Dr. Winberg Chai

Born in Shanghai, Winberg Chai earned his PhD from New York University in 1968.
From 1988 to 2010 he was a professor of political science at the University of
Wyoming and was a former director of its international programs. He was formerly
vice president for academic affairs at the University of South Dakota, and he has
taught at the University of Redlands in California and the City University of New
York.
He has written more than 22 books about Chinese culture, politics, U.S. foreign
policy and international development. He was editor of Asian Affairs magazine and
has been an officer in a number of academic societies. Dr. Chai chaired the Third
World Conference Foundation of Chicago and was an official adviser to the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
With Dr. Chai is his daughter, May-lee Chai, an assistant professor of creative
writing at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Father and daughter have
collaborated on two books: The Girl from Purple Mountain, a biography of Dr.
Chai’s mother, which was nominated for a National Book Award in 2001, and China
A to Z: Everything You Need to Know to Understand Chinese Customs and Culture.
