Camping in Shenandoah National Park can be a fun and rewarding experience. Remember that you are sharing this space with plants, animals, and other campers. Consideration is important. CAMPING Big Meadows accepts reservations during peak seasons, and operates on a first-come, first-served basis in early spring and late fall. Reservations can be made up to 5 months in advance by calling the National Park Reservation Service at 1-800-365-CAMP. Check out by 12:00 noon. When sites are available, you may self register by following posted directions at campground office. Camping fees are non-refundable and camping is limited to 14 consecutive days per year. CAMPSITES Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, fire grate, and parking area. Electric and water hookups are not available. Campsites are limited to 6 people and 2 vehicles (including trailer) per site. Vehicles must stay on paved areas. There are walk-in sites for tents. Walk-in tent sites include parking for two vehicles. Respect the area by not trenching your tent or putting nails in trees. Be sure to leave something on your site at all times to show occupancy. CAMPFIRES You may gather dead wood that is down on the ground. Don't cut, saw, or break any standing trees, dead or alive. Fires are allowed only in grates. Never leave fires or hot coals unattended and be sure they are extinguished completely. FOOD STORAGE, WILDLIFE, AND PRESERVATION THIS IS BEAR COUNTRY and deer, raccoons, and skunks are year-round residents. Store your food out of their reach. Put food (including pet food), coolers, and utensils in your vehicle, a food storage bin, or on a food storage pole. It is illegal to feed the animals. Never feed, frighten, or disturb deer or other wildlife. Leave wildflowers, artifacts, and all resources for others to enjoy. All plants, animals, artifacts, and other natural resources are protected by law in national parks. SANITATION Wash dishes at your site, not in restrooms. Wastewater/gray water must be disposed of in the utility sinks in restrooms. Please strain food particles from water and dispose of them in campground trashcans, not in sink drain. Sewage and wastewater from trailers and recreation vehicles must be emptied at the dump station, which is located .25 mile from the campground. Water is a precious and limited resource, especially on top of the mountain; use it wisely. CAMPSTORE, LAUNDRY, & SHOWERS Shenandoah National Park operates the campgrounds. ARAMARK, the official park concessioner, operates the showers, laundry, and campstore. Showers, washers, and dryers take quarters. Wastewater treatment is an expensive undertaking in Shenandoah National Park. Your quarters help return clean water to the park environment. VEHICLES & BICYCLES All roads in the campground are one way and the speed limit is 10 mph. Be sure to keep motorcycles, vehicles, and trailers on paved areas. Remove wide mirrors when trailers are unhitched. Bicycles are permitted on paved roads only. Additional parking is located beyond campsite A104 near the showers. RECREATION Be sure to check the schedule of ranger-conducted activities. Visitor centers have exhibits, maps, publications, and hiking information. They are located at mile 4.6, mile 51, and mile 79.5. Skates, rollerblades, scooters, skateboards, fireworks, and all weapons are prohibited. Generators may be used from 8-10 a.m. and 4-7 p.m. Quiet hours are from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Pets must be on a leash 6 feet or less. Do not leave pets unattended and clean up after them.
