Building Manager From the East……… We had a great honor to present the Annual Masonic Awards to the well-deserved Downey school district Teachers and Students of the year. Education is such an integral part of Freemasonry that we must commit to build a solid foundation to improve our communities. Are you aware of the Grand Lodge of California program in Raising a Reader? More information on that is available at www.freemason.org May is such an exciting month! Are you ready? We kick off this month by sending the future pillars of our lodge for more leadership training at the Annual Master & Wardens’ Retreat. This is the weekend when our top officers will be able to exchange ideas with the counterparts from other lodges and learn to improve the leadership skills to better our lodge membership. We look forward to their recaps at June 2015 Stated meeting. Our sister lodge, Vegas 32, is visiting us from Nevada this year. This annual tradition has benefited both lodges for decades. We have the privilege to witness the Nevada Ritual performed by Vegas 32 here in California on May 16th, Saturday, before we enjoy the evening of fellowship at the Wehmeyer estate. Please make sure you mark down this weekend for a wonderful opportunity to meet your brothers from our sister lodge. This year’s visit is extremely special for me, personally, as I humbly serve the Sensation of the Nation in the East while holding a dual membership with Vegas 32. I do not know when this will happen again but it is definitely the first time in the history of both Downey United #220 and Vegas #32. For that, I am truly honored. We will continue our tradition to serve as ushers at the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Los Angeles National Cemetery this year to honor our fallen heroes. Feel free to join the Lodge Officers in this effort. If you are available, you are also cordially invited to attend the ground breaking ceremony at the Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena as we get ready for the relocation of the Shriners Hospital for Children Los Angeles. Our Lodge is full of great Shrine Nobles who support the Shriners philanthropy to help children in need. Please thank these Shrine Nobles as they help kids while having fun. I look forward to seeing you at our events. Have a great time and never stop learning! Sincerely & fraternally, Szu-Yu Chang Master 2015 From the West Side of the Lodge……… Please mark May 16th on your calendar as Vegas Lodge 32 visits Downey United. May of each year we get together with Vegas Lodge # 32, the Masons put on a degree while the Ladies go to some fancy lunch and then we all have a nice dinner together with entertainment. Even years we take a bus and visit them in Las Vegas, Odd years such as 2015 they come to Downey. This is one of the really fun events of the year, one that you will not want to miss. The first weekend in May three of us are attending this year’s Masters and Wardens Retreat where we will learn more about proper Lodge leadership and Masonry in general. I wish to thank the members of the Lodge for affording me the opportunity to attend this event again this year. As most of you probably know my grandchildren are members of our youth groups. My grandson Curtis is the current Master Councilor for Downey Chapter DeMolay and my granddaughter Jennifer is currently the Downey DeMolay Sweetheart and granddaughters Erin and Rosy are Princesses. Jennifer is also the Senior Princess; Erin the Junior Princess and Rosy is guide for Bethel 244 Downey Order of Job’s Daughters. As members of these youth groups they have learned many valuable lessons that will assist them thru life. If you know of any girls between 10 and 20 or boys that are between 12 and 21 please talk to them about joining one of our youth groups. One of the benefits of being a Master Mason is the opportunity to join the Shriners and help support the Shriners Hospitals for Children. If you are a Shriner I would like to invite you to join us, The Downey Shrine Club, at our monthly dinners the first Tuesday of every month 6pm at the Sizzler Restaurant on Lakewood Boulevard in Downey. Gary Phillips Senior Warden From the South……….. Hello there! What a great month it has been, filled with various events in our Lodge as well as other blue Lodges, and concordant/appendant bodies. We have met new brothers and made new friends after helping Chino Valley Lodge put on a degree. However, I am glad the month of April has passed and we are entering May. As all of you know, every other year we are visited by our brothers from Las Vegas Lodge # 32 who during their visit put on a degree for us. For those who have never seen a Nevada “style” degree I would definitely suggest to come and see it as it is, not only different from what we do, but also impeccable and just outright beautiful. Another important event that takes place in May is Los Angeles Memorial Day Ceremony. A number of brothers will be participating in the ceremony, helping to direct the procession and paying their respects to the fallen heroes. May also has a great significance for me personally as I was born in May… twice. The first time I was born 35 years ago and then once again 33 years later. I also, have my citizenship interview scheduled in May (something I’ve been looking forward to since the year 2000) and am hoping to be “born” again. In conclusion I would like to share with you a piece from a white paper on Masonry that I read over the past weekend. It was written by an anonymous brother some time ago. “A Freemason is a man who, in searching for life’s ineffable questions, finds his way into the company of fellow seekers. Comprised of men from every nation, races, social and economic level, all hold similar ideals and beliefs. The uniting idea is a faith in the divine founded in the certitude in an afterlife. This “belief” is grounded by certain landmark tenants and virtues which ultimately lead in exploration of those invisible questions, leading ultimately to the betterment of all mankind. Freemasons exist in most every country around the world guided by three principals: Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. The Fraternity is open to all men, with a belief in the divine, a passion towards humanity, and a desire to better themselves. Foremost is the practice of Brotherly Love, not just towards fellow Freemason’s, but towards all mankind for the purpose of unity and cooperation. Within the Lodge, the bonds made through fellowship are vitally important steps towards a better understanding one another. Outside of the Lodge, Brotherly Love leads to a greater degree of understanding and compassion towards all men. Coming to the aid of those in true need, Relief is a second light that serves as a sanctuary for the weary and distressed, whatever the cause to those in need, whether it be poverty, infirmity or whatever their ailment. And Truth, whose search is unending, becomes its own virtue by relating to the nature of man and his transcendental state. Truth does not conform to any specific dogmatic practice of law instead accepting all faiths as sacred. Freemasons nurture and grow the divine spark in humanity through the tenants of Brotherly love, Relief and Truth. Freemasonry strives in its membership to bring likeminded men together to explore the four cardinal virtues in hopes to glimpse the divine transcendence of God. Existing in all lands membership relies on the members own free will and accord, each in his search for illumination through the hands of the divine. A freemason believes in the brotherhood of man and fatherhood of a compassionate deity. Surrounded by likeminded men, masons are dedicated to Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth, believing in their universality of the sacred and divine for the betterment of mankind.” This was very simply put; however, these simple words have such powerful meaning to us, Masons. The Hiram Award is not given for service as Master or for any elected or appointed office or committee. It is a singular distinction, and indicates the esteem, respect and admiration of the lodge members. A California Masonic Lodge may bestow a maximum of one Hiram Award each year which is presented at the request of the individual’s Lodge, and bestowed by the Grand Lodge of California. The District Inspector makes the award presentation on behalf of the Grand Master. From your Secretary… We have a difficult time trying to get all the members to pay the annual dues of our Lodge. Please make sure you have paid your dues by looking at your dues receipt. If you haven’t paid them, send your payment in as soon as possible. It cost the Lodge a substantial amount of time and money to send out notices, make phone calls and then send out a certified letter. You can pay by check or by credit card. To pay by credit card go to http://downeyunited220.org/pay-your-dues/ and follow the directions. Also, we are attempting to save money on our mailings by converting as many members as possible to the emailed version of the Trestleboard. If you do not receive it electronically would please go to http://downeyunited220.org and on the right hand side enter your name and email address, we will send you the Trestleboard early every month.
