ENRICHMENT CAMP (Language Arts) Fourth and Fifth Grade Program (Del Valle Education Center) Students have the option of attending any number of sessions; however, students attending multiple sessions will benefit from having skills reinforced and mastered. Each session develops language arts skills and includes literature, writing, and grammar. Through the analysis of short stories, poetry, and vignettes from novels or plays, students will expand and refine their literary skills. Using active questioning, teachers will encourage development of critical thinking skills as well as promote reading for deeper meaning and insight. As they delve into character development, plot prediction, personification, symbolism, foreshadowing, and point of view presented by the authors, they will learn to apply these skills in their own writing. The total writing process will be used to learn how to write an effective paragraph, essay, short story, or “quick write”. Organizational skills, the importance of editing and proofreading all work, the use of rich and expressive vocabulary, proper use of grammar and punctuation will be taught and practiced. Students will experience a variety of learning opportunities—working independently, in partnerships, and in small groups. Practice speeches and debates cement these skills. In the second part of debate camp, seasoned debaters (and beginners who have participated in the first half of debate camp) learn and practice the art of heckling; strategic uses of points of information; and how to appeal to judges. Students will work with others to form threeperson teams that will participate in practice debates that simulate actual debate tournament conditions.
