It’s Fiesta Time! The annual Fiesta Party will be held at
Mama Roja’s Mexican Kitchen on Lake Hefner again this
year. We will be in the same room overlooking the lake and
what a view… the lake is FULL this year!
There will be an enchilada and taco buffet with all the extras.
The cost will be $10 per person. The price includes your soft
drink or tea and the gratuity. The Club will be subsidizing a
small portion of each person’s meal, so we will be writing
one check for the dinner. Therefore, we are asking that you
please bring cash or a check to the meeting to pay the Club
for your meal.
The buffet won’t be served until 6:00 PM, but you are
welcome to come early and enjoy the chips and salsa and the
fellowship and camaraderie. There will be a cash bar for
those who want to enjoy a margarita or beer. Hope to see all
of you there… come party with us!

September 22nd, Sunday, 6:00 PM, Monthly Meeting, Mama Roja’s Mexican Kitchen, 9219 Lake
Hefner Pkwy, Oklahoma City. An enchilada and taco buffet with all the extras. The cost

SD&D, LD&D, Meet ‘N’ Eat, MWD&D, and Road Trip Schedule
SD&D (Short Drive & Dinner or Lunch) is a short drive that includes a meal and is about 2 to 4 hours in duration.
LD&D (Long Drive & Dinner) is a long drive that leaves and returns on the same day and includes one or more meals.
Meet ‘N’ Eat is meet for a meal in the metro area and then do some socializing and tire kicking in the parking lot afterwards.
MWD&D (Mid-Week Drive & Dinner) is a drive, that includes a meal, scheduled on Monday - Friday, duration will vary.
Road Trip is a drive that includes one or more over-night hotel stays.
September 7th, Saturday, Meet ‘N’ Eat, Northpark Mall south parking lot, 12100 N May Ave,
Oklahoma City at 8:00 AM. Meet to view all the vehicles at Coffee and Cars starting at
8:00 AM. At 10:15 AM we will leave the North parking lot for the drive to Mimi's Cafe. If
you're not interested in looking at the cars you can join us at Mimi's at 10:30 AM for
breakfast. Mimi's is located at 3015 W Memorial Rd. Leaders: Jim & Deb Jones, (405)

September 15th, Sunday, LD&D, meet at the Braum’s, 414 NW 32nd St, Newcastle, at 11:00 AM
for a 11:30 AM departure to the Wichita Mountains, Mt Scott and Medicine Park. 3.5 hour
drive with 1 pit stop. Plan to eat around 3:00 PM at the Old Plantation Restaurant. There
will be a limited menu consisting of Chicken Fried Steak, Fried Catfish, Grilled Pork
Chops, Grilled Chicken, and Burgers. 1 hour return to south side of Oklahoma City.

2014 Club Officers
It’s time to volunteer or nominate Club Officers for 2014. Volunteer or submit your nominations to
Dave Miller or Jim Jones. Article IV of the Club By-laws, dealing with officer nomination and
election, is posted below:
ARTICLE IV
Section 1. Elected Officers of this Club shall be President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, Events
Coordinators, Newsletter Editor, and Governors.
Section 2. The Board of Governors shall consist of six Officers comprised of: the retiring President, the
current President, the Vice President, the Secretary/Treasurer, and two Governors.
Section 3. The Vice President shall act as the Events Director to coordinate the year’s events.

Section 4. Procedures for the annual election of Officers are as follows:
a. A request for nominations for officers and election procedures shall be announced to the
membership in the September Newsletter. Nominations shall be accepted for President, Vice
President, Secretary/Treasurer, six (6) Events Coordinators, Newsletter Editor, and one (1)
Governor (two year term). Nominations shall be delivered to the specified Officer(s) as
instructed.
b. Nominees shall be contacted by Club Officers to ensure their acceptance of nomination.
c. Election ballots shall be delivered to the membership in cases where more than one member
has been nominated to a single position. Completed election ballots shall be delivered to the
specified Officer(s) as instructed. Nominations shall be considered accepted by acclamation on
the first day of November, without balloting or election, in cases where only one or no member
has been nominated to each position to be filled. Events Coordinator positions which are not
filled by election or acclamation may be filled by the incoming Events Director for the year of
his/her responsibility. Other positions which are not filled by election or acclamation may be
filled by the current Board of Governors.
d. Election ballots shall be counted by the Secretary/Treasurer and the President.
e. Installation of new officers shall occur at the Club Christmas Party. Incoming Events
Director may commit the Club for event location/date reservations for the coming year.
“The Vice Sez…”

Another active month for COMC. The month started with 10 cars
traveling to Colorado for the "Romp through the Rockies". At the Romp,
Bobby and Pam Butler won the prize for the "Oldest Miata", Mike and Jenny Fairbanks for the "Sexiest
Miata" and Roger and D'Ann Walk for the "Most Accessorized" Miata. Great work guys.
On the 17th, Joe Rostachil led an amazing 27 cars on an SD&D to Tecumseh for a meal at Zocalo's
Mexican Restaurant. Joe charted a great drive and the food and service at Zocalo's was excellent. This
was one of the largest groups we have had on a drive. Looked pretty neat seeing that many Miatas
together.
On the 21st, we started the day with breakfast at the Around the Corner Restaurant in the historic area
of Edmond. We took back roads to the little town of Ames Oklahoma. With a population of about 200
people, Ames is quite an interesting place. It has an impressive Veteran's Memorial and was the site
where a 1000' Meteor hit the earth about 450 million years ago. With a speed of about 70 thousand
miles per hour it created a crater several thousand feet deep and 8 miles in diameter. It is the largest oil
producing crater in the USA. To date it has produced over 18 million barrels of oil and 18 billion cubic
feet of natural gas. Of more interest to car nuts though, is the Hajek Car Collection and to Miata nuts, it
is the home of the man who named the Miata. After making arrangements to visit the car collection I
started looking at MapQuest and the instructions were telling me that part of the route I selected was
unpaved. This made me more than a little nervous so Deb and I decided to pre-run the route. We drove
the route and found that, although a tad rough at times, it was paved all the way. By the time we got to
Ames we were thirsty so we stopped at the Farmers Co-Op to get a soda and ask for instructions to the
car collection. As is normal in Oklahoma, everyone was friendly and, as usual, Deb had a conversation
going with about half the people in the store within a minute or two. One guy asked what kind of car
club we were bringing. When told the Miata Club he said "you're not going to believe this but Rod
Bymaster, the man who named the Miata, lives here in Ames". He asked when we were coming with
the club and said that Mr. Bymaster might be interested in dropping by to see us. Sure enough, a few
minutes after we arrived, Rod Bymaster came by and visited with us (see pictures). He told us the story
about how the Miata got it's name and graciously signed the trunks of several member's cars. Not only
did the group get to see a fantastic collection of vintage race cars, but also met the man who named the

Miata. There are a lot of stories and conjecture on the internet about the origin of the name but we got
it from the man who was there. By the way, the word "Miata" is the High or Old German word for
"reward".
For anyone who hasn't read it, the Oklahoman has printed an article, published on August 23, 2013,
saying that Gasoline that has not been blended with ethanol could get harder to find in central
Oklahoma due to federal renewable fuel mandates. I quote "It could be harder to find “clear” gasoline
next month in the Oklahoma City area. Or it just could be more expensive. Federal requirements are
forcing refiners to produce growing amounts of fuel blended with ethanol, endangering the supply of
pure gasoline in the central part of the United States, including Oklahoma". Since we are in one of the
few states that even allow pure gasoline to be sold, you are probably witnessing an end to unblended
fuel being available anywhere.
Events already on the September Calendar include the Coffee and Cars/Meet n Eat on the 7th and
Harold and Mona will lead a LD&D on the 15th. Our next monthly meeting will also be our "Fiesta
Party". Keep an eye on the Calendar for more.
New Club Member, Denise Dickenson Logs 200K Miles on a Motorcycle
Only about 20 percent of motorcycle riders log 200,000 miles across multiple bikes. Maybe 2 percent
hit the milestone on one motorcycle. And as a female rider, reaching the 200,000-mile mark is
extremely rare. “I bet there's not 10 or 15 women nationwide that have put 200,000 miles on one
motorcycle,” Dan Maxey, owner of Maxey’s Cycles, said. “She's a one-percenter, an extremist that
rides.”
Maxey held a party at his dealership, 4112 NW 39, to honor Denise
Dickenson, of Oklahoma City, and her Yamaha FZ1. About 50 friends
and fellow riders came to eat hot dogs and cake and congratulate her.
The dealership gave her a new pink riding jacket and a certificate for a
free service.
Dickenson, an IT specialist, bought the motorcycle new from Maxey's
Cycles in 2001. She's ridden it all over the central, southeastern and
southwestern parts of the country. With no spouse or children and a surplus of vacation time, she's free
to ride nearly every weekend and take several longer trips each year.
“When you don't have any kids or pets, you can just take off and go,” said Dickenson.
Trip to Ames Oklahoma Produces a Surprise
Jim and Deb Jones found the former Product Manager/Sports and
Sporty Cars for Mazda Motor of America, Rod Bymaster, in Ames
Oklahoma. Rod’s department was assigned the job to ensure the Miata
project stayed on direction with Mazda’s marketing theme. Rod now
lives in Ames and works for Audi Motorsport. Rod spent time
answering our questions about the Miata (i.e. the name Miata is a high
German word meaning reward) and signed several trunk lids. Rod was
very interested in our Club and may show up at some of our events. On
the next two pages is a copy of the Miata Magazine’s interview with
Rod in their premier, Fall 1989, issue.

of car color and magnet or pin style backs. Cost is around $12.50.
Specify that you are with the “Miata Club”, spell your name as
you want it to appear, tell them the color of your car, and the pins
are generally ready in 4 to 5 business days.

Have the Club logo embroidered on shirts, jackets, blankets, hats, and other
items. You can bring articles you bought elsewhere or buy items in their
store or from catalogs they have available.
The standard logo is approximately 3 inches and will cost around $12.00. If
you wish something larger they can accommodate you. The cost is based on
the number of stitches used. Specify the color of your car to put in the logo.
They can probably match the thread color pretty close if you bring a color
photograph of your car.
Club Pins
With all the Miata events coming up, Club members will need a couple of
extra Club pins to trade with event participants from other Clubs and states.

Magnetic Signs with Club Logo
Magnetic Club logo signs are nice to display on your car when driving to
Miata events. Because the signs are custom made to closely match the
color of your car, they have to be special ordered. Cost of the signs is $20
