Overview: Dream Catchers at the Cori Sikich Therapeutic Riding Center has been a
501(c)(3) charitable organization since 1993 and provides therapeutic riding and other
equine-assisted activities to children and adults with special needs. Dream Catchers serves
approximately 120 students each week with a team of 18 horses, 12 instructors and more
than 12,000 volunteer hours annually. All instructors are certified by PATH (Professional
Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) International, the international organization that
provides professional standards and certifications. In 2009, Dream Catchers was awarded
Premier status by PATH International. Of the 800 PATH International Centers, only 250
have achieved this prestigious level of certification. We operate 12 months a year and
provide more than 4,000 lessons annually. Dream Catchers has a highly engaged and
influential Board of Directors. We have a strong marketing presence and receive very
favorable press for our programs and our service to the region. We have been featured in
the VA Gazette, the Daily Press, The Health Journal, WY DAILY and Inside Business
numerous times during this past year.
Program: Bridles & Bow Ties is an event attended by 350 guests and is a favorite on the
Williamsburg social calendar each year. For the past several years, it has been a “SOLD
OUT” event. The evening includes: tours of the facilities, student demonstrations, cocktails,
an elegant dinner and a live auction. The purpose is to share Dream Catchers’ mission,
celebrate the successes of our program participants and introduce our staff and volunteers
to the community. It also serves as our major fundraising event of the year.
Annual Budget: Our budget exceeds $700,000, of which we must fundraise two-thirds.
Our students pay only a portion of the real cost of each lesson ($55 of the $170 actual
expense). Almost one-third of our students are riding only because of scholarship funds.
Bridles & Bow Ties is the primary source of scholarship funds for our students for the entire
year. Our generous community partners enable us to continue providing exceptional
services to children and adults with special needs and to fund our programs.
