College Community Access and Continuing Education ACE 2015/16 courses COLLEGE COMMUNITY ACCESS AND CONTINUING EDUCATION ACE College Community courses are designed to make sure you get the most out of your college experience whatever your learning needs. Our ACE college courses help young people make the jump from school to college. Or, if you’re returning to education, our full-time ACE courses include a dedicated Learning Development Tutor to support you every step of the way. All courses provide you with a mix of qualifications and practical experience. Placement opportunities range from nurseries and day care centres, to ScotRail, the Western General Hospital and Holyrood Palace. Some courses include projects such as Bike Maintenance, Duke of Edinburgh Award, John Muir Award, maintaining the college garden or working in the college shop. We also offer a range of courses in the community. More information about these courses is available on request. If you have a suggestion for a new course in your community, get in touch, we would love to hear from you. I am now on a mainstream course but if I hadn’t attended the ACE entry courses I would not have gained confidence or believed in myself to succeed. I have achieved my Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award and also had the opportunity to volunteer overseas. This was a life changing experience for me. CAITLIN HUNTER 01 Edinburgh College AWARDS DUKE OF EDINBURGH // JOHN MUIR DISCOVERY CYCLE MAINTENANCE (COLLEGE AWARD) // EMPLOYABILITY The John Muir Award is a leading nature engagement scheme run by the John Muir Trust to help people from all backgrounds to connect with nature, and enjoy and care for wild places. We are delighted to work in partnership with Edinburgh College in the delivery of the Award and pleased to see that Entry to Learning students have gained so much from these experiences. REBECCA LOGSDON | JOHN MUIR AWARD SCOTLAND EDUCATION MANAGER College Community Access and Continuing Education ACE 02 COLLEGE COMMUNITY ACCESS AND CONTINUING EDUCATION ACE OVERCOMING DIFFICULTIES A student who had experienced a tough time at school through bullying, resulting in poor attendance and low achievement, joined the Edinburgh College Entry to Learning course. Initially he found it hard to be in a learning environment again but gradually acclimatised to the more adult culture and began to gain confidence in the classes and groups he participated in. He also began to make friends with his class mates – some of whom had similar experiences in school. He completed the course successfully and joined the Preparation for Employment course during which he participated in a work experience placement in an IT situation. He was offered an apprenticeship which has since developed into a full-time paid job with prospects, and is enjoying the benefits of his income and status. I was very quiet and withdrawn when I started at Edinburgh College. I now have lots of friends and enjoy learning which was different to my experience at school! I now know that support is available should I need it. CHLOE SELKIRK I started college on the Introduction to College course while still at school. This helped build my confidence to leave school and join the Preparation for Employment level 4 and 5. In this time I gained experience of working in a nursery. I also had the opportunity to volunteer overseas in Turkey for two weeks working with children. I now have paid work in a nursery and attend a mainstream course fulltime. SIMONE FAIRGRIEVE 03 Edinburgh College College Community Access and Continuing Education ACE 04 COLLEGE COMMUNITY ACCESS AND CONTINUING EDUCATION ACE COUNTRYSIDE RANGERS PARTNERSHIP ACE work in partnership with Countryside Rangers to help students achieve The John Muir and The Duke of Edinburgh Awards. “Students from Edinburgh College spent several weeks working on their John Muir Award at Levenhall Links. The Award focuses on getting young people out into the countryside connecting with nature and gaining an appreciation of the great outdoors. They spent time watching and learning about some of the birdlife and other interesting wildlife that frequent Levenhall Links. A great deal of the students time was also spent completing practical conservation tasks.” The practical tasks the students carried out were incredibly beneficial not only to the site but to the students themselves. To see them develop good communication skills, team work and developing a good work ethic that will benefit them in future years in an outdoor environment, was particularly rewarding. I hope to continue working with Edinburgh College and build on and develop what has been a very successful trail year” Nick Aitken Countryside Ranger Levenhall Links 05 Edinburgh College College Community Access and Continuing Education ACE 06 For more information about any of our courses please visit: edinburghcollege.ac.uk/courses COURSES Entry Level Essential Skills Entry Level Towards Independence Preparation for Supported Employment What is this course is about?
