FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 7, 2015 Contact: Rep. Steineke: 608-266-2418 Majority Leader Jim Steineke Statement on Assembly Rule Changes Madison . . . Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke (R – Kaukauna) released the following statement today in response to passage of updated Assembly rules: “We started the new legislative session with a renewed commitment to maintain productive and balanced debate on the Assembly floor. Last session, Assembly members operated under a Memorandum of Understanding which proved to be very effective. The Memorandum allowed Republican and Democrat leaders to establish a goal of finishing debate at a reasonable time and allowed the Assembly Rules Committee to decide the structure and timing of debate. The intention of these bi-partisan changes was to make floor proceedings more transparent and efficient. These changes we passed today are now codified into Assembly rules.” “Wisconsin has a long history of its political members working together in a bi-partisan manner. These rules continue this proud tradition. I look forward to another session of vigorous and respectful debate that is vital to effective governing and a strong democracy.” -30-
