The next CICATS OSH CIG Trends in Occupational Health meeting will be held on
Wednesday, April 22, 2015 from 1:00pm-2:30pm.
Location will be the Outpatient Pavilion, 2nd floor Large Conference Room #S2010.

Upcoming Connecticut Conference
We have exciting news about the upcoming “Shatter the Silence”: Connecticut
conference on workplace assault and violence on April 2, 2015. Jordan Barab, Deputy
Assistant Director of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health will be addressing
the conference on the new OSHA recommendations on workplace assault and
violence.
This conference, sponsored by ConnectiCOSH, the CT AFL-CIO, and the Occupational
Safety and Health Core Interest Group will explore strategies to reduce the
occurrences of workplace assault and violence by discussing how to strengthen
worker protections, a worker's legal rights, and how to establish programs in your
workplace.
For those of you who weren't able to attend the first conference, this will be an
opportunity for you to join with others to address an issue that affects all workers in
every line of work. It will be held at the UA Local 777, 450 Murdock Avenue, Meriden,
CT. This is a free conference and includes lunch.

Please join : Jay R. Poliner, MD, MPH, FACOEM, an occupational physician with a consulting practice based in
West Hartford, CT. He has taught in the New England College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine’s
NRCME training courses since December 2012 in which over 600 licensed healthcare providers throughout New
England have participated. He also participates in the NRCME’s National Registry Champions program to
encourage licensed healthcare providers to become certified MEs.
Co-presenter with Dr. Poliner will be Dr. Pooja Luthra, an Assistant Professor of medicine in the
Division of Endocrinology at UConn Health. She is actively involved in the Endocrine Fellowship
program and teaching and training of medical students, residents and fellows.
She has special interest in managing patient with both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, intensifying
insulin treatment and insulin pump therapy.
Her other interests include Thyroid disorders and bone and metabolic disorders including
osteoporosis.
They will be presenting a seminar on Wednesday, 4/1/2015.
Title of Talk: “Avoiding Disqualification of the Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver with Diabetes: Diet medication, or
insulin exemption”.
Time: 12:00pm – 1:00pm

Our next invited guest speaker for our Colloquium series is: Dr. Jane Lipscomb, PhD, RN, FAAN.
Dr. Jane Lipscomb is Professor, University of Maryland Schools of Nursing and Medicine and
Director of the UMB Center for Community-Based Engagement and Learning (CCBEL). She has
conducted research into the prevention of occupational injuries and illness in the health care and
social service workplace for over twenty years, with a focus on workplace violence prevention. She is
author of the recently published book “Not Part of the Job: “How to Take a Stand Against Violence in the Work Setting”.
Prior to joining the faculty, Dr. Lipscomb spent three years as a senior scientist in the Office of the Director of the National
Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and five years at the University of California, at San Francisco (UCSF)
School of Nursing, as Assistant Professor and Director of the graduate program in Occupational Health Nursing. Dr. Lipscomb
received her BSN from Boston College, her MS in occupational health from Boston University/Harvard School of Public
Health and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Lipscomb is the recipient of the University
Of Maryland’s 2008 Founders Day Research Lecturer Award. In 2013 she was elected as a Fellow of the Collegium
Ramazzini.
She will be presenting a seminar on Thursday, April 23, 2015, 12:00pm-1:00pm;
