side Library help cut out storytime crafts
and decorate the storytime room. Librarian
Jen Thomas at the Forest Avenue Library raves
about her volunteer, Arturo. “He helps me with
my programs on Tuesdays. It’s so nice to have a
second person in there assisting with the crafts/
cooking. I also have him make most of my
displays, which he is awesome at! I have told
him that his job as a teen volunteer is to be a
good role model and set the prime example for
other teens in the library. And that’s something
I stress to Summer Reading volunteers because
being a good role model should be their main
job as they sign up our readers.”

Each ELS computer features a touch screen equipped
with seventy educational programs and hundreds of
activities spanning seven curricula. Older children,
ages six to twelve, enjoy the AfterSchool Edge™
computers with fifty top-rated educational software
titles covering subjects such as math, science,
reading, financial literacy, and art.
A preschooler named Asher recently told the librarians that he had learned from the computer “there
are 206 bones” in the human body. Then there is a toddler named Ezra (pictured above) who makes a
beeline to the computer every week where he follows along with the words on the screen listening to
his favorite story by Mercer Mayer. Maddie says, “it’s wonderful the library can offer children so many
educational experiences—all with the goal of creating new readers!”

Hundreds of children and their parents helped
Clifford celebrate his February birthday at the
library. This annual event featuring Clifford, the
Big Red Dog, and his friend Dan Wardell from
IPTV’s Kids Club is always a much anticipated
event—by kids and adults.
The library’s staff enjoys seeing the meeting
rooms packed full of happy children as they
listen to Clifford’s beloved stories. Pictured

Ready for Finals? Try the Homework Hideout!
If you need a place to study, consider the Forest Avenue Library’s Homework
Hideout, available for students in grades four to twelve. It is open Mondays
through Thursdays from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. This quiet space has been outfitted with
Internet access, limited free color printing, and some commonly-needed school
supplies. Community mentors are on hand to encourage and inspire students.

The Des Moines Public Library Foundation will host a
writer’s workshop featuring best-selling author Steve
Berry and his wife, Elizabeth. The workshop will take place
from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM at Plymouth Church on Saturday
April 11, 2015. The cost is $100 per person and includes
breakfast and a copy of Berry’s latest
book, The Patriot Threat. Please register
by April 3 to ensure receiving a copy of
the book on April 11.
The Berrys founded History Matters,
an organization which supports
historic preservation efforts around
the country by raising money through
writer’s workshops. The workshops a re
four hours long and cover everything
an aspiring writer needs to know to get started, or an
experienced writer needs to progress.
Past attendees have said, “Berry’s job is to break art into a
science.” “It was one of the very best writing workshops I
have ever experienced.”
The workshop is a fundraiser for the Library Foundation.
Funds raised will help the Des Moines Public Library
preserve local history.

“At the age of nine I got my first library card. I was allowed to
ride the streetcar down to the old library, select my own books,
and browse in my own world. Later I reversed the journey out to
Ingersoll and 36th. Then I toted my stash a mile on foot to home.
As long as I had the money to ride, I made the trip every week. A
few years later I rode my bike to the branch at 42nd and University.
This was during WWII when independence was awakened.”

A Heartfelt Thank You to the Family of JoAnn Sparks
The North Side Library offered years
of enjoyment to JoAnn Sparks and her
family. After JoAnn’s death on January 9,
2015, her family established a memorial
gift to purchase large-print books for the
North Side Library.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her
husband, Henry. Together they raised
three children, Kate Cloudsparks, Nan
(Sparks) Dunlap and Edward Sparks.
JoAnn volunteered at the North Side Library for 15 years. Nan said her mother wore a vest made of fabric which looked like bookshelves filled with books
on the Thursdays she volunteered. JoAnn loved to clean and organize and used these talents to benefit the North Side Library. JoAnn also liked to do
what she called “search and rescue” – locating books that were not in the proper location. JoAnn spoke highly of the library staff. After JoAnn read all the
large-print books at the North Side Library, a North Side employee, Tina, made sure large-print books from the East Side Library were sent to the North
Side for JoAnn. Another staff member who “went the extra mile” the last two years, was Nanette, a former North Side employee now at the Central Library. Nanette sent books to the North Side she knew JoAnn would enjoy.
JoAnn’s daughter, Nan, said, “Thanks to our parents we were a family of readers. The Library was a part of our lives. We went to the North Side Library
when it was in the little house.” JoAnn Sparks’ family tradition continues. Daughter, Nan, loves the North Side Library, and is proud to say she has been
able to take three of her four grandchildren for story times.

You know the library as a great resource for our community. But did
you know it’s also a great spot for hosting all types of meetings—from
community groups and neighborhood associations to large conferences,
fascinating programs, even banquet dinners, and private events?
Meeting downtown? Surrounded by the Western Gateway Park, the Central
Library may be just the spot, offering fully-equipped meeting rooms at
attractive rates. Large groups will want to consider our Grand Meeting
Room Wing that can comfortably seat up to 300 people in a theater-style
setting. In addition to free Wi-Fi, several other amenities are available
including various microphones, podiums, and a stage. For smaller groups,
there are also two conference rooms available for rent.
Need a neighborhood spot? Consider one of the library’s newly-updated
branches—perfect for community groups and smaller business meetings.
Conveniently located throughout Des Moines, they offer a variety of flexible
spaces that can easily adapt to your needs. Free Wi-Fi and ample parking is
available at all five branch locations.
A non-profit rate is available for clubs and organizations wishing to meet
at one of our locations. Please note that there are small fees for groups
wishing to use our additional resources and services.

Librarian Marci Behm recently assisted a patron looking for information
about window and door casings. He shared with Marci that he had
worked on a construction job for several years and when he first started,
someone asked him who taught him how to do such good work. He said
he wasn’t taught to do it—he just “went to the library and got a book!”
