HOUSE JOURNAL OF BANGALORE CLUB Established 1868 Issue No. 151 June 2011 For Internal Circulation Only From the President’s Desk Dear Member, May was a month packed with a lot of activities. DJ Rohan set the dance floor on fire at the specially organised Youth DJ Night on the 13th. Mr. Gopalakrishnan, Director of Tata Sons Ltd., delivered the Brigadier Hill Memorial lecture on the 7th. The talk was well attended and the subject “Confronting Reality: India’s adolescent democracy and what to expect in adulthood” set the members thinking. There was a lively question and answer session following the talk. We had the annual quiz contest conducted by sportscaster, Charu Sharma, on the 15th. The quizzing was of a high standard but our members were quite up to it. The knowledge that the younger lot possess is quite awesome! We had a beautiful exhibition of vintage cars, carriages and motor cycles, all from the collection of Dr. Ravi Prakash. Mr. Gopalakrishnan inaugurated the exhibition before his talk. This two day exhibition titled “Personal transportation through the ages” brought back nostalgic memories of their younger days to our senior members. The May Queen Ball on the 21st was a great hit with an attendance of nearly 1,600. Mr. Prasad Bidapa, fashion guru, compered a beautiful show with good member participation. A number of our ladies vied for the May Queen, May Princess & May Empress titles. The fashion show had pretty female and handsome male models walking the ramp, wearing exquisite clothes and jewellery. Forefront, the band from Goa which played at the New Year’s Ball, was in attendance. The violin recital by Padmabhushan Dr. L. Subramanaiam and his son, Ambi on the 8th held the overflowing audience on the lawn spellbound for over two hours. One has to say that they have the gift to create such heavenly music! Forefront also played at the Retro Nite on the 20th and provided lively music for the large number of youngsters who were present. Contd. on page 2 ...From the President’s Desk (Contd) The Sports Night was held on the 28th evening at which prizes and trophies were distributed to the participants of various sports events held over the year. On Sunday, the 29th we had the annual swimming gala. The swimming pool was packed with participants of all ages and a good time was had by all. We also had the Bumper Whist Drive, the Bumper Tambola and the Manorama Baliga Memorial Bridge Tournament during the month. Most of the IPL cricket matches were screened on the main lawns and attracted a large number of viewers. 50 members visited the Toyota car factory on the 25th. They came back highly impressed with the manufacturing techniques used in the factory. An important piece of news is that a long term wage agreement was signed on the 26th with the Club’s labour union. This agreement is valid for a period of 51 months, from January 1, 2011 to March 31, 2015. So it was for one of the most highly regarded American poets of the 19th century, Oliver Wendell Holmes. Holmes first sprang to prominence with the publication of “Old Ironsides”, the ode that led to preservation of the battleship U.S.S. Constitution. He was also a prominent doctor, however. He studied medicine in Paris, received his medical degree from Harvard, taught anatomy and physiology at Dartmouth College, and at age 33 became the first dean of Harvard Medical School. He should not be confused with his son, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., a noted U.S. Supreme Court Justice. Holmes was a popular speaker at Boston events, and known for his series of “Breakfast-Table” sketches, imaginary conversations set in a boardinghouse. The sketches, a showcase for his opinions and humour were published in the Atlantic Monthly magazine and later collected into the book The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table. He published three novels and two biographies. Here are some of his witticisms: “Man’s mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions”; “A person is always startled when he hears himself seriously called an old man for the first time”; “Knowledge and timber shouldn’t be much used till they are seasoned”; and “Some people are so heavenly minded that they are no earthly good”. Like all doctors, Dr.Jessen often finds people asking him questions at parties, on trains and even in the street. And so he has put together a collection of the most common and curious questions that doctors often get asked. In a well-documented book with over 250 curious questions, Dr.Jessen attempts to provide answers in an accurate and matter of fact manner. Though this book does not qualify itself to be a reference book it does well to dispel a few myths and misconceptions about worrying health dilemmas. Almost everyone (while not intentionally being a hypochondriac) does have questions that cannot be asked out loud and Dr.Jessen displays his uncanny ability to address these questions. The book is divided neatly into sections to help you find the answers to your particular mystery. It also provides a few surprising facts and figures which will help readers ace any trivia quiz and also give an understanding about the mysteries of their bodies. “Can I Just Ask?” is a wholly reassuring book which uses medical science as the starting point and injects common sense into its interpretations. “When you hear hoof beats, think horses, not zebras” is the underlying principle of Dr.Jessen’s philosophy and due to its simplicity worth reading.
