The Triduum (The Three Days) Maundy Thursday Good Friday The Great Easter Vigil In the Year of our Lord 2015 Lutheran Church of Hope, ELCA 1305 W. 10th Ave Broomfield, Colorado 80020 (303) 466-4823 – www.lchope.org 2 The Triduum The Triduum (The Three Days) encompasses the time from Maundy Thursday evening through the evening of Easter Day. The services of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Vigil of Easter unfold in a single movement, as the church each year makes the passage with Christ through death into life. In other words, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Great Easter Vigil are one complete service. The Triduum allows a pattern of holding in one theological understanding the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ. They all go together. The Triduum, part of Holy Week, clearly and emphatically draws out and focuses the church’s attention on the crucial core of the Christian gospel. In its focus on the Triduum and Holy Week, the church liturgical year takes its cues from the four biblical gospels. If Jesus’ life on this earth was thirty-three years, then he lived among us for a bit over 1,700 weeks. However, the four biblical gospels devote 25 to 40 percent of their accounts to this one week, the last week of Jesus’ life, which focused on the final teaching, the institution of Holy Communion, his death on the cross, and the resurrection. These days shine their saving message on all the other fifty-one weeks of the year. The message is that there is good news from all the graveyards of life. The Maundy Thursday service includes the words of Jesus’ new commandment (mandatum, from which Maundy comes) to love one another. As a sign of our calling to follow Jesus’ example of humility and service, we may wash one another’s feet as Jesus washed the disciples’ feet. On this night in which Jesus was handed over to death we also gather around the Lord’s Supper. At the conclusion of the liturgy, the altar and chancel furnishings are removed, preparing the worship space for Good Friday. Through this stark ritual we recall that Jesus was abandoned by his followers, stripped of his dignity, and left to face the cross alone. Our eyes have been prepared for Good Friday. There is no dismissal. We depart in silence. GATHERING PRELUDE Please stand as you are able. GATHERING HYMN #347 Go to Dark Gethsemane CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P Friends in Christ, in this Lenten season we have heard our Lord’s call to intensify our struggle against sin, death, and the devil—all that keeps us from loving God and each other. This is the struggle to which we were called at baptism. Within the community of the church, God never wearies of forgiving sin and giving the peace of reconciliation. On this night let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor, and enter the paschal celebration reconciled with God and with one another. P C Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us. we confess to you and to one another, and before the whole company of heaven, that we have sinned by our fault, by our own fault, by our own most grievous fault, in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. A brief silence P C For self-centered living, and for failing to walk with humility and gentleness: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us. 4 P C P C P C P For longing to have what is not ours, and for hearts that are not at rest with ourselves: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us. For misuse of human relationships, and for unwillingness to see the image of God in others: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us. For jealousies that divide families and nations, and for rivalries that create strife and warfare: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us. C For reluctance in sharing the gifts of God, and for carelessness with the fruits of creation: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us. P C For hurtful words that condemn, and for angry deeds that harm: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us. P For idleness in witnessing to Jesus Christ, and for squandering the gifts of love and grace: Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us. C P C In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. Through the Holy Spirit, God cleanses us and gives us the power to proclaim the mighty acts of the one who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Please be seated. If you wish, please come forward and kneel for the laying on of hands. The minister, laying both hands on each person's head, addresses each in turn. P R In obedience to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins. Amen. We who receive God's love in Jesus Christ are called to love one another, to be servants to each other as Jesus became our servant. Our commitment to this loving service is signified in the washing of feet, following the example our Lord gave us on the night before his death. Led by the minister(s), the community washes each other’s feet as they are able. There will be four stations throughout the Nave. After your feet have been washed, you’ll wash the next one’s feet by pouring water over the feet, and gently drying them with the provided towel. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION A As we enter these holy days, together let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God’s creation A brief silence. P C P C P C As we approach the end of our Lenten Season, let us be ever mindful of our individual shortcomings as we ask for your help, oh Lord, to grow where we need to in order to become more Christ-like in our daily lives. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. We ask your help where we have fallen short in the stewardship of the natural resources you have provided for us. Be the guidance we need in order to use the gifts of water, air and fertile land as wisely as possible. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. We ask your help where we have fallen short with the financial gifts you have given to us. Be an inspiration to each of us as we strive to give back to you, through the church generously, in order to carry out all the ministries to which you call us. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. 8 P C P C P C P C P C We ask your help where we have fallen short as good Samaritans to any of our brothers and sisters on earth. Whether they are hungry, naked, without shelter or suffer with sickness or addiction, may we reach out to them as your Son has taught us to do. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. We ask your help where we have fallen short in not loving one another as you love us. Let your Holy Spirit fill us with the wisdom to bring peace to all peoples in all lands. Guide the elected leaders of all nations to rule with justice so that all people can live without the fear of strife or danger. We remember especially the Christians killed in Syria for their belief in you. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. We give thanks for the life-giving food of bread and win that you taught us to share for the remembrance of your last supper with the apostles. We give thanks for the many who have gathered and fed around this altar-table for many years. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. As we reflect on the sacrifice your son made for us in order to have eternal salvation, let us give thanks for all of the saints who have come before us and now live out that promise made possible on that first Easter with the resurrection of our savior, Jesus Christ. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Into your hands, O God of love, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. MEAL PEACE P The peace of Christ be with you always. C And also with you. Please be seated. OFFERING Please stand as you are able. 9 Offertory Hymn #188 Create in Me, A Clean Heart O God OFFERING PRAYER A Let us pray. God of glory, receive these gifts and the offering of our lives. As Jesus was lifted up from the earth, draw us to your heart in the midst of this world, that all creation may be brought from bondage to freedom, from darkness to light, and from death to life; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Hearing God’s Word, we now gather around the table to taste and see God’s grace in the sacramental meal of Holy Communion, given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins! For the festive meal, the presiding minister wears a chasuble, a flowing poncho-like vestment over the alb and stole, symbolizing that the meal is for all people. PREFACE 10 SANCTUS EUCHARISTIC PRAYER III and ACCLAMATIONS P Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new promise in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 11 Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO THE TABLE Please be seated. DISTRIBUTION OF THE HOLY SACRAMENT All are welcome to Holy Communion at Lutheran Church of Hope. If you or your children do not commune in your own tradition, you are invited to come forward to receive a blessing. Communion will be distributed by table; the ushers will direct you forward via the center aisle. When it is time to commune, please go out to the farthest point of the chancel. Each table will be dismissed. Wheat-free and gluten-free wafers are available at the side served by the Pastor. White grape juice is available in the center of each tray. Prayer ministers will be available during Holy Communion on either side of the chancel to the sides of each communion station, for individual prayers of concern, support, and/or thanksgiving. Simply go to them after communing. If they are praying with someone, form a line and wait for your time. 12 AGNUS DEI Please stand as you are able POST-COMMUNION BLESSING P And now the body and blood of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ, strengthen and keep you in God’s grace. C Amen. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION P Let us pray. A brief silence is kept. Lord Jesus, in a wonderful sacrament you strengthen us with the saving power of your suffering, death, and resurrection. May this sacrament of your body and blood so work in us that the fruits of your redemption will show forth in the way we live, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. 13 RITE OF THANKSGIVING FOR THE ALTAR-TABLE (7:30 PM) P Tonight we have been fed around this altar-table for the last time. We give thanks for the people who have been fed and nurtured in the Christian faith around this altar-table. At the dedication of a church building, it is customary to ask God’s blessing on the places of the word and sacrament. Tonight we return to one of those places, this altar-table. Celebrating the blessed sacrament of Holy Eucharist, the Lord’s Supper, is at the heart of a congregation’s life and ministry. It is here where we are nourished and fed Christ’s body and blood, food for the journey, sustaining all those who come with the sacrifice of Christ, once for all. So we give thanks for the ways that God has nurtured this faith community throughout the years and has led us to serve others in Christ’s name. The congregation extends their right hands as the prayer of thanksgiving is offered. P C P C The Lord be with you. And also with you. So let us pray. (A pause) O God, through manna on a wilderness journey and through loaves of bread multiplied on a hillside, you fed people who needed sustenance for their bodies and souls. May all who have been nourished here with the body and blood of Christ give themselves away as food for the hungry. May all who have feasted here welcome others to the banquet of salvation; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Please be seated. A Word about this evening’s Good Friday Liturgy Throughout history, every culture has established sacred places for faith ritualistic experiences. These places, great and small, are havens for the holy to be experienced by all who enter in numerous ways. They are set apart to encourage contemplation, meditation, and worship. They represent a gathering place for worship and a shelter for those in need. In these houses of faith, we encounter a holy hush that transcends the clamor of our daily enterprise. In their cloistered stillness, we sense the divine and learn to listen past our doubts and despair. Inspired, we fill these halls with our voices of adoration and decorate them with our songs of praise. When life brings tears, they are a retreat, a place to rest, where we remember and claim God’s promises of hope and resurrection. **Please note that the closing of the tomb comes with a sudden loud noise.** We gather in silence. MUSICAL PROCLAMATION Music Ministries of LCH Narrated by Mr. Tim Vialpando ‘Sanctuary’ Sanctuary is a service in song that conveys the many ways in which the seeker finds shelter and safety in the cross of Christ. As the cantata shares moments in the Savior’s life, we discover, by His example, the faithfulness of God’s promises to his people – ultimately in the death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ. It is the cross that is ultimately our sanctuary, as there the doors of God’s mercy, love, and forgiveness are flung wide open like the arms of a loving parent. It is in the cross of Christ, we find our fortress of faith, and there, wrapped in His everlasting love, we at last know the deep peace that surpasses our understanding. At the cross our journey is completed and its at the cross, where we are at last home. It is indeed our sanctuary. -JOSEPH M. MARTIN 22 SANCTUARY OF GRACE There is a room, a quiet place, an inner chamber made of grace; A place of peace and child-like faith, a space to dream, to hope, to pray. There is a home, a shelter strong, where ev’ry sigh becomes a song; A fortress sure where all can go, a place to live, to learn, to grow. Come to the home near God’s own heart, where hope begins and healing starts. Come to the cross, the rifted Rock; rest in the loving arms of God, rest in the loving arms of God. There is a room, adorned in light, a shrine of truth, a chapel bright; A place to pray, to seek, to find, a sacred space of love divine. There is a refuge from the cold, a healing haven for the soul. A dwelling filled with gentle grace, a house of worship, made for praise. Come to the home near God’s own heart, where hope begins and healing starts. Come to the cross, the rifted Rock; rest in the loving arms of God, rest in the loving arms of God. There is a tower standing tall, a soaring symbol over all, And those who gather to this place will find redemption, love and grace. Come to the home near God’s own heart, where love begins and healing starts. Come to the cross, the rifted Rock; rest in the loving arms of God, rest in the loving arms of God. Christ, in His arms, will bear you, all who are weary of sin, Oh, all who are weary of sin. All who are weary of sin. 25 SANCTUARY OF THE SOUL Beneath the cross of Jesus, I long to take my stand; The shadow of a mighty rock, within a weary land, A home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way, From the burning of the noontide heat, and the burden of the day. When peace like a river attendeth my way, Be still, my soul, for God is on your side. Bear patiently the cross of grief and pain. When sorrows like sea billows roll. Leave to your God to order and provide. In every change, God faithful will remain. Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, “It is well. It is well with my soul.” Be still, my soul. Your Lord, your loving friend through thorny ways, leads to a joyful end. It is well, Be still, my soul. It is well. Be still, my soul. It is well. Be still, my soul. It is well. Be still, my soul. It is well, it is well with my soul. Be still, my soul. Be still, my soul. IN THE SHADOW OF YOUR WING In the shadow of Your wing, I find my hiding place. Taking shelter in Your love, I rest upon Your perfect grace! In your chapel made of hope, I lift my quiet praise, For in the shadow of Your wing, I will dwell for all my days. In the shadow of Your wing, there is refuge from the rain. Covered in Your gentle peace I learn to live, I live again. In Your chapel made of grace, I bow my heart in prayer, For in the shadow of Your wing, I know your tender care. Other refuge have I none; hangs my helpless soul on Thee. Love, O leave me not alone, still support and comfort me, comfort me. All my trust on Thee is stayed. All my help from Thee I bring. Cover my defenseless head with the shadow of Thy wing. In the shadow of Your wing, I face the silent night. Safely gathered to Your heart, I find in You my promised life. In Your chapel made of joy, I sing unto my Lord. For in the shadow of Your wing, I will live forever more. I will live forever more. 26 DARKENING OF THE NAVE AND SILENT MEDITATION HYMN #353 Were You There This will be sung a cappella REFLECTION ON THE DARKNESS THE EXIT OF THE SANCTUARY LAMP The Sanctuary Lamp burns constantly in the Nave representing the true presence of the Christ in, with, and under the Eucharistic elements of the bread and wine. With no Eucharist during this liturgy, the lamp is thus removed from the space signifying Christ’s death and burial. The Sanctuary lamp’s flame is never extinguished, representing the neverending grace and mercy of God given at the Eucharist. THE CLOSING AND SEALING OF THE TOMB SILENT PRAYER DEPART IN SILENCE Please leave the nave in silence. Silence is to be observed until you are outside the building. All Rights Reserved 29 The Great Easter Vigil, April 4, 2015 5:05pm On the night before Easter Day, Christians around the world gather to celebrate Christ’s passage from death to life. The service includes strong signs: the new fire in darkness, light spreading from the light of Christ, the water and Word of baptism, the first resurrection meal. And powerful words: the great saving stories of Hebrew scriptures and the first Easter gospel. We keep this wondrous night in the spirit of vigil, our lamps lit, awaiting Christ’s coming both now and at the end of time. Alleluia! Christ is risen! And Christ will come again! Living the Easter Vigil death to life we remember and give thanks for the gift of baptism as we splash the waters of God’s grace on two new members of our community of faith. A special thank you to everyone who was involved with this evening’s vigil. A special thanks to Betsy Moody, Sue McKnight, Beth Rogers, Doug Lind, Kim Hohensee, and the Middle and High School Youth of Lutheran Church of Hope for their leadership in tonight’s vigil. All gather in silence in the Columbarium, weather permitting. A small unlit candle may be given to each worshiper. GATHERING GREETING P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you. P Sisters and brothers in Christ, on this most holy night when our Savior Jesus Christ passed from death to life, we gather with the church throughout the world in vigil and prayer. This is the Passover of Jesus Christ. Through light and the word, through water and oil, bread and wine, we proclaim Christ’s death and resurrection, share Christ’s triumph over sin and death, and await Christ’s coming again in glory. The Presiding Minister traces the inscription on the Paschal Candle while saying: P C Jesus Christ, yesterday and today, the beginning and the ending, Alpha and Omega; all time belongs to Christ, and all ages; to Christ be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen The Presiding Minister points to the five nails, representing the five wounds of Christ in the Paschal Candle, while saying: P C By his holy and glorious wounds, may Christ our Lord guard and keep us. Amen 30 The Paschal Candle is lighted. P The light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds. PROCESSION The procession begins, led by the assisting minister bearing the paschal candle. During or after the procession, light from the paschal candle may be passed until the people's candles are all lighted. As the procession begins, the presiding minister sings: The procession continues, stopping at midpoint. The assisting minister lifts the paschal candle and the presiding minister sings on a higher tone: The procession continues. The assisting minister takes the paschal candle to its stand, lifts it high and the presiding minister sings on a still higher tone: The paschal candle is placed in its stand. 31 EASTER PROCLAMATION A Cantor sings the Easter proclamation and invites the assembly to sing the chorus. PRAYER OF THE DAY P Let us pray. A brief silence is kept before the prayer. P C Eternal giver of life and light, this holy night shines with the radiance of the risen Christ. Renew your church with the Spirit given us in baptism, that we may worship you in sincerity and truth and may shine as a light in the world, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Hand-held candles may be extinguished. As we journey together to the Fellowship Hall, later in the liturgy there will be baskets in which to place your extinguished candles. As we await and keep our vigil, we’ll recall three stories of what God has done in the past, as we cling to the promise of the resurrection hope. We’ll act out the stories, we share together and live and breathe God’s word amongst us. The Paschal Fire leads us as we journey through the stories of God’s love, grace, and deliverance. 32 WORD FIRST LESSON The Sacrifice of Isaac Genesis 22:1-18 Come and join us for the improv comedy show to end all shows, featuring Matt Eggen, Anthony Moller and Spencer Cooper. Let the youth of Lutheran Church of Hope tickle your funny bone as we improv our way through the tantalizing tale of Abraham, Isaac and the sacrificial ram! Silent Reflection P C Let us pray. Almighty God, you wonderfully created the dignity of human nature and yet more wonderfully restored it. In your mercy, let us share the divine life of the one who came to share our humanity, Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen. We now journey to the Fellowship Hall. SECOND LESSON The Deliverance of Jonah Jonah1:1-2:1 Care to come by and hear the greatest fish story ever told? One night only, Saturday April 4th, Lutheran Church of Hope will host the movie première of Jonah and the Whale, featuring our friends the Veggie Tales. See Jonah as you have never seen him before and enjoy some popcorn all in the comforts of our newly transformed Vintage Movie Theatre. Silent Reflection P C O God, strength of the powerless and light in all darkness: Look in mercy upon your church, a wonderful and sacred mystery, that it may be an ark of peace in the midst of chaos. Let the whole world come to see that what was fallen is being raised up, that what was old is being made new, and that all things are being restored to wholeness through the one from whom they first took being, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. We now journey to the Nave. 33 THIRD LESSON The Deliverance from the Fiery Furnace Daniel 3:1-29 The night will end with a one-of-a-kind Gospel Musical Sensation featuring the melodious vocals of Marie Glover, Julie Simons, Jen McAnally and Betsy Moody, accompanied by the legendary pianist Sue McKnight. Come and experience the story of Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego and the fiery furnace narrated by none other than Elvis himself (played by John Zack). Silent Reflection P C O God, whose wonderful deeds of old shine forth even to our own day: By the power of your mighty arm you once delivered your chosen people from slavery under Pharaoh, a sign for us of the salvation offered to everyone by the water of baptism. Grant that all the peoples of earth may partake in the salvation of the Israelites and together dance on the safe side of the sea, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. JOURNEY HYMN TO THE FONT –ELW #451 NEW TESTAMENT LESSON We Are Baptized in Christ Jesus Romans 6:3-11 A reading from Romans. 3Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7For whoever has died is freed from sin. 8But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Word of God. Word of Life. C Thanks be to God! 34 THE BLESSED SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM On this holy night, Kaleb Michael Douglas and Trenna Nora are brought to the font to be splashed in the waters of God’s grace. Kaleb is brought to the font by parents Zack Barton and Mary Isaacson and sponsors Eloise Miller, Michael Manson, Karen Fowler, Kenzie Padilla, and Sara Barton. Trenna is brought to the font by parents Greg and Andrea Minnich, big brother Griffin, along with sponsors Marcus Brady and Alicia Margheim. When all have gathered at the font. P In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are reborn children of God and made members of the church, the body of Christ. Living with Christ and in the communion of saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God. The presiding minister addresses the parents of the ones to be baptized. P R P R Zack and Mary, Greg and Andrea, called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have your children baptized into Christ? We do. Zack and Mary, as you bring Kaleb Michael Douglas and Greg and Andrea, as you bring Trenna Nora to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with them among God's faithful people, bring them to the word of God and the holy supper, teach them the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in their hands the holy scriptures, and nurture them in faith and prayer, so that your children may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. Do you promise to help your children grow in the Christian faith and life? We do. The presiding minister addresses sponsors. P R 35 Sponsors, do you promise to nurture Kaleb Michael Douglas and Trenna Nora in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God's Spirit, and to help them live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church? We do. The presiding minister addresses the assembly. P C People of God, do you promise to support Kaleb Michael Douglas and Trenna Nora and pray for them in their new life in Christ? We do. The assembly stands as they are able. The presiding minister addresses the baptismal party. P R I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? I renounce them. P R Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? I renounce them. P R Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? I renounce them. The presiding minister addresses the baptismal party and the assembly. P C Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. P C Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. 36 P C Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. THANKSGIVING AT THE FONT P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P C Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. P Blessed are you, O God, maker and ruler of all things. Your voice thundered over the waters at creation. You water the mountains and send springs into the valleys to refresh and satisfy all living things. Through the waters of the flood you carried those in the ark to safety. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery to freedom. In the wilderness you nourished them with water from the rock, and you brought them across the river Jordan to the promised land. By the baptism of his death and resurrection, your Son Jesus has carried us to safety and freedom. The floods shall not overwhelm us, and the deep shall not swallow us up, for Christ has brought us over to the land of promise. He sends us to make disciples, baptizing in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Pour out your Holy Spirit; wash away sin in this cleansing water; clothe the baptized with Christ; and claim your daughters and sons, no longer slave and free, no longer male and female, but one with all the baptized in Christ Jesus, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Please be seated. 37 BAPTISM P C I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. P Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Laying both hands on the head of each of the newly baptized, the minister prays for each. P C Sustain Kaleb Michael Douglas/Trenna Nora with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen. The presiding minister marks the sign of the cross on the forehead of each of the baptized. P C Kaleb Michael Douglas/Trenna Nora, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Amen. A lighted candle is given to each of the newly baptized. L Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. The introduction to the congregation. P C Let us welcome the newly baptized. We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God's creative and redeeming word to all the world. The presiding minister introduces the newly baptized to the community of faith. A baptismal afghan is presented to the baptized as a gift from the knitting ministry of LCH as a reminder that in baptism we are clothed in Christ. A SPARK Story Bible is presented to the parents as a gift from Lutheran Church of Hope as a tool to begin reading and teaching the stories of the faith. Once the baptismal parties have returned to their seats, please stand as you are able as the liturgy continues with the reading of the Gospel. 38 GOSPEL John 20:1-18 The gospel is announced. P C The holy gospel according to St. John, the 20th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. The Holy Gospel is proclaimed and the Easter Announcement is made! P C Alleluia! Christ is risen! CHRIST IS RISEN INDEED! ALLELUIA! The lights of the church immediately come on as joyful hymns are sung. The new altar-table is processed down the center aisle and the chancel and altar area are decorated with lilies and other Easter decorations. The Easter Proclamation has been made…Christ is Risen! Alleluia! Let us rejoice and be glad! THE EASTER PROCLAMATION HYMNS ELW #377 ELW #619 ELW #383 Alleluia! Jesus is Risen! I know that My Redeemer Lives Christ Is Risen! Shout Hosanna! Please be seated. THE EASTER VIGIL HOMILY Please stand as you are able. THE EASTER VIGIL PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH P Made alive in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God’s creation. A brief silence. P C P C 39 Holy Lord, light a fire in us! May the sparks ignite the hearts and minds of our brothers and sisters with the passion and mystery of Christ’s death and resurrection. Hear us, O God Your mercy is great. Holy Lord, light a fire in us! Shed light to injustice in all corners of the world, both near and far. May your courage bring hope to all who suffer and unite your children together in peace, forgiveness and reconciliation. Hear us, O God Your mercy is great. P C P C P C P C P C Holy Lord, light a fire in us! Bring warmth to the grieved or distressed, lonely or despairing, ill or in pain especially those in our prayers this week and those we name aloud and in our hearts (a brief pause). Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Holy Lord, light a fire in us! Just as spring’s promise brings new growth, Christ’s compassion springs eternal, melting the frozen places in ourselves and letting the spirit take root. Hear us, O God Your mercy is great. Risen Lord, on this most holy of days, we stand awestruck by your greatness. You have shown us how to break free of sin, darkness, death and all that holds us back from God’s eternal glory. Through you, we know that no matter how great our suffering, you will not forsake us. Through you, we know that no sin is too great for your sacrifice and forgiveness to wash us clean. Our souls rejoice and we are renewed by your all-encompassing grace. Hear us, O God, Your mercy is great. Holy Lord, light a fire in us! When we grow weary, quench our thirst with the reminder of our baptismal waters and gratitude for all the saints who have claimed their baptismal promise. Hear us, O God Your mercy is great. Into your hands, O God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our crucified and risen Savior. Amen. 40 MEAL THE EASTER VIGIL PEACE In preparation for coming for Holy Communion, we share the peace with one another. P The peace of the Christ be with you always. C And also with you. Please remain standing. THE DEDICATION OF THE ALTAR-TABLE The new altar-table was constructed from oak by LCH’s own Mr. Harvey Ulmer. It has been given in loving memory of Mr. Tommy Terrill, who claimed his baptismal promise last November. Mr. Ulmer and the Terrill family will gather with the presiding minister at the altar-table for the dedication. P Sisters and brothers: With gratitude for this altar-table, we now dedicate it for the worship of almighty God and for the nourishing of the body of Christ. From this day forward, let this altar-table be a place for the gathering of the people of God to be fed by the blessed sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, strengthening all those who gather around it for the journey of faith and life ahead, bringing life and hope to us and to this community. Let us give thanks for the gift of the Lord’s Supper. We give you thanks, O God, that in Holy Communion you refresh us through the bread of life in Jesus Christ, strengthen us in faith toward you, and nourish us in fervent love for one another. The presiding minister and those gathered at the altar-table lay hands on the table as the congregation extends their right hands as a sign of blessing. The presiding minister traces five crosses on the altartable, customarily inscribed on it, representing the give wounds of Christ. P C 41 Bless all who come to this table of the Lord, and sanctify all who receive the body and blood of Christ at this altar, which tonight we set apart. Give all who taste this holy feast grace to live in faith and love throughout our lives, until at last we all behold you face to face at the heavenly banquet where your saints and angels praise you forever and ever. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. OFFERING Lutheran Church of Hope is about Sharing and Transforming faith, hopes, and lives. So now we come together bringing and offering our financial gifts so that lives both here and beyond our walls may indeed have the hope that Jesus brings to the world! Music Offertory Please stand as you are able. OFFERING PRAYER P Let us pray together. C God of glory, receive these gifts and the offering of our lives. As Jesus was lifted up from the earth, draw us to your heart in the midst of this world, that all creation may be brought from bondage to freedom, from darkness to light, and from death to life; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING We begin our table liturgy by greeting one another in ancient song and offering our thanks to God. For the festive meal, the presiding minister wears a chasuble, a flowing poncho-like vestment over the alb and stole, symbolizing that the meal is for all people. PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy…we praise your name and join their unending hymn. 42 SANCTUS The Holy, Holy or “SANCTUS” is an ancient song that connects our hymn of praise to that of all the saints and angels through all the ages. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER The presiding minister speaks holy words of proclamation about the bread and wine, recalling the Gospel story of Jesus sharing a holy meal with his followers. Jesus Christ is present in, with, and under the bread and wine. P C P C P C 43 Holy God, you alone are holy, you alone are God. The universe declares your praise: beyond the stars; beneath the sea; within each cell; with every breath. We praise you, O God. Generations bless your faithfulness: through the water; by night and day; across the wilderness; out of exile; into the future. We bless you, O God. We give you thanks for your dear Son: at the heart of human life; near to those who suffer; beside the sinner; among the poor; with us now. We thank you, O God. P In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. P Remembering his love for us on the way, at the table, and to the end, we proclaim the mystery of faith: P We pray for the gift of your Spirit: in our gathering; within this meal; among your people; throughout the world. Blessing, praise, and thanks to you, holy God, through Christ Jesus, by your Spirit, in your church, alleluias without end. 44 LORD’S PRAYER We pray together the prayer Our Lord taught to his disciples Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO THE ALTAR-TABLE Please be seated. DISTRIBUTION OF THE HOLY SACRAMENT All are welcome to Holy Communion at Lutheran Church of Hope.
