FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S PEN
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Another very busy week at Dorie School comes to an end and we find ourselves
quickly approaching the end of the term! Where has the time gone?
Thank you to all parents who came along to our Goal Setting Interviews this week.
We hope you and your child found these to be of benefit as plot the path forward
in their learning. If for some reason you have not had an interview and you would
like to, please contact your child’s teacher to arrange a suitable time.
Our students have been very busy over the past couple of weeks in their
classrooms. It is great to see so much activity and business as I go in to each
classroom. Some highlights of the past two weeks:

Charlotte, Brianna, Chaedis and Billie successfully auditioned for the Mid
Canterbury Schools Music Festival Special Choir. This is quite an honour
for our small school to have four singers make it in out of 120 who tried
out. Congratulations girls, we are proud of you.

Our Rippa Rugby teams have been meeting success on Tuesday nights at
the Showgrounds in Ashburton. I am impressed with the number of
students we have involved in this

Several students took part in the Weetbix Triathlon last weekend and
had a taste of competing amongst a large number of people – well done to
all of you for successfully meeting this challenge.

Yesterday we were treated to two of our senior students, Billie and
Jake, helping “Hoops on Hokonui” co-host his breakfast radio show. This
was a really neat experience for our two DJ’s, and one they will
remember for a long time to come.

I want to thank Richard Wisker from Millwood Plant Nursery in Rakaia for
donating a significant number of plants to our native garden area. Since planting
out the garden 18 months ago there have been some plants, mostly of the same
variety, that have not survived. Richard visited the garden recently to have a look
and was most impressed with what he saw, and decided to replace the dead plants
and donate extras to fill in some of the gaps. A BIG thank you to Richard for his
generosity and to Jake, John-Rey and Alex for helping to plant out the new
shrubs.
With the onset of cooler weather, swimming is now over for the season. If you
have had a school pool key over the summer break please return it to the office.
And now that swimming is finished, we must acknowledge the work done by Teresa
Booker over the summer. Teresa is the person who tests the pool water for
quality, keeps the pool clean and operating as it should. Thank you Teresa for all of
your hard work, it is much appreciated by everyone.
Have a great weekend everyone – “Go the Black Caps and Go the Crusaders”
Anthony
Dorie School extends a warm welcome to
our new student Emily Munro who has come
from Ashburton Intermediate.
OTHER NOTICES
Lost property
The lost property box is overflowing again. Please ask your children to come and collect their clothing.
Newsletter
In an attempt to cut down on the amount of printing we do at school we are looking at e-mailing the newsletter. If you would like your
newsletter e-mailed to you rather than a paper copy please contact Terri at the school office.
Lost Guitar
Sometime over the Christmas break one of our school guitars was borrowed. It has not been returned and it is a valuable donation
which is greatly missed by our music teacher and children. If you have seen it or know of its where abouts please let me know.
Netball
The Year 1&2 program runs on Mondays throughout term 2 starting on Monday 20th April 4-5pm. This will start at the College
courts and transfer to the new stadium once it is up and going. It is a skills-based program with a new skill learned each week
followed by a game of 10 minutes each way for the kids to practice their new skill. There is an emphasis placed on fun and enjoyment.
Games are played on 1/3 of netball courts.
Yr1-2 are required to register directly with Mid Canterbury Netball, there is a fee of $30 for the term's netball. Registration form
is available via the following link http://www.sportsground.co.nz/form.asp?formid=26855&OnCompletionURI=Y1-2%20form
Read-a-thon Reminder
A reminder that read-a-thon starts on the 30th of March. Please return your consent forms/sponsorship forms to the school office
if your child wishes to participate. Hopefully you have all managed to make a start completing the sponsorship form for the read-athon. Just one more week to go and we will be sending out the reading log so that the children can begin reading their books.

2016 George Feilding Hight Scholarship
St Andrew’s College offers a number of scholarships to Year 9 applicants, including the George Fielding Hight Scholarship. This
scholarship is for young men and women from the rural communities of the South Island, whose parents or guardians receive the
major part of their income from the pastoral and horticulture industries and who would be precluded from attending the College
because of financial constraints. This scholarship is means tested and applications must be accompanied by the attached confidential
financial statement. Contact Terri at the office if you would like to know more information.
Mt Hutt Ski Field Season Pass
Forms for the 2015 Mt. Hutt season passes are now available from the office. Once again this year children under 10 years old will
receive free lift access during the 2015 season. The planned opening day is 12 June with extensive improvements including new trails,
a permanent safety fence, expanded snowmaking system, and widening and barriers on the access road. Years 7-8 cost $100 and
years 9-13 cost 165.00. Forms MUST be returned to the school office no later than 1st May.
Whio Awareness Month
March is Whio Awareness Month. DOC and Genesis Energy are running a Whio Forever programme. Part of this programme is to
raise awareness of the diminishing Whio. Your child is encouraged to enter the attached colouring competition. More details are
attached.
Tummy Bugs!!
It is tummy bug time again. The bug, gastroenteritis, causes a sudden onset of vomiting and diarrhoea. Gastroenteritis amy be
caused by a number of different viruses, but most commonly by a virus known as ‘Novovirus’. Whatever the cause of the bug it can
spread easily from person to person. Dorie School has recently adopted the following steps as recommended by the Canterbury
District Health Board

Stay away from school until free from symptoms for 48 hours

Stay at home and ensure good personal hygiene (hand washing and avoid contact with others where possible)

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, esp. after toileting and before eating.

Wash soiled clothing and fabrics on a hot wash cycle

Drink plenty of water and do not handle or prepare food for other people until symptom free for 48 hours.

If a child develops symptoms whilst at school they will be sent to the sick bay and sent home as soon as practicable.
