and most established International
centres in Scotland, focusing on English
language teaching. Our English for
Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

As soon as you enrol at Edinburgh College,
you are automatically a member of
Edinburgh College Students’ Association
(ECSA) - named the Further Education
Students’ Union of the Year 2014 by the
National Union of Students.
We have offices at each campus, so we’re
available wherever you study. The team is
made up of four sabbatical officers – students
who have been elected to work full-time
for one year. The sabbatical officers are
supported by a team of three student liaison
officers, and we have one Regional President
who works across the whole College.
We make sure your voice is heard through
your Student Representative Council,
allowing you to put your ideas across to the
College Board of Management. This means
you can make a real difference as a student.

Studying to suit you
Full-Time
Modern Apprenticeships
Full-time study on our further education
courses, which include National
Qualifications such as Highers, National
Certificates and Scottish Vocational
Qualifications (SVQs) and other nonadvanced courses, generally requires you
to attend college approximately 3.5 days
per week for a year.
Full-time study of Higher National
Certificate and Diploma (HNC/D)
courses requires you to attend college
approximately 3 days a week.
Part-Time
Our part-time courses are designed to fit
around your commitments, with duration
and attendance varying between each
course.

Work-based learning
Work-based learning includes day-release
and block-release courses which allow you
to develop your skills and career prospects
while continuing to remain in employment.
Evening and Leisure
A wide range of evening courses including
languages, arts, higher qualifications and
introductory skills in subjects such as
counselling are available.
Training and Development
We offer a wide range of training and
development programmes which are
aligned with industry and Professional
Institute standards.
We have a range of flexible learning
courses which you can study at home or
at one of our campuses. You can start a

Our Student Support Team is here to talk
through any support you may need to get
started and to stay on track. If you have
specific support needs and wish to discuss
how this may affect your plans to study, the
Student Support Team can help.
To ensure you have a smooth transition into
college life, you can meet with a member
of the Student Support Team before you
make your application and again at interview
and enrolment. We can help you become
more confident with skills such as planning
projects, organising your time, reading
efficiently, giving presentations, writing
reports and essays, revision techniques, exam
skills, memory skills and using the library.
We also provide confidential support and
guidance for students who have a specific
learning difficulty such as dyslexia or
dyspraxia, or who have a sensory impairment,
physical disability, health problem, mental
health problem or social or emotional
difficulties.
We are able to assist if you qualify for
the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA),
including discussing supportive technology.

Every full time further education and HNC
level course with us has a dedicated LDT to

progress through tutorials and drop-in
sessions.

Fees and funding
When you’re considering starting college,
it’s important to think about funding and
how you’ll pay for some of the costs that
come with being a student. Funding can vary
depending on the level of your course and
whether you study full or part-time.
You may also be able to claim financial help
towards the cost of registered childcare
throughout your studies.
Some courses may require you to pay for
additional kit costs which are necessary for
your studies. This will be discussed with you
during the enrolment process.

Qualifications Explained
Edinburgh College offers a range of nationally and
internationally recognised courses across a wide
variety of subjects. The course you choose will
depend on your current qualifications, experience
and career aspirations.
The majority of qualifications we offer are from
the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). These
courses are designed to prepare you for further study
or to progress directly to employment.
Many HN Courses allow you to progress directly
from College to Year 1, Year 2 or in some instances
even Year 3 of a University Degree.

full range of Scottish qualifications and how they

MODERN APPRENTICESHIPS (MA)
MAs are a great way to combine work experience,
college practical learning and theory to make sure
you are fully prepared for industry.
Each MA framework is specific to a particular
industry or sector and contains three main elements:
