Hike for Your Health
Junior Naturalist Programs
Saturdays, 9am
March 7th, 14th, 21st & April 4th, 11th, 18th
*Ages 9-12 *Registration Required
During this six week program, you will have
the opportunity to exercise in a serene setting
with a group of people who enjoy being
outdoors. Each week the hiking distance will
increase and different paths will be utilized.
Participants should dress appropriately for
weather conditions.
Woodpecker 101
Saturday, March 21st and June 6th, 2pm
Which species of woodpecker is the smallest
in Illinois? How do you tell the difference
between a male and female Red-bellied
woodpecker? Learn how to identify the
woodpeckers found in our area. The nesting
and feeding behaviors of each bird will also
be discussed. The program will begin with a
presentation in the Visitor Center and end
with a short hike. Don’t forget your
binoculars!
Nature’s LARGEST & Smallest
Friday, June 12th, 9am-11am
Did you know that the smallest frog in Illinois is
only 1-inch long and the largest tree recorded
has a circumference of 34.3ft? Amazing
statistics will be revealed about Illinois’ wildlife
and plants.
Two, Four, Six...EIGHT LEGS
Friday, June 19th, 9am-11am
Spiders are fascinating creatures that have
adapted to live in nearly all types of habitats.
Participants will observe spiders and discover
how their anatomy differs from that of insects.
Feeding behaviors and the life cycle of spiders
will also be discussed. Be ready to search high
and low. The group will keep track of how
many spiders are encountered during a short
hike around the Visitor Center.
Endangered &Threatened Species
Friday, June 26th, 9am-11am
Unfortunately, there are 105 endangered and 47
threatened wildlife species listed in Illinois. The
number for endangered plants more than
doubles that of wildlife. Learn about some of
these species and which ones can be found in
Wabash County.
Woodland Wildflower Hikes
Youth Fishing Derby

Sap used as dye by Native Americans… A
rootstock that tastes like radish… Discover
past uses of our native flora and interesting
characteristics about each wildflower species
during a 1.5 mile hike along the trails of the
Nature Preserve. Feel free to bring along your
camera to capture the intricate design and
delicate nature of these spring beauties.
Plants in Need of Ants
Saturday, May 2nd, 10am
Many flowering plants rely on animals to
aid in the dispersal of their seeds. During
this program, we will be taking a close look
at the beneficial relationship between ants
and certain plants.
Calling all anglers ages 6 to 16! Find your
favorite fishing pole and lucky bait. You
are invited to Beall Woods State Park’s
annual youth fishing derby, sponsored by
The Hanging Rock Bass Club. Please
register upon arrival between 8am-8:30am.
Participants will have two hours to fish.
The first cast can be made at 8:30am.
Prizes will be presented at approximately
10:45am. This event is free of charge and
participants must be accompanied by an
adult.

Pollinators

The park staff invites everyone to participate
in this very special celebration on Memorial
weekend. There will be activities for the
entire family including scheduled speakers,
guided hikes, Montreal canoe rides, a casting
contest, conservation bingo, a treasure hunt,
team games, and mystery guests. Spread the
word and bring your family and friends to this
fun-filled and historic event at Beall Woods.
A schedule of activities and times will be
announced at a later date.
With the array of brilliant colors added to
the green landscape, flowers bring forth a
state of peacefulness and happiness to their
observers. Not only is their aesthetic value
of importance, but many organisms rely on
flowers for survival. Find out how to
attract wildlife to your yard by planting
beautiful native prairie plants. Participants
should meet at the north shelter at 10am.
We will be taking a short hike around the
pollination garden and the prairie
restoration site. Feel free to bring your
camera!
Fireflies

Fishing 9-10:30am
Let’s examine the beetle behind the small
flashing lights that appear and disappear
throughout the dark summer nights. Please
meet at the park’s Visitor Center. Don’t
forget your flashlight! Outdoor activities
will follow the presentation.
Fishing With My Dad is sponsored by the
Wabash County Health Department (All Our
Kids Network) and is for children ages 5 and
under. Children must be accompanied by an
adult. Please remember to bring your fishing
gear with you.
Park Resources:
The IDNR’s Education Section has resource trunks available for loan to
formal and non-formal educators. Each resource trunk is a large plastic
container filled with supple-mental items to enhance your lessons.
